Galaxy Horizon vanity bases, and the carcass-only listings that make them repairable

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Prices quoted in this article were read off the grid on the review date; the live price grid on this page governs.

Every Galaxy Horizon vanity base on this page is the conventional bathroom box: one drawer across the top, a door or a pair of doors under it, 34 inches tall and 21 deep. What is less conventional is the second listing that sits behind most of them in the loose-parts department, titled "Carcass Only". It is the same cabinet without the parts you look at, sold for roughly two-thirds of the price, and it exists for one reason: so that a damaged box can be replaced while the fronts you already own stay on the wall. On a painted finish that is a convenience. On a stain, where a front from a later production run may not quite match the one beside it, it can decide whether a repair shows.

What a carcass-only listing is, and what nobody has written down

The complete cabinet is sold as, for example, GH VB24-34: the box, the drawer, the doors, the hinges, the runners and the adjustable shelf, finished and assembled. The carcass-only listing for the same width is coded VB24-34-BO and titled "VB24-34 Carcass Only". Read literally, that is the structure: the ½-inch veneered plywood sides, floor and back, and the solid-wood face frame glued to the front of them.

What the listing does not say is where the line falls on everything in between. Does it arrive with the drawer box and its runners fitted, waiting for your old front to be screwed on? Are the hinge plates already mounted in the face frame? Is the shelf in it? None of that is stated on the product, and we would rather tell you so than guess. If you are ordering one, give us the original order number or the full cabinet code and we will confirm exactly what comes in the carton before it is placed.

One thing is certain from the construction itself: the face frame is part of the carcass, and the face frame is finished. So a carcass-only replacement is not invisible. It puts a new frame, from a new finishing run, around your old fronts. On a vanity base that is two stiles and two or three rails, each an inch or two wide. It is far less new wood on show than a whole replacement cabinet, and that difference is the point of these listings.

What the box costs without its fronts, width by width

Six of the seven widths have a carcass-only listing. The 27-inch width is the exception: there is no VB27-34-BO in this finish at the time of writing. Displayed prices, as the store shows them:

The pattern is steady: the carcass is about 64 percent of the complete price at every width except 21 inches, where it is closer to 69. In cash terms the fronts, and whatever else the carcass listing leaves out, are worth somewhere between $130 and $200. That is not a saving anyone should plan a bathroom around. It matters only on the day something goes wrong with the box and nothing has gone wrong with the doors.

The widths stop at 30 inches here as they do in every Galaxy finish; a 33- or 36-inch cupboard beside a bowl is a job for the full-height door version, which also has carcass-only listings at most widths. The complete range is priced on the vanities page, and every carcass-only part lives on the loose parts page.

Why keeping the original fronts matters more on a stain

Dark grey-brown stained shaker vanity with drawer stacks either side of a pair of doors, a white top and brass pulls in a bathroom with a wood floor
A stained vanity in Galaxy Cobblestone, a much darker stain than this one. The grain on each front is its own; a replacement front cut from different stock would carry different figure.

A painted door is opaque. Two painted doors made months apart can differ slightly in sheen or shade, but the wood under them is hidden, so the eye has less to compare. A stained door is the opposite. The ⅜-inch centre panel is, in Fabuwood's own spec wording, "MDF/veneer": a wood veneer over an MDF core, with the stain letting that grain show. The frame around it is solid wood. Every front therefore carries its own figure, and the stain sits a little differently on each piece.

Fabuwood says as much in its spec book. Against its stained finishes it notes that "due to the nature of wood and the complex finishing processes used to generate stained finishes, there may be variations in color which are considered normal." Its warranty goes further and warns that replacement cabinets "may not match display samples and/or existing cabinets." Neither sentence is a defect clause you can argue with; they describe how stain works.

Put those two statements next to a bathroom repair and the logic of the carcass-only listing is plain. Replace the whole vanity base and you introduce a new drawer front and new doors, the largest areas of grain on the cabinet, beside a sink base and a mirror that are not changing. Replace only the carcass and the fronts you have lived with go back on; the new wood is confined to the narrow frame. For a grey-taupe stain whose colour already shifts with the light in the room, keeping the biggest surfaces original is the difference between a repair you notice every morning and one you forget.

