Thirty-three against thirty: what three more inches cost, and what they drop

Thirty-three inches carries the same nine-height ladder as thirty and the same pair of doors, so on a plan the two widths look interchangeable. They are not. The extra three inches costs between nine and fifty-two dollars depending on how tall the box is, and it costs you four whole families that the narrower width carries and this one does not.
The same ladder, priced against its neighbour
Nine heights, matched height for height against the width below. This is the comparison a plan is actually making when it chooses between the two.

Under two feet tall the three inches are close to free. Above that the step is irregular — $19.50 at thirty and thirty-nine inches, $39.00 at thirty-six, $52.00 at forty-two — which is the pattern a price list produces rather than a rule you can reason forward from. Where the wall will take the wider box at a short height, take it. At forty-two inches, check whether the plan genuinely needs the inches.
Four families exist at thirty inches and not here
This is the half of the comparison that never shows up on a price sheet.
- A blind corner. GN WBC3030 is $383.50 at the standard height. There is no blind unit at this width, so a corner run landing on thirty-three has to be redrawn or filled.
- An open box with a matching interior. GN NDW3030 at $461.50 has no counterpart at all here.
- An open shelf unit. GN WOS3030 at $565.50, likewise nothing.
- A glass front. GNK GDW3030 at $201.50 is a part cut for the width below. Glazing is offered at five widths in all, and the list steps straight past this one.
Add the microwave, appliance and lattice units — all built at thirty, none here — and the shape is clear. This is a width for closed storage and for appliance bays, and for nothing else. If any position in a run might later want glass or an open bay, do not put it at thirty-three inches.
Half of this width is twenty-four inches deep
Five boxes here break the twelve-inch plane: GN W331224 at $455.00, W331524 at $461.50, W331824 at $468.00, W332124 at $497.25 and W332424 at $546.00, all twenty-four inches front to back and built to sit above a refrigerator flush with the appliance rather than a foot behind it. That is the job this width mostly exists to do, and the refrigerator wall page carries the family with the argument for the depth.
Two things about them are worth pricing out. Depth costs far more than height: a twelve-inch-deep GN W3315 is $253.50 against $461.50 for the deep box at the same height, while the whole deep ladder spans only $91.00 from shortest to tallest. And the three inches over the thirty-inch deep boxes cost a great deal more here than on the shallow ladder — GN W301524 is $351.00 against $461.50 for the equivalent at this width, $110.50 apart, where the plain boxes at that height are $9.75 apart.
One thing this width has that thirty does not: a twelve-inch-tall deep box. GN W331224 at $455.00 closes a shallow gap above a tall built-in refrigerator, and the deep family at thirty inches wide begins at fifteen inches tall.
Nothing is cut to this width except the cabinet
Check the accessories before an elevation is signed off. The interior puck set GNK LED W33 at $136.50 and the spare adjustable shelf GNK AS-W33 at $46.15 are the only parts cut for the shallow box here; the deep boxes take a shelf of their own, GNK AS-W3324D at $78.00. There is no stemware rail at this width and no tray cabinet; both are built at thirty and thirty-six.
There is no undercabinet light bar at thirty-three either. The bars step 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54 and 60 inches, so a thirty-three-inch run gets lit by the thirty-inch bar with three inches dark at one end, or by running the bars across the whole wall and ignoring the cabinet joints. That is a small thing on its own, and it is the shape of the entire width: everything about thirty-three inches is the cabinet, and everything around the cabinet was drawn for thirty or thirty-six.

- At short heights, yes — the step is $9.75 up to eighteen inches tall. At forty-two inches it is $52.00, and you also give up the blind corner, the open box, the open shelf unit and the glass part, none of which are made at this width.
- Is there a 33 inch glass door cabinet?
- No. Glazing is offered at five widths and this is not one of them: fifteen, eighteen, twenty-four, thirty and thirty-six inches. A run that might one day want a glass front should not be drawn at thirty-three.
- How much is a 33 inch wall cabinet?
- From $243.75 at twelve inches tall to $578.50 at forty-two, at displayed prices on the review date. The twenty-four-inch-deep refrigerator boxes at the same width run $455.00 to $546.00.
- How deep is the cabinet above a refrigerator?
- Twenty-four inches at this width. A shallow box hangs a foot back from the appliance face and leaves a ledge on its top that collects dust and nothing useful; the deep one comes forward to meet it and takes a roasting tin.
- Is there a 33 inch corner or blind wall cabinet?
- No. Blind wall units are built at 24, 30 and 36 inches, and the diagonal and pie-cut corners at 24 and 27. A corner run that lands on thirty-three inches has to be redrawn.
