Same title, three prices: choosing a drawer insert for a drawer you already own

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

This is the cheapest way to make a kitchen feel expensive and the hardest page on the site to shop honestly, because the catalogue will not tell you what any of these parts actually are. Every one of them is listed as a drawer insert, with a width range in brackets, at a price. Whether the thing in the box is a cutlery divider, a knife block, a peg system for plates or a spice rack is not stated anywhere on the listing — and at 18 inches, three genuinely different products share one identical title at three prices between $429.00 and $1,111.50. So this page is about how to buy one anyway.

Sold against a fit range, which is a cabinet width in disguise

Kitchen drawer fitted with wooden dividers holding cutlery and utensils
A divided drawer is a one-motion drawer. Nothing is lifted out to reach anything else.

The loose inserts drop into a drawer you already own. They are sold against a range — fits 15″–18″ drawers, fits 21″–24″, and so on — where the numbers are the cabinet widths the drawer came from rather than the interior measurement of the drawer itself. One part therefore covers two cabinet sizes, which is convenient and also the source of most of the confusion, because a tray sized for a range sits loose in the smaller of the two.

Ask for the actual outside dimensions of the insert before ordering, and compare them with the inside of your drawer rather than the outside of your cabinet. A divider that is a quarter-inch over will not go in; a divider two inches under will slide back and forth every time the drawer closes, which is a noise you will notice for ten years.

Two things in that table are worth flagging before you pick from it. The prefix is not consistent — most of these read GNK and four read GN, which is a real feature of the live list rather than a typo here, and quoting the wrong one slows an order down. And the price is not a simple function of size: GN CD-33/36 at $526.50 is more than two and a half times GNK CD-15/18 at $201.50 for a part that is roughly twice as wide, which tells you the codes are different products, not one product in sizes.

Three different 18-inch inserts, one identical listing title

The inserts that arrive with their own runners are a separate family, and this is where the catalogue becomes genuinely unhelpful. Three of them are eighteen inches wide. All three are listed as an 18″ drawer insert with hardware. They are not the same part, and the prices are not close.

GNK DTD-DB36 BLUM36″$932.75
GNK CHD-B18 BLUM18″$1,111.50

GN DCD-18 BLUM at $429.00, GNK CBKD-B18 BLUM at $672.75 and GNK CHD-B18 BLUM at $1,111.50 occupy the same eighteen inches and differ by $682.50 end to end. The DCD family runs in a clean ladder from 15 to 36 inches and is plainly one product in sizes; the B18 codes and the DTD pair are something else, and the DTD codes carry a DB prefix in them, which reads as a part built for a drawer-bank drawer rather than the shallow top drawer of a door base.

The useful move is not to guess. Ask us to confirm what each code actually contains before it goes on an order, in writing, against the code. That is a two-minute answer for us and the difference between a spice rack and a knife block for you. Anyone who tells you what a CHD is from the title alone has read the same title you have.

The drawer height nobody checks until the drawer will not shut

Width is on every listing. Height is on none of them, and height is what actually fails. A drawer bank in this line gives you tiers of very different depths — a shallow one at the top, deeper ones below — and an insert sized for the shallow tier floats uselessly in a deep one while an insert built for a deep tier will not clear the worktop rail above a shallow one.

Measure the clear interior height of the specific drawer, from the drawer bottom to the underside of whatever is above it — the worktop, the rail, or the drawer box above. Then subtract about half an inch for the insert to pass without dragging. Two failure modes come out of skipping that step: a divider that sits proud and stops the drawer closing the last inch, and a knife block whose handles stand above the rim and jam on the frame the first time you push it shut hard.

The related trap is putting a cutlery divider in a pan drawer because it was the drawer that was free. A cutlery tray in a nine-inch-deep drawer wastes two thirds of the volume and puts your forks at the bottom of a pit. Divide the shallow drawers; leave the deep ones as deep drawers, with a peg system if anything in them needs to stop sliding.

How many a kitchen actually needs

Two is the honest number for most houses, and we say that knowing it is the opposite of an upsell. One cutlery divider in the shallow drawer nearest the dishwasher, because that is where forks get put away and the distance between the rack and the drawer is the only thing that decides whether they get put away at once. One utensil or knife layout in the shallow drawer nearest the hob, for the same reason in reverse.

