Almost every "this hood has lost its power" call we take is a filter. Not the blower, not the duct, not the installation — a grease filter that has been in place for three years and is now a solid panel rather than a porous one. It is the cheapest part on the whole hood order at $71.50, it is the only part you are expected to service, and it is the one that quietly decides whether the machine you bought is still the machine you are running.
Why a blocked filter is worse than no filter

A grease filter works by making the air take a path that particles cannot — the air turns and the oil does not, so it lands on metal instead of in the duct. That means a filter is an intentional restriction, and the fan has been sized to work against it. When the filter fills up, the restriction rises past what the fan was designed for, and three things happen together: airflow at the burners drops, the motor works harder, and the whole assembly gets noticeably louder. Which is why a neglected hood sounds like it is trying very hard and is in fact doing very little.
There is a second consequence people care about more once it is explained. Grease that the filter no longer catches goes into the duct, where it coats the inside of the pipe along its whole length. Baffle, mesh and charcoal: three different parts doing two different jobs

How often, by how you actually cook
There is no universal interval, because the variable is not time — it is how much aerosolised oil has passed through. A household that fries three times a week loads a filter faster than one that fries three times a year, and no schedule printed in a manual knows which you are.
- Frying, searing or wok cooking several times a week: metal filters every two to four weeks. This is the regime that also wants a spare set, so the hood is never running with a filter in the sink.

The light test beats every interval above. Hold the filter up to a window or a lamp; if the light is not coming through the channels, it is due regardless of what the calendar says.
The recirculating rule: carbon is a consumable, not a component
If ducting to the outside is genuinely impossible, the hood recirculates — it pulls air through a grease filter, then through a carbon cassette, then pushes it back into the room. A carbon filter works by adsorption: odour molecules bind to an enormous internal surface area until that surface is occupied, at which point the filter is full and stays full. It cannot be washed — water does not release what is bound, it simply wets and degrades the bed — and it cannot be baked or vacuumed back to life either, whatever the internet says. It is replaced, and the replacement interval is the single recurring cost of choosing not to duct.
Practically: budget for two or three cassettes a year in a household that cooks with oil, put the changes on a calendar rather than waiting to notice, and be aware that the symptom of a spent carbon filter is that the kitchen smells of dinner an hour later — which people blame on the fan, not on the part. In a ducted install none of this applies; there is no carbon filter, and the only consumable is the metal grease filter above.
How to clean a metal filter without ruining it
The method is unglamorous and takes about ten minutes of attention spread over an hour. Fill a sink with water as hot as the tap gives, add dish soap and a generous spoon of baking soda, and let the filters soak for twenty to thirty minutes before touching them — the soak does the work and scrubbing a soaked filter takes seconds. Use a soft brush on the channels, rinse thoroughly, and then, the step everyone skips, dry them completely before they go back in. A damp filter refitted into a canopy is how a metal frame starts corroding.
What not to do: no wire wool or abrasive pads, which scratch the finish and leave the surface more prone to holding grease; no oven cleaner or caustic degreaser on aluminium, which will discolour it permanently; no bending a mesh filter back into shape, because the mesh does its job through its geometry. If yours are dishwasher-safe, a hot cycle on their own works well — but confirm that with the manufacturer first, because some aluminium filters dull badly in a dishwasher.
While the filters are out, wipe the inside of the canopy and the underside of the hood with the same warm soapy water.
