How to size a sink base, and why it is the cabinet most likely to fail
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
A sink base has a job before it has a size. Fabuwood Galaxy Frost sink base cabinets run 21″ to 42″ wide at the standard 34½″ height and 24″ depth — but the width you order is decided by the bowl you have already bought, not by the gap left over at the end of the run.
Size it to the bowl, not to the leftover space
The working rule is that the cabinet has to be at least three inches wider than the outside dimension of the sink. A 33″ single bowl — the most popular size sold today — needs a 36″ box, not a 33″ one. People order the matching number constantly, and it does not go in. Those three inches are not comfort; they are the face frame stiles and the room the mounting hardware needs on each side.
It helps to know that three different widths are in play at once, and they are all different numbers. The box interior is roughly the nominal width less one inch, because the two side panels are ½″ each — so a 33″ unit is about 32″ inside. The face frame opening is roughly three inches narrower than nominal, which is what limits any bin, tray or pull-out you want to get in and out later. And the countertop cutout is its own dimension entirely, taken from the sink manufacturer's template, not from the cabinet.
| Sink (outside width) | Smallest base that works | SKU |
|---|---|---|
| 22″–24″ single bowl | 27″ | GF SB27 |
| 25″ single bowl (the builder default) | 30″ | GF SB30 |
| 30″ bowl or a 32″ double | 33″ | GF SB33 |
| 33″ bowl — the popular big single | 36″ | GF SB36 |
| 36″ bowl, or any bowl plus a filtered-water tap | 39″ or 42″ | GF SB39 / GF SB42 |
The 21″ and 24″ widths exist for bar sinks, laundry rooms and prep sinks in an island — they will not take a main kitchen bowl. If you are working in a bathroom instead, the vanity line has its own sizes: see the matching vanities.
Undermount bowls deserve one extra check. The clips or brackets that hold the sink up against the underside of the stone need to land somewhere, and on a tight fit they collide with the cabinet sides. If the sink is undermount and you are at the bottom of the size band, go up one width. Nobody has ever regretted three extra inches under a sink.
There is no top drawer, and SDF only changes how it looks
Every unit on this page has a false drawer front across the top: a panel that matches the drawer fronts on either side of it and does not open. There is no drawer behind it because the bowl and the P-trap occupy that space. This surprises people who counted drawer fronts on a plan and assumed they were all drawers.
Two SKUs on this page — GF SB36SDF and GF SB33SDF — carry the letters SDF, for single drawer front. On the wider units the false front is normally supplied as two panels side by side; the SDF version gives you one continuous panel across the full width instead. It is a purely visual choice, and the right one depends on the drawer bases next to it: match two-panel to two-panel, one-piece to one-piece, or the sink run will look subtly off in a way nobody can name. Tell us which look the rest of your run has and we will order to match.
If you want that dead space back, a tilt-out tray retrofits into the false front and holds sponges and scrubbers. It is a small part with a big daily payoff — the cabinet accessories page lists what fits in this finish, and our guide to pull-out and beam-mounted organizers covers what else can live under a sink without fighting the plumbing.
What the rough-in has to clear
The back of a sink base is open or lightly panelled precisely so a plumber can get at the wall. Before the box is set, check that the drain and the supply stops land inside the cabinet footprint and above the floor of it — a stop that ends up behind a side panel means cutting the box on site, and a drain that lands too low means the trap fouls the cabinet deck.
The toe recess is the other thing to look at: a dishwasher drain line and a disposal cord both want to cross under the cabinet, and both are happier routed before the box is screwed to the floor than after. Everything here arrives pre-assembled, so there is no build stage in which to make these decisions — they happen at the drawing stage, or they happen with a hole saw. Our kitchen dimensions checklist lists what to measure first.
The cabinet most likely to be damaged, over its own lifetime

Cabinets in this line carry a limited lifetime warranty and the box is ½″ veneered plywood with a natural veneer interior. None of that helps against a slow drip. The unit under the sink is the only cabinet in the kitchen with plumbing inside it, and it is the one nobody looks into except to pull out the trash. A weeping supply stop or a tired disposal gasket can run for months behind a closed door before the deck swells and the joint opens.