A third earns its place only if something specific is homeless: a serious knife collection with nowhere safe, a spice habit that has outgrown a wall cabinet, or a drawer of plates that slide into each other. Past that you are buying joinery for the sake of it, and the drawers that get divided but not used are the ones you notice every time you open them.

  • Beside the dishwasher — a cutlery divider, in the shallowest drawer. GNK CD-21/24 at $273.00 for a 21 or 24-inch bank.
  • Beside the hob — utensils or a knife layout, again in the shallowest drawer. GNK UT-15/24 at $227.50 covers the narrow widths.
  • Anywhere a pan drawer rattles — a peg system rather than a tray: GNK DPS-18/27 at $256.75 or GNK DPS-30/33 at $302.25.
  • The wide banks — GN CD-27/30 at $399.75 and GN CD-33/36 at $526.50 exist, and at that money a plain drawer with nothing in it is a defensible choice.

One practical note that has nothing to do with the parts. A drawer in this line is a ⅝″ solid-wood dovetail box on Blum Tandem plus Blumotion runners, which means it closes itself from about two inches out. An insert that fouls the opening will not announce itself with a bang; the drawer will simply stop short and sit a quarter-inch proud of the run. On a mid-tone grey front that misalignment is easy to see across a room, because the shadow line between fronts is doing more work in this colour than it does on white. Check the drawer closes flush before you load the insert.

Nothing here changes the cabinet, so nothing here is urgent

This is the most relaxed line on the accessory list. A loose tray drops into a drawer that already exists; a hardware version brings its own runners and fits the same drawer box. No cabinet has to be built differently, bored differently or handed differently to accept one, which means none of this has to be settled while the kitchen is still a drawing.

The honest sequence is therefore the opposite of what most quotes assume. Order the cabinets. Let the kitchen arrive, get loaded and be lived in for a month or two. Then buy inserts for the two drawers that have annoyed you, because you will know which two — and they are frequently not the drawers you would have guessed from a plan. The whole insert list is there whenever you get to it, and the parts are the same parts at the same prices.

The single exception is aesthetic rather than practical: the timber in these trays is a natural wood, so two ordered eighteen months apart will not be an exact match to each other. If a run of three identical drawers is going to be opened side by side in front of guests, buy those three together. For everything else, buying late is the better plan — and it is cheaper, because half the inserts people specify from a drawing never get used.

Common questions

How do you size a drawer insert?
By the cabinet width the drawer came from — the listings read "fits 21″–24″ drawers" and those numbers are cabinet widths, not interior measurements. Then check the drawer’s clear interior height yourself and allow about half an inch of clearance above the insert, because height is not published anywhere.
What is the difference between the three 18-inch drawer inserts?
Price, and that is all the listing tells you: GN DCD-18 BLUM is $429.00, GNK CBKD-B18 BLUM is $672.75 and GNK CHD-B18 BLUM is $1,111.50, all under an identical title. They are different products. Ask us to confirm contents and outside dimensions against the specific code before ordering.
Which drawer organizer fits a 30-inch drawer?
As a loose tray, GNK DPS-30/33 at $302.25 or GN CD-27/30 at $399.75. With its own runners, GNK DCD-30 BLUM at $581.75 or the deeper GNK DTD-DB30 BLUM at $884.00. The DB in that last code reads as a part meant for a drawer-bank drawer rather than a shallow top drawer.
Can you put a cutlery insert in a deep pan drawer?
You can, and it is usually a waste. A cutlery tray is a few inches deep, so in a nine-inch drawer it leaves two thirds of the volume dead and puts your cutlery at the bottom of a pit. Divide the shallow drawers and leave the deep ones deep, with a peg system if things slide.
How many drawer inserts does a kitchen need?
Two, in most houses: cutlery in the shallow drawer nearest the dishwasher and utensils or knives in the shallow drawer nearest the hob. A third only if something specific has nowhere to live. Past that the joinery stops paying for itself.
Do drawer inserts come with hardware?
Some do and some do not, and the title says which: anything reading "with Hardware (Blum)" arrives with its own runners and is a heavier proposition, while the plain listings are loose trays that drop into a drawer you already own. The loose ones start at $201.50 and the hardware versions at $354.25.
