The step from 33 to 36 inches is six dollars fifty. Three extra inches of cabinet, three extra inches of usable counter and a materially easier job for whoever sets the bowl, for the price of a coffee. If your wall can take 36 and you were going to order 33 to save money, you were going to save $6.50.

The comparison worth drawing is with the storage box next door. From 24 inches upward the sink base and the full-height door box of the same width are priced identically — $438.75, $451.75, $461.50, $484.25, $490.75 at 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36. Same carcass, same doors, same money; one is shaped around a trap and one is not. You are buying the box, not its interior geometry, and that is why width behaves so strangely in this family compared with the drawer stack where every inch is on runners and every inch is expensive.

A cabinet is not sized to a wall in a bathroom; it is sized to a basin, and then checked against the wall. The sequence that avoids the two expensive mistakes — a bowl the fabricator cannot land, and a faucet that fouls the backsplash — goes like this.

1. Choose the basin before the cabinet, and have it physically in hand before the top is templated. Undermount, drop-in and vessel all cut differently, and the fabricator wants the bowl, not a drawing of it.
2. Give the stone a margin. An undermount bowl needs solid countertop to land on at both sides of the cut-out, so the cabinet wants to be usefully wider than the basin — as a working rule we would not put a 21-inch bowl in a 24-inch cabinet without asking the fabricator first, and at 30 inches and up the question stops arising.
3. Check the faucet centres and the tap height against the wall behind. A tall spout under a low mirror or a wall-mounted set changes where the holes go, and that is a top decision made before the top is cut.
4. Only now look at the wall. Take the width the basin wants, add whatever the room allows, and buy the wider box — because from the table above you already know the extra inches cost almost nothing.
5. And measure the rough-in: the height of the drain centre off the finished floor, and whether the floor is about to be raised by new tile. Both change where the trap lands inside the cabinet.

The 42-inch box deserves a note of its own, because people ask what it is for. GN VSB42-34 at $542.75 is a single-bowl cabinet on a wide wall — one basin, doors below, no drawers — and it exists for the bathroom that wants a long uninterrupted counter rather than storage. It is also the cheapest way to fill 42 inches of bathroom wall with cabinetry, by a wide margin. The panel across the top of this cabinet looks like a drawer and is not one. It is a false front, fixed in place, covering the strip of cabinet directly beneath the basin where a drawer could not travel because the trap and the tailpiece are in the way. Nothing is wrong with the cabinet — it is built that way on purpose, and every sink base in every kitchen and bathroom in the world has the same feature.

Two things are worth knowing about it. It is a real door front in the same five-piece shaker profile as everything else, so it keeps the rhythm of the run and nobody standing in the room can tell. And it is the standard place to fit a tip-out tray — a shallow hinged tray that takes exactly the things that otherwise sit on the counter. Be realistic about the volume. A 30-inch sink base is thirty inches wide and 21 deep, and the middle of it — call it a foot across and most of the depth — is occupied by a trap, a tailpiece, two stop valves and their supply lines. What is left is two tall side pockets and a strip across the front, and the shelf, if there is one, has to be cut around or set below the pipework.

So this cabinet stores in columns either side of the drain, not in rows across it. Tall bottles in the side pockets, a bin on the floor to one side, a caddy on the other. The middle is dead, which is why the U-shaped pull-out organisers exist — shaped to wrap a trap rather than fight it.

The wider the box, the better this gets, and not proportionally — a 36-inch cabinet has the same drain in the middle as a 24-inch one, so all six extra inches go to the useful side pockets. Which is the same conclusion as the price table reached from the other direction, and the reason this page has one recommendation rather than seven: take the widest sink base the wall will give you.

• A primary bathroom, 60 inches, one bowl. Spend here rather than on a second basin; 60 inches is the threshold where two bowls become possible and the point where one bowl with drawers still beats them.