The fixes are cheap and they are all about noticing early rather than building something waterproof:
- Line the deck with a light-colored waterproof mat or a moulded sink tray. On a pale liner a single drop shows; on a wood-veneer deck it does not.
- Put a battery leak alarm on the floor of the cabinet. They cost less than a filler strip and they are loud.
- Look at the back wall of the cabinet every time you change the trash bag. That is roughly weekly, which is early enough.
- Keep bleach and drain cleaner in a caddy or a bin, not standing loose. A leaking bottle does the same damage as a leaking trap and gets diagnosed later.
- Blum hinges here are quick-release, so the doors pop off in seconds. Take them off before anyone works in there instead of scratching the paint around them.
If the damage is already done, replacing one box in a program finish is straightforward — the paint is a catalog color, not a batch match, so a single replacement unit lands the same shade as the ten-year-old cabinets beside it. Our guide to how long kitchen cabinets last works through which parts fail first, and the cabinet care guide covers cleaning a painted white without dulling it.
Sink base, farm sink, diagonal base or diagonal front?
Four different cabinets share the word "sink" in this finish and they are not substitutes for one another. Two of them are full cabinets, one is a full cabinet turned on an angle, and one is not a cabinet at all. Price is the fastest tell — if the numbers are that far apart, you are not comparing the same object.
| Cabinet | What is in the carton | Wall it consumes | Price band | Order it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sink base — you are here | Complete box, open bay, false drawer front across the top | 21″–42″ on one wall | $386.75 – $696.80 | The default. A drop-in or undermount bowl on a straight run |
| Farm sink base | Complete box with the top front rail cut away and the sink carried from inside | 30″, 33″ or 36″ on one wall | $806.00 – $950.30 | You have already picked a specific apron-front sink |
| Diagonal sink base | Complete box set at 45° across a corner, 36″ deep on the diagonal | 36″ on BOTH walls | $617.50 – $742.30 | There is a window in the corner, or the corner has no better job |
| Diagonal sink front | A face only — frame and door. No box, no sides, no back, and no floor unless you order the floor version | 36″ on both walls, and you build everything behind it | $100.75 – $274.30 | Your installer is site-building a corner sink cavity |
If the answer is still not obvious, send the room and we will draw it. A free 3D layout settles a corner argument in a way a product grid never will, and it is faster than returning a cabinet. Everything above is the same door, the same paint and the same hardware — see the full collection or the wider base cabinet range.
Common questions
- What size sink base do I need for a 33 inch sink?
- A 36″ cabinet — GF SB36. The base has to be about three inches wider than the outside dimension of the bowl, because the face frame stiles and the mounting hardware take that space. A 33″ sink will not go into a 33″ cabinet.
- Why does the sink base have no top drawer?
- The bowl and the P-trap occupy the space a top drawer would need. What you see across the top is a false drawer front that matches the drawer bases beside it. A tilt-out tray can be retrofitted into it for sponges if you want that space back.
- What is the difference between SB36 and SB36SDF?
- Only the false front. The standard unit carries two panels side by side across the top; the SDF version carries one continuous panel across the full width. Pick whichever matches the drawer fronts on the cabinets next to it.
- Can I put a farmhouse sink in one of these?
- No. An apron-front sink needs a cabinet with the top front rail cut away and an internal platform to carry the weight — that is a different cabinet, sold on the farm sink page in the same paint. Cutting a standard sink base to fit removes structure and voids the warranty.
- How much do they cost?
- On this page they run $386.75 to $696.80 depending on width, in the same Frost paint, Blum soft-close hardware and ½″ box as the rest of the line. The 21″ and 24″ widths sit at the bottom of that band and the 42″ at the top.
- Is the inside of the cabinet finished?
- Yes — a natural wood veneer finished interior on a ½″ veneered plywood box. It is still worth lining the deck under the sink with a waterproof mat, because a finished interior is not a waterproof one.
