Four drawers in a narrow box: turning a 15- to 21-inch gap into the best cabinet in the run

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Most kitchens have an awkward gap — the 18 inches left over between a range and a wall, or the 15 inches beside a dishwasher — and most kitchens waste it on a filler panel or a door base nobody opens. A Fabuwood Galaxy Frost 4 drawer base cabinet is the fix. It exists in three widths only, 15″, 18″ and 21″, and in a well-planned run it ends up being the cabinet you open most.

Why it stops at 21 inches

Three SKUs, and no more: GF DB15-4, GF DB18-4 and GF DB21-4. Ask for a 30″ version and no dealer can get one, because it would be a bad cabinet.

The drawer face on a base is fixed at roughly 30″ regardless of width. Divide it four ways and each front lands near 7½″, leaving something like four to five inches of clear space inside the box. A drawer that shallow and 30 inches wide is mostly floor — you would be paying for two more dovetailed boxes and four more runners to store the same single layer of things you could store in one drawer of a three-drawer bank. Fabuwood does not build it, and that restraint is correct.

Turn it around and you get the pattern that governs the whole family: the more drawers, the narrower the box. Four drawers cap out at 21″, two drawers start at 24″, and three drawers cover everything. Shallow drawers only earn their runners in narrow boxes, because in a narrow box a single layer is all you were ever going to get.

  • GF DB15-4 — 15″ wide, around $780. About 10″ of interior width. Spices, wraps, small tools.
  • GF DB18-4 — 18″ wide, around $800. About 13″ interior. The width where a foil box lies side to side.
  • GF DB21-4 — 21″ wide, around $832. About 16″ interior — the only one a half-sheet pan lies flat in.

When a Fabuwood Galaxy Frost 4 drawer base cabinet beats a filler

Kitchen drawer fitted with organizer dividers holding utensils and small items
Shallow and narrow is the geometry small kitchen items actually want.

Cabinets step in 3″ and rooms do not, so every run has a remainder. The default trades are to scribe it away in a filler panel or to hand it to a narrow door base. Both are defensible; both usually cost you more than they save.

Run the numbers on an 18″ gap. A filler costs very little and returns nothing. An 18″ single door base runs a few hundred dollars and gives you one shelf at knee height that you will use for the salad spinner. Four drawers cost around $800 and give you four separate, fully extending, waist-and-knee-height layers in a footprint 18 inches wide. Per dollar it is the worst cabinet in the kitchen; per opening per week it is comfortably the best.

The decision rule we use: if the gap is 15″ or wider and it sits inside the working triangle, put drawers in it. If it is under 15″, or it is at the dead end of a run where nobody stands, take the filler and spend the money on the prep zone. Fillers and scribe are covered in our end panels and fillers guide.

What fits in four inches of clear height

Narrow pull-out spice storage in a kitchen cabinet
Spice jars stand upright with room to read the labels — that is the use case.

Assume roughly four to five inches of clear height per drawer and about 21″ of front-to-back run, and the fit list gets specific fast.

Real items against real clearances
ItemFits?Detail
Standard spice jarsYes, all three widthsA typical jar is about 4″ tall and stands upright with the label readable from above
Foil and plastic wrap boxesYes — front to back at 15″, either way at 18″A 12″ roll box needs about 13″ of interior width to lie side to side
Half-sheet pan, 18″ × 13″Flat in the 21″ onlyNeeds about 16″ of interior width; it will not stand on edge in a drawer this shallow
Cooling racks and cutting boardsYes, flatStack them; there is no vertical room for a tray divider here
Utensils and gadgetsYesTwo shallow drawers of utensils beats one deep one you dig through
Pots, stockpots, Dutch ovensNoNot close — that is what the two-drawer units are for

The half-sheet row is the one that decides the order for a lot of people. If you bake, the 21″ unit is not a marginal upgrade over the 18″ for about thirty dollars — it is the difference between a working tray drawer and a drawer full of things stacked at an angle.

Which drawer base to put where

All three configurations share the same box, the same ⅝″ dovetailed drawers and the same Blum Tandem plus Blumotion runners. What differs is how the 30 inches of face is divided, and therefore what the cabinet can hold.

Two drawers, 24″ to 36″

Ten or eleven inches of clear height per drawer — the only configuration that takes a stockpot with the lid on. One per kitchen, under the cooktop. See the two-drawer sizes.

Three drawers, 12″ to 36″

The default, and the only one available in every width. A shallow utensil drawer over two mid-depth ones, which is the right answer for plates, containers and general storage. Pricing and the drawers-versus-doors math are on the three-drawer page.

Door bases, when nothing needs to slide

A shelf behind a door costs about a third less and is the right call for the sink cabinet, the trash pull-out and tall small appliances. Compare single-door and double-door bases in the same paint.

ADA-height drawer bases

If the run needs to meet an accessible counter height, the same narrow drawer widths exist at 32½″ high as GF ADA-DB15, ADA-DB18, ADA-DB21 and ADA-DB24. Browse the ADA base cabinets.

How they ship, and the one thing to check on arrival

Galaxy is the fastest-shipping series Fabuwood makes — 7 days to 3 weeks against 3 to 5 weeks for the rest of the Allure line — and every unit arrives pre-assembled with the boxes fitted and the runners adjusted at the factory. That is genuinely useful here: aligning four drawer fronts across a narrow box is fussy work, and you are not doing it.

It also makes these the heaviest cartons in the shipment. A drawer bank has the same box as a door cabinet plus three or four dovetailed drawers and two runners per drawer, so the freight weight roughly doubles. Have somewhere to put them: a garage or a spare room, not a hallway.

Common questions

What widths does the four-drawer configuration come in?
Only 15″, 18″ and 21″ — GF DB15-4, GF DB18-4 and GF DB21-4, all 34½″ high and 24″ deep. Wider versions are not made, because four fronts across a 30″ box would give you four nearly empty shallow trays.
How deep is each drawer?
Each front is roughly 7½″ tall, leaving about four to five inches of clear height inside. Enough for spice jars upright, wrap boxes, utensils and flat trays. Not enough for pots — order a two-drawer unit for those.
Which width should I order?
The 21″ if a half-sheet pan needs to lie flat, since it needs about 16″ of interior width. The 18″ if the gap allows it and you want matching factory dividers, which exist at 18″ and 21″ but not at 15″. The 15″ only when the space genuinely will not take more.
Is this better than a filler in an awkward gap?
If the gap is 15″ or wider and it sits where you actually work, yes — four extending layers in an 18-inch footprint is more usable storage than anything else that fits. At a dead end of a run where nobody stands, take the filler and spend the money on the prep zone instead.
What does one cost?
Roughly $780 to $832 depending on width, against about $470 to $560 for a door base at a comparable size. The premium buys four dovetailed solid wood boxes and eight undermount runners.
Can I get drawer dividers for these?
For the 18″ and 21″ units, yes — GF KCUP-18, GF DCD-18 BLUM and GF KCUP-21/24 are made in this finish. Nothing factory-made fits the 15″ box, so plan on aftermarket trays there.
