The blower is the appliance: buying airflow separately, and the noise nobody puts on the quote

Everything else on the hood pages is joinery. This is the machine. A shell without a blower is a beautifully finished wooden box that does nothing at all, and the choice made on this page decides whether the kitchen smells of last night’s dinner, whether anyone can hold a conversation while it runs, and how much of the hood budget is actually being spent on ventilation rather than on shape. Three units are listed, they are $1,368.25 apart, and the gap between them is wider than the entire width ladder of any shell in the finish.
A separate line on the order, and a very different share of the total

The three listings are GNK RHBB 250 CFM at $419.25, GNK RHBB 400 CFM at $903.50 and GNK RHBB 600 CFM at $1,787.50. All three share the RHBB stem, as do the duct cover and the replacement filter — which is the useful structural fact about this collection. Airflow is bought independently of shape. Choose the shell for the wall and the blower for the cooking, and the two decisions do not have to compromise each other.
What that independence hides is how differently the same blower lands on different orders. On the cheapest shell the fan is a substantial fraction of what you pay. On the most decorative one it is a rounding error — which is exactly the situation in which people under-buy it, because the number looks small beside the shell and the shell has already used up the budget.

Read the bottom row as a warning rather than as a saving. On a designer shell the step from the smallest fan to the largest is under thirty per cent of the total, and it is the only part of that total that does anything. If a budget has to be cut somewhere on a hood, cut it from the shape.
Sizing it: the one rule this page adds to the arithmetic
The arithmetic itself lives on the parent hood page — roughly 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU for a gas range, roughly 10 CFM per linear inch for electric and induction, and both subordinate to what the range manufacturer and your local code say. It is not repeated here.
What this page adds is the rule for reading the result: size the blower for the worst thing you cook, not for the average. A household that mostly boils pasta and roasts chicken and then sears a steak once a fortnight needs the fan that handles the steak, because that fortnightly evening is the only one where the hood is tested and the only one where failure is remembered. Averaging your cooking is how people end up at 250 CFM in a kitchen that fries.
The rule has one hard ceiling. A blower cannot move more air than the house can replace, and past a threshold that is commonly around 400 CFM many jurisdictions require a dedicated make-up air system — a separate mechanical installation with its own cost, covered on the parent page. So the honest process is: work out what the cooking wants, then find out what the house and the code will allow, and take the lower of the two. Ask an inspector or an HVAC contractor before ordering the 600, not after.
One more constraint people skip: the duct. A 600 CFM fan on a long run of flexible pipe with three tight elbows is not a 600 CFM installation, and the money is wasted upstream of the problem. If the route is compromised and cannot be improved, spend the difference on fixing the route rather than on a bigger fan.
Sones: the number that decides whether the hood ever gets switched on
Here is the failure nobody costs in. A hood that is unpleasant to stand under does not get used — it gets switched on for two minutes when something smokes and switched off again, which means the kitchen is effectively unventilated while somebody cooks a forty-minute dinner. Noise is not a comfort issue at the margins. It is the thing that determines whether the appliance you bought is running.
Loudness is measured in sones, and a sone is roughly linear to perceived loudness, so four sones sounds about twice as loud as two. The figures that matter are published per speed, not as a single number, and the useful one is the rating at the speed you will actually use day to day — not the whisper-quiet figure at speed one that appears in the marketing, and not the maximum. Our listings do not publish sone figures for these units, so this is a spec-sheet question to ask before ordering rather than something to infer from the CFM.
Three things reduce noise and only one of them is the blower. First, and counter-intuitively, a larger blower run at a lower speed is usually quieter than a smaller one run flat out — a fan working within itself is a quieter fan, which is a genuine argument for buying up rather than down where make-up air allows. Second, the duct: undersized pipe, corrugated flexible duct and sharp elbows all generate noise as well as costing airflow, and a rigid, correctly sized, gently turned run is measurably quieter at the same CFM. Third, the install itself — a shell that is not solidly fixed will transmit vibration into the wall and buzz.
The practical version: ask for the sone rating at each speed, ask what the blower needs for duct diameter, and do not let anybody reduce that diameter to make a run easier. A hood is a machine you live directly underneath for years, and this is the specification people most regret not asking about.
What “internal” means, and the trade it makes on your behalf
The word in the product name is doing real work. An internal blower is a fan that lives inside the hood canopy itself, directly above the burners and directly above whoever is standing at them. That is one of three places a blower can go in a ventilation system: inside the hood, inline part-way along the duct run, or remote — mounted outside at the far end of the run, usually on the roof or an exterior wall.
The trade is noise against simplicity. An internal unit is one part, one install, one electrical connection and one thing to service, which is why it is what almost every domestic hood uses and why it is what is listed here. Its drawback is that the motor is the closest part of the system to your ears. Move the same fan twenty feet down the duct and the kitchen gets appreciably quieter at the same airflow, at the cost of a second location to run power to, a mounting that has to be weatherproof if it is outside, and a considerably more involved installation.
Nothing on this collection is an inline or remote unit, so if a very quiet kitchen is the priority above everything else, that is a conversation to have with an HVAC contractor rather than a line to add to this order. For everyone else the internal unit is the right product, and the noise is managed the way the section above describes — buy enough fan that it is not working flat out, and do not let the duct undo it.
Why this is the biggest single decision on the hood order
Set the numbers side by side. The entire width ladder of the plain shell — 36″ to 48″, the whole range — is $178.75. The spread between the smallest and largest blower is $1,368.25. Choosing airflow moves the hood budget nearly eight times as much as choosing size does on that family, and it is the only choice on the order that changes how the kitchen performs.
Which is why the order of decisions we would actually use runs: canopy width first, because it is nearly free on the plain shell and it is capture; duct route second, because it caps everything downstream of it; blower third, sized as above; shape fourth, with whatever is left. That is close to the inverse of how hoods are usually shopped, and it is the reason so many finished kitchens have a beautiful hood that nobody turns on.
A last note on compatibility.
