One drawer bank, top to bottom: fitting Galaxy Horizon drawer inserts tier by tier

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Prices quoted in this article were read off the grid on the review date; the live price grid on this page governs.

Most advice about organizers treats the kitchen as a row of identical drawers. It is not. A drawer bank is a stack of different depths, and the tier you are standing over decides what an insert is for. The Galaxy Horizon drawer inserts make sense when read that way: a shallow top drawer that wants dividing, a middle one that usually wants to be left alone, and a deep bottom drawer where the only useful insert is one that stops things sliding. This page walks one bank at a time, prices three banks fitted out completely, points out the widths where an insert simply is not made, and ends with how to keep a wood insert clean without harming it.

Two, three or four drawers: the bank decides the inserts

A drawer bank shown in a painted grey for its proportions. The depth of each tier, not the colour, decides what goes in it.

This finish sells three kinds of drawer bank, and they are three different organizing problems. The two-drawer bases (GH DB24-2 at $724.75, GH DB30-2 at $835.25, GH DB36-2 at $1,017.25) are two deep drawers and nothing shallow. The three-drawer bases run from GH DB15 at $627.25 to GH DB36 at $1,030.25 and give you the classic shallow-over-deep stack. The four-drawer bases come only narrow (GH DB15-4 at $780.00, GH DB18-4 at $799.50, GH DB21-4 at $832.00) and trade depth for more tiers.

Every drawer box in the line is the same construction: a ⅝″ solid-wood dovetail box on Tandem plus Blumotion full-extension runners, with a five-piece front. What changes between banks is how the height is shared out. That is the whole reason an insert that is perfect in one bank is wasted in another.

One caution before the tiers. The listings title every one of these parts simply as a drawer insert with a fit range. The codes read as cutlery (CD), utensils (UT), knives (DKI), a peg system (DPS) and K-Cup pods (KCUP), and the ones sold with Blum hardware (DCD, DTD, CBKD, CHD) are a separate family whose contents are not described at all. Treat those readings as a shortlist and confirm the contents of any code with us before it goes on an order.

The top tier: the only drawer that should always be divided

The shallow top drawer holds things that lie flat and get picked up one at a time: forks, spoons, spatulas, a peeler, a knife. Without an insert they drift into a heap every time the drawer closes on its soft-close. With one, each item has a slot and the drawer can be read at a glance. This is where almost all the value of an insert is concentrated.

Choose the top-tier insert by what the drawer is near, and by the width of the bank. For cutlery, the CD family covers every width without a gap: GHZ CD-15/18 at $201.50, GHZ CD-21/24 at $273.00, GH CD-27/30 at $399.75 and GH CD-33/36 at $526.50. For cooking utensils near the hob, GHZ UT-15/24 at $227.50 covers the narrow banks only. For knives, GHZ DKI-18/24 at $214.50 fits 18 to 24 inches and nothing else. For pods, GH KCUP-18 at $224.25 and GH KCUP-21/24 at $266.50.

That list has holes, and they matter when you draw the bank. There is no utensil insert above 24 inches, no knife insert below 18 or above 24, and no pod insert above 24. If the hob sits beside a 30-inch bank and you wanted the utensils there, either the bank changes width or the utensils go in a cutlery-style divider. Better to find that out now than to discover it with the drawer already installed.

The middle tier: usually best left open

The middle drawer of a three-drawer bank is deeper than the top and shallower than the bottom, and it is where people put the things that do not have a category: foil and film, bags, tea towels, containers with their lids. Those are awkward shapes that change every week, and a fixed divider fights them.

Our advice, and it is advice rather than anything on the listing, is to leave this tier undivided and see how it fills. If it turns into a heap after a month, the fix is usually a couple of loose boxes you already own rather than a fitted part. The catalogue has nothing specifically sized for a middle tier, which is honest in its way: this is the drawer that works best open.

The exception is the four-drawer bank. There the two middle tiers are shallow enough to be divided like a top drawer, which is the whole point of buying one. An 18-inch four-drawer bank can take a utensil insert in one tier and a knife insert in the next, both from the narrow widths the catalogue does cover.

The deep bottom drawer, and the peg system that stops at 33 inches

A deep drawer is for pans, plates and bowls, and the problem it has is not finding things but things sliding. Stacked plates shift on the soft-close, a pan lid slides under a pan, and by the end of the week the drawer is a stack you have to dig through. A peg board stops that: pegs set into a base, moved to wherever the plates or pans need to be held.

The DPS codes are the peg inserts on this list: GHZ DPS-18/27 at $256.75 and GHZ DPS-30/33 at $302.25. Read those fit ranges carefully, because they stop at 33 inches. A 36-inch bank has no peg insert listed, which is worth knowing before you choose a 36 for the plate drawer. At 36 inches the bottom drawer is either left open or organised with loose racks of your own.

