Pipes, valves and the blind corner: fitting a Galaxy Pistachio Green double door base around what is already in the wall
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Take the old cabinets off a kitchen wall and the long stretch between the sink and the range is rarely empty. The gas valve for the cooker is there, the dishwasher’s hose runs through it, a floor register blows into it and an outlet somebody added in 1998 sits at knee height. The wide two-door boxes on this page are the ones that land in front of all that, and in Galaxy Pistachio Green they are also the widest single faces of colour in the base run. This article is about the first of those facts: what a double door base has to live with behind it, why doors rather than drawers belong in front of anything you may need to reach, and how the wide box meets the corner.
What is usually behind a wide base before it goes in
Every house is different, but in a remodel the same services keep turning up in the same places, and most of them end up behind whichever box is widest. We ask for a photograph of the bare wall with a tape measure in shot for exactly this reason: a valve that is not on the plan becomes a hole cut on site in a hurry.
| What is in the wall or floor | Where it usually sits | What the cabinet has to do |
|---|---|---|
| Gas shut-off for a range or cooktop | In the box beside the range, low on the back wall | Stay reachable in seconds, without emptying anything first |
| Dishwasher supply and drain | Running from the sink base, through a side, to the machine | Take a bored hole in a side panel, lined up before install |
| Water line to a fridge ice maker | A small valve near the fridge end of the run | Stay reachable; a drip here is found late |
| Floor heating or cooling register | On the floor where the old toe kick was | Be re-ducted to a grille in the toe kick, not buried |
| An outlet at knee height | Anywhere along the wall | Be moved above the counter, or reached through a cut-out |
None of that is exotic. It is simply the reason the wide box in the middle of a run is so often the one an installer has to work around, and why it is worth choosing its type for access as well as for storage.
Why a valve should sit behind doors, not drawers
A drawer bank covers the back wall with its drawer boxes. To reach a shut-off behind one you pull every drawer out of its runners, empty it, and put your arm into the gap — which is not what anyone wants to be doing with water on the floor or a smell of gas in the room. Behind two doors, the same valve is one reach away: open both, move the colander, turn the handle.
That is the whole case for the box type on this page in the positions above. The Galaxy double door bases carry a drawer tier across the top and an open cavity below it, 34½″ high overall and 24″ deep, with the back and sides in ½″ veneered plywood and a ¾″ plywood shelf. A pipe or cable that has to pass through the back can be bored on site with a hole saw from the inside, sized to the pipe with a little clearance, and anything that might need a hand on it later stays in the open space below the shelf. If the box in front of the valve does not need a drawer at all, the drawerless version is on the full height double page and costs less at every width it shares.
The wide widths, priced, and where each one tends to land
The double door line runs from 24″ to 48″. The positions below are where we most often draw each width in a run with services in it; they are habits, not rules. Prices are the figures displayed on the review date — the grid above the article is the authority if they have moved.
| Width | Box · price | Where we most often draw it |
|---|---|---|
| 24″ | GPG B24 · $471.25 | Between the sink base and the dishwasher’s far side, with the dishwasher hoses passing through |
| 27″ | GPG B27 · $516.75 | Beside the range where a 24″ leaves an awkward remainder |
| 30″ | GPG B30 · $555.75 | The range neighbour with the gas valve in it |
| 33″ | GPG B33 · $633.75 · or B33SDF, same price | Under a window in an L-plan where the sink is elsewhere |
| 36″ | GPG B36 · $676.00 · or B36SDF, same price | Next to a blind corner, or over a floor register re-ducted to the kick |
| 39″ | GPG B39 · $718.25 | The long stretch opposite an island |
| 42″ | GPG B42 · $757.25 | A wide gap where two boxes would put a seam in front of a valve |
| 48″ | GPG B48 · $815.75 | The end wall of a U, as one piece |
The SDF versions at 33″ and 36″ carry a single drawer front across the top instead of two; they cost the same as the standard box, so choose by what the drawer tier should look like rather than by price. And past 36 inches it is worth asking whether one box or two is better — one wide box keeps a seam out of the middle of a wall, two narrower ones each get their own pair of doors.