Three situations that send people to these listings

  1. Water got into the floor of the box. A vanity base is not usually under the bowl, but it sits beside it, and water from a failed counter seal, an overflowing basin or a leak that ran along the floor can reach it. A ½-inch plywood floor tolerates a splash; days of standing water are another matter. If the fronts are dry and sound, the carcass is the part to replace.
  2. The box was damaged, and the fronts were not. A corner crushed in transit, a side split during fitting, a notch cut in the wrong place for a pipe or an outlet. Talk to us before ordering anything: a transit claim may cover the whole cabinet, and in that case the choice of replacing the whole thing or only the carcass is worth making deliberately.
  3. The layout changed and the box had to. A vanity base moved to the other side of the bowl may need its exposed end finished differently, or a cut-out it never had. Sometimes the cleanest answer is a fresh carcass for the new position and the old fronts transferred to it.

In each case, the person who swaps the fronts over should be the installer or a competent fitter. Doors come off on the Blum hinges by releasing a clip; the drawer front is a matter of a few screws from inside the dovetailed drawer box. Keep the screws together and label which front came from where.

What to keep in a drawer on the day it goes in

The carcass-only route works best for people who can tell us, years later, exactly what they bought. Most cannot, because the paperwork went out with the packaging. Five minutes on installation day avoids that.

  • The order number and a photo of the carton label for every bath cabinet, including the SKU as printed. That is what we need to match a future carcass to the same code and finish.
  • The touch-up kit. It is sold in this finish as a loose part, TOUCH UP KIT, at $62.40, and Fabuwood describes its kit as a stick, a marker and a scraper. The spec book is explicit that spray cans are not made for stained finishes, so a kit like this is the whole repair toolbox for small marks.
  • A spare adjustable shelf, if the household is hard on them. Replacement shelves are sold by width (AS-VB12 at $24.70 up to AS-VB30 at $61.75), and a warped or stained shelf is a cheaper fix than any carcass.
  • Any offcut of toe kick left over after fitting. It is a finished part, and if a mop or a vacuum chips the one under the vanity, a leftover length from the same order is a closer match than a new one.

Choosing the box in the first place

None of this changes what a vanity base is for. One drawer and a cupboard is the right box where one drawer is enough and something bulky needs to live below it: a guest bath, a powder room, a rental. It is the wrong box where two adults need drawers at the same time, and the drawer base page covers that case. The vanity guide sets out the whole family.

What does change on a stain is the order you buy in. The most reliable way to avoid a mismatch later is to buy every visible bath part on the first order, and to accept that a part added a year from now may read slightly differently next to the originals. If a second bathroom is likely, it is worth pricing it now. Anyone buying several bathrooms at once, for a flip or a rental portfolio, should look at the trade program, which gives trade pricing with no tiers and no login.

Common questions

What does "carcass only" mean on a vanity cabinet?
It is the cabinet box without the parts you see: sides, floor, back and the finished face frame, sold under a code ending in -BO, such as VB24-34-BO. It is meant for replacing a damaged box while reusing the original doors and drawer front. Exactly which hardware and inner parts come with it is not stated on the listing, so we confirm that before you order.
How much cheaper is the carcass-only version?
About a third. At 24 inches the complete GH VB24-34 is $484.25 and VB24-34-BO is $312.00, a difference of $172.25. Across the six widths that have one, the carcass sits at 64 to 69 percent of the complete price. There is no carcass-only listing for the 27-inch width.
Will a replacement vanity cabinet match my existing ones?
Not necessarily. Fabuwood says colour variation is normal on stained finishes and that replacement cabinets may not match existing cabinets. That is why replacing only the carcass and keeping your original fronts is often the better repair: the only new wood on show is the narrow face frame.
Can I touch up a stained vanity with spray paint?
No. Fabuwood does not make spray cans for stained finishes. The touch-up kit, sold as a loose part in this finish at $62.40, is a stick, a marker and a scraper, which suits small nicks and scratches on the edge of a door or a drawer front.
What sizes do vanity bases come in?
12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 inches wide, all 34 inches tall and 21 inches deep. Displayed prices run from $364.00 for GH VB12-34 to $555.75 for GH VB30-34. For 33 or 36 inches of cupboard, the full-height door version is the box to use.
Should I buy spare parts when I order my vanity?
If a future repair would bother you, yes: keep the touch-up kit, note every SKU and the order number, and keep any leftover toe kick. On a stain, parts from the same order are the closest match you will ever get.