Two parts with the Blum hardware family deserve a mention here. GHZ DTD-DB30 BLUM at $884.00 and GHZ DTD-DB36 BLUM at $932.75 carry a drawer-base code in their names, which suggests they are built for a drawer of a drawer bank. What they actually are is not on the listing. If you are planning a deep drawer around one, ask first; at those prices, the answer is worth two minutes.

Three banks, fitted out completely and priced

Here is what a sensible full fit-out costs, one bank at a time, using only the inserts whose fit range covers the bank. Each is a real combination from the live list.

Drawer bank plus inserts, displayed prices at review
BankTop tierOther tierBank + inserts

GH DB18-4, 18″ four-drawer · $799.50GHZ UT-15/24 utensils · $227.50Second: GHZ DKI-18/24 knives · $214.50$1,241.50

The inserts add a lot relative to the bank: $702.00 on a $845.00 bank at 30 inches, $529.75 on the 24, and $442.00 on the four-drawer 18. That is the honest reason to fit out one bank properly rather than scatter an insert into every drawer in the kitchen. A single well-organized bank beside the dishwasher or the hob does most of the work, and the rest of the drawers can stay open until they prove they need something.

The 24-inch three-drawer and the 18-inch four-drawer come out within $6.50 of each other, fitted. They are different kitchens: the three-drawer puts the plates underneath, the four-drawer gives you two divided tiers and no plate drawer. Choose by whether this bank is a cooking bank or a table bank, not by the price, which is a tie. Every code in the table is on the drawer insert list.

A stack of stained fronts, and the one that gets handled most

The front of a drawer bank is a column of three or four fronts, each a five-piece frame with a veneered centre panel under the stain. Fabuwood says colour variation between stained parts is normal, and in a column of fronts you can sometimes see it: one front a shade warmer, a panel whose grain runs busier than the one above. It is the character of a stain, and it is not something an insert changes.

What an insert does change is how often a front gets opened. The divided top drawer becomes the most-pulled front in the room, and the area round its pull is where hand oil builds up first. Fabuwood’s care guidance is simple and suits this finish: mild cleaners only, never spray cleaner directly onto the wood, and blot rather than wipe when something wet lands on it. A cloth dampened with mild soap, then a dry cloth, once a week at the busiest pull, is the whole maintenance plan.

Washing a wood insert without spoiling it

An insert is a removable part, which is its best feature and a temptation. It comes out easily, so people put it in the sink. Do not soak a wood insert or put it in a dishwasher. Water in the joints is what makes a wood tray swell, lift or crack, and a dishwasher is hot water and detergent aimed at exactly those joints.

  • Lift it out and tip the crumbs into the bin; a soft brush gets the corners.
  • Wipe it with a cloth wrung out in warm water and a drop of mild soap. Wring it until it is damp, not wet.
  • Dry it straight away with a clean cloth, then leave it out of the drawer for an hour so the slots dry fully.
  • Wipe the drawer box underneath the same way while the insert is out. The ⅝″ dovetail box has a natural finish and wants the same treatment.
  • Only put cutlery back when it is dry. Wet cutlery straight from the rack is the most common way a tray gets water in its slots.

The same logic applies to the peg board in the bottom drawer, which lives under wet plates more often than anything else. Let the plates dry on the rack before they go down onto the pegs. The care guide covers the rest of the cabinet.

Common questions

What should go in each drawer of a three-drawer base?
Cutlery or utensils in the shallow top drawer, with an insert. Wraps, bags and containers in the middle drawer, usually left open. Pans or plates in the deep bottom drawer, held with a peg insert if they slide. That is general advice; the bank on this finish that it fits best is a 24- or 30-inch three-drawer base.
Is there a peg drawer organizer for a 36-inch drawer?
Not on this list. The peg inserts are GHZ DPS-18/27 at $256.75 and GHZ DPS-30/33 at $302.25, so they stop at 33 inches. If plates in a peg drawer matter, plan that bank at 33 inches or narrower.
What is a four-drawer base cabinet good for?
Dividing. Four shallower tiers suit utensils, knives, cutlery and linens rather than pans. On this finish it comes at 15, 18 and 21 inches (GH DB18-4 is $799.50), and the utensil and knife inserts cover those widths.
How much does it cost to organize a drawer bank?
Fitting one bank completely costs roughly $440 to $700 in inserts on this finish. A 30-inch three-drawer bank with a cutlery insert and a peg insert comes to $1,547.00 all in; a 24-inch one comes to $1,235.00.
Can you put wooden drawer inserts in the dishwasher?
No. Heat, detergent and standing water get into the joints and can make a wood insert swell or crack. Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap, dry it at once, and let it air before it goes back.
Do all the drawer inserts come in every width?
No. Cutlery inserts cover 15 to 36 inches. The utensil insert covers 15 to 24, knife inserts 18 to 24, K-Cup inserts 18 and 21 to 24, and peg inserts 18 to 33. Check the width of the bank against the insert before the bank is drawn.
