Thirty-three or thirty-six: the drawer bank against the combo

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Three inches of bathroom wall costs $6.50 in this collection. That is the entire price difference between the 33-inch sink base and the 36-inch one, and between the two full-height door bases as well — which means anyone weighing these two widths against each other on money is weighing the wrong thing. What actually separates them is that each width carries one special build the other does not, and you cannot have both at either.

Six cabinets across two widths

Three boxes are built at each width, all of them on the standard bath carcass — 21 inches deep, 34 tall. Two of the three are the same at both. The third is not.

The last row is worth noticing on its own. Drawer-over-door — the general-purpose bath cabinet, offered at every width from 12 to 30 — stops at 30. From 33 upward you choose between a plain cupboard and something specialised; there is no middle option left.

What the 33 has that nothing wider does

GN VDB33-34 at $877.50 is the widest all-drawer bath cabinet in the collection, and per inch it is the cheapest of them too — the same build costs $601.25 at twelve inches, which is over $50 for each inch of it, and lands here nearer $26.60. Anyone who has concluded that a bathroom is a room full of small objects and therefore wants stacks rather than shelves ends up at this box.

It is not a vanity, though. The floor is intact, there is no cut-out and nothing has been prepared for a waste, so it stands beside a basin and never under one — which means a wall of 54 inches or more if you want this and a sink cabinet both. Standing alone on a 33-inch wall it becomes the entire storage of a room whose fixture is hung somewhere else, and in a bathroom with a pedestal or wall-mounted basin that is a perfectly ordinary arrangement.

One thing to plan for rather than discover. A bath carcass is 21 inches deep, so the drawer boxes in this one are long relative to their width, and loaded with bottles, tools and the contents of a medicine cabinet they carry real weight a long way out from their fixings. Keep the heavy things low: a dense drawer at the very top of a tall stack pulls the load forward over the toe and makes the whole cabinet feel unsteady even when it is screwed to the wall, which it should be.

What the 36 has instead

The sink-and-drawer combo, GN VSD36DL or GN VSD36DR at $783.25, which puts the bowl to one side and a bank of drawers on the other inside a single carcass. It is the only way to get a basin and real drawers into a wall this narrow, and it is $94.25 less than the 33-inch drawer bank that gives you the drawers and no basin at all.

So the decision reads like this. If the bathroom already has a sink cabinet and needs sorted storage beside it, and the gap is 33 to 35 inches, order the 33-inch drawer bank. If this one cabinet has to be the entire vanity — bowl, counter and storage — and the wall will take 36, order the combo. The $6.50 between the plain boxes is a rounding error; the $94.25 between the two specialised ones buys a completely different bathroom.

Two numbers to take before either goes on the order

Neither of these widths is a retail size — showrooms stack vanities at 24, 30, 36 and 48 — so if your wall lands at 34 or 35 inches you are ahead of most buyers simply by knowing a 33 exists. What you must not do is order to the tape reading. Cabinets need slack to go in and something to scribe against, so work to the opening less an allowance and take up the remainder in filler ordered in the finish on the same sheet.

Take the width twice: once along the front of where the cabinet will stand, once along the back. Bathrooms of any age are seldom parallel, and the gap between those two readings is the reason a top templated off the generous one arrives and will not drop. Give the tighter figure to whoever cuts the counter.

Settle the counter before the cabinet ships, too. A top at either of these widths is made but rarely stocked, so budget for one cut to order rather than collected — and get it confirmed as available, because a vanity standing in a bathroom with nothing to put on it is a bad week.

Common questions

What is the difference between a 33 and a 36 inch vanity?
Six dollars fifty on the plain boxes, and one special build each. The 33 carries the widest all-drawer bath cabinet in the collection at $877.50; the 36 carries the sink-and-drawer combo at $783.25. Neither width has both.
What is the widest all-drawer bathroom cabinet?
GN VDB33-34 at $877.50, 33 inches wide. It is also the best value of the drawer bases per inch of width — around $26.60 an inch against more than $50 for the 12-inch version.
What does a 33 inch vanity cost in this finish?
Two of the three boxes here display at $484.25 — GN VSB33-34 for a basin and GN VB33FD as a cupboard — while GN VDB33-34, the drawer stack, comes to $877.50. Nothing else is built at the width.
Does anyone make a 33 inch vanity with a drawer bank beside the basin?
Not as one carcass in this line. Those combined builds appear at 30, then skip to 36 and upward, so reproducing the effect at 33 means two cabinets and a wall long enough to stand them in.
Can you buy a countertop for an odd vanity width?
Yes, cut to order rather than off a shelf, at 33 inches and equally at 36. Confirm the supplier and lead time before the cabinet ships, and hand them the narrower of your two wall measurements.