The wide box that meets a blind corner

In an L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen, one end of a wide box is often the first cabinet off a corner. The cheapest way round a corner is a blind corner base — GPG BLB36/39 at $614.25, BLB39/42 at $685.75, and BLB42/45 or BLB48/51 at $767.00 each on the corner base page. Its buried end tucks behind the first box on the other wall, and that box is very often a 30″ or 36″ double door base.
Three things go wrong at that joint, and all three are fixed on paper. The door and pull of the wide box have to clear the face of the corner cabinet, which is what the filler at the corner is for — GPG BF3 at $26.00 is the usual answer. The corner cabinet’s own door has to open past the wide box’s drawer pulls. And if the corner is getting a pull-out — GPG BPO-BLB42/45-L or -R at $1,277.25 for the 42/45 box — the carriage swings out into the space in front of its neighbour, so the drawing has to show both open at once. If none of that appeals, the lazy Susan turns the corner without a buried end.
The colour matters at this joint in one specific way. An inside corner is the darkest spot in a run: it gets light from one side only and the counter overhang shades it. A mid-tone greyed green reads a step deeper and greyer there than it does on a sample held at a window, so judge your door sample in the corner itself, and order the corner filler in the same finish so the strip between the two boxes looks like part of the run rather than a gap in it.
Under a window, with no sink in it
Not every window has a sink under it. In many L-plans the sink goes on the long wall and a wide base sits under the window on the short one, where it inherits the window’s own problems. Older houses often have a radiator or a heating register there, and a cabinet cannot simply be set over a working heater — the heat has to be moved or re-ducted to the toe kick first, which is a job for the heating contractor before our boxes arrive. Check the height of the sill against 36″ of finished counter plus any backsplash, too: a low sill means the splash stops short or the window trim is cut.
The window position is also where a 33″ SDF earns its keep. One long drawer front under a window lines up with the sill and the glass above it; two fronts put a seam in the middle of a centred view.
Send a services sketch with the plan
- Photograph each wall bare, with a tape measure running along the floor and another up the wall.
- Mark every valve, pipe, outlet and floor register, with its height and its distance from a corner.
- Say which of them are staying and which are being moved by a plumber, electrician or heating contractor.
- Tell us which boxes you would like as drawer banks, so we can move valves out from behind them — the three-drawer page has those.
- Send it all to the free 3D design service: a designer replies within one business day, and the drawing and quote follow within 24–48 hours.
Galaxy boxes arrive assembled in about 7 days to 3 weeks, so the services work can be done while the order is in transit. For narrower gaps there are the single door boxes, and the full finish is on the collection page. If a wall has already been opened and you want a second opinion on what is in it, call us on (609) 900-3358.
Common questions
- Can you put a base cabinet in front of a gas shut-off valve?
- Yes, provided the valve stays easy to reach. Put a door box in front of it rather than a drawer bank, so reaching it means opening two doors rather than emptying and removing drawers.
- Can you cut holes in the back of a base cabinet for pipes?
- Yes. The Allure box is ½″ veneered plywood, and pipe holes are bored on site with a hole saw from inside the cabinet, sized to the pipe with a little clearance. Put the positions on the drawing so the installer knows before the box goes in.
- What happens to a floor vent under a new base cabinet?
- The usual fix is to re-duct it to a grille in the toe kick, so the cabinet floor stays whole and the air still reaches the room. That is heating work, done before the cabinets are set.
- How much filler do I need beside a blind corner cabinet?
- Usually a 3″ filler, GPG BF3 at $26.00, so the wide box’s door and pull clear the corner cabinet’s face. The drawing should show both doors open at once to prove it.
- How much is a 36 inch double door base in this finish?
- GPG B36 is $676.00 on our grid on the review date; the single-drawer-front version, B36SDF, is the same price. The drawerless B36FD is on the full height double page.
- Does a green cabinet look darker in a corner?
- Any mid-tone colour does. A corner gets light from one side and sits under the counter overhang, so this greyed sage reads a step deeper there. Judge the sample in the corner, not at the window.
