Galaxy Cobblestone diagonal sink base cabinets: a dark corner that recedes, for better or worse
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
A Fabuwood Galaxy Cobblestone diagonal sink base cabinet puts a dark gray-brown face across the corner at forty-five degrees. GC DSB36 and GC DSB36FD both cost $617.50 and both take 36″ along each wall. A dark angled panel set in the deepest part of the room reads differently from a light one. It recedes, and whether that helps depends on the corner, the light and how much time you spend standing there.
Why a dark corner seems to step back
Light colours advance and dark ones retreat, and a corner is already the part of an L or a U that sits farthest from the eye. Put a near-black door across it and the corner reads as a recess rather than a wall of cabinetry. In an open-plan room that is a real benefit: from the sofa you see the counter and the window, not a big cabinet front. Designers use this effect on purpose to make an L-shaped kitchen feel less boxed in.
The same effect works against you at the sink itself. The corner gets less daylight than either wall, a dark face reflects little of what it does get, and the person washing up is standing in their own shadow. With a white corner cabinet, a single ceiling light is often enough. With this stain, the corner needs light of its own.
| The corner has | What you see from the room | At the sink | Add |
|---|---|---|---|
| A window above the sink | A bright opening with a dark base under it, often the best view in the kitchen | Good by day, dim after dark | A single downlight on the sink for evenings |
| Wall cabinets meeting above it | A dark mass that recedes | Shadowed all day | Under-cabinet strips on both returns, warm white |
| Open shelving above it | Lighter, as the wall shows through | Better than closed uppers | A strip under the lowest shelf |
| Nothing but a ceiling fixture behind you | A clean dark corner | You work in your own shadow | A dedicated pendant or recessed light over the bowl |
Warm white, 2700K to 3000K, keeps the brown undertone in this finish; cool light pushes the corner toward charcoal. Our dark cabinet guide covers lighting for deep finishes in more detail.
DSB36 or DSB36FD: on this stain, decide by what goes inside

GC DSB36 has a false drawer front above its door; GC DSB36FD has one full-height door. On a white or beige corner, the shadow line where the false front meets the door is a strong horizontal, and people choose between the two for how that line carries across the drawer bases on each leg. On this dark stain, the line is faint, so the two versions look far more alike from across the room.
Choose on function instead. The full-height door gives a taller opening, which matters if a water filter tank, a tall bin or a pull-out has to get in past the trap. The false-front version keeps a slightly shorter door, which some people find easier to swing in a tight corner. Both carry the same ½″ veneered plywood box and Blum soft-close hinges, and the depth along the diagonal is well beyond a straight base, so the back of the cavity suits things you rarely need.
One thing to check is the reflection. Because the angled face points into the room, it catches the window at a different angle from the doors on either wall, and on a dark finish any sheen shows as a pale patch. Tape a door sample across the corner at forty-five degrees at the hour you use the sink most, before you settle on the version with the bigger panel.
The corner sink makes a splash pocket
At a straight sink, splashes land on the counter and the door in front of you. At a corner sink you stand in an inside angle, so water also reaches the doors on both returns, often the first door on each leg. On a light cabinet those drips dry invisibly. On this dark stain they dry as pale spots, most visibly on the bottom rails and the toe kick.
- Keep a towel bar or hook on the diagonal door itself; a wet towel draped over a neighbouring door leaves marks on that door.
- Wipe the two return doors dry along with the corner face; three doors, not one.
- Line the floor of the corner box. The under-sink mat in this finish ($156.00) is sold for sink bases; ask your designer whether it suits the diagonal floor or needs trimming.
- Choose a knob rather than a long bar pull for the angled door. It swings past the fronts on both legs, and a long pull will hit them.
Where the dishwasher goes on a dark L
The dishwasher cannot sit tight against the corner cabinet, because its open door lands exactly where you stand at the sink. The usual answer is one cabinet along: the corner base, then a drawer base, then the dishwasher. In a dark kitchen, a stainless dishwasher next to this finish is a strong vertical break in the run. If you would rather the run read as one piece, a panel-ready dishwasher is the route; no dishwasher panel is listed in this finish, so ask your designer how to face one to match.
The alternative is to leave the sink on a straight wall and give the corner to storage: a lazy Susan in this finish is $1,030.25 for the 33″ and $1,095.25 for the 36″. Our kitchen layouts guide shows which shapes actually benefit from a corner sink.
Not the corner part you meant?
The complete box on this page is not the same as the diagonal sink front, which is only the angled face ($149.50) for a corner cavity an installer builds between two runs. If the sink ends up on a straight wall, a sink base from $386.75 is the box; an apron sink needs the farm sink cabinet. The rest of the kitchen is in the Cobblestone collection, and a free 3D design can show both layouts, with the lighting, before you commit.
Common questions
- Do dark corner cabinets make a kitchen look smaller?
- Usually the opposite. A dark face in the corner recedes, so the L or U reads as less enclosed, especially from an open living area. The cost is light at the sink itself, so plan task lighting over the bowl.
- What is the difference between DSB36 and DSB36FD?
- DSB36 has a false drawer front above the door; DSB36FD has a single full-height door with a taller opening for a filter tank or tall bin. Both are $617.50. On this dark finish the visual difference is small, so choose by what needs to fit inside.
- How should I light a dark corner sink?
- Give it its own light. Warm-white under-cabinet strips on both returns if there are wall cabinets above, or a pendant or recessed light over the bowl if there are not. Warm light, 2700K to 3000K, keeps the brown undertone visible.
- Why do water spots show on the doors next to a corner sink?
- At a corner sink you stand in an inside angle, so splashes reach the doors on both legs, not just the one in front of you. On a dark stain those dry pale. Wiping the two return doors along with the corner face solves most of it.
- Can a dishwasher go next to a corner sink base?
- Yes, but put a drawer base between them so the open dishwasher door does not block you at the sink. A panel-ready dishwasher keeps a dark run looking continuous, but no dishwasher panel is listed in this finish, so ask your designer how to face one.
- How much is a Cobblestone corner sink cabinet?
- $617.50 for either GC DSB36 or GC DSB36FD, shipped assembled with Blum soft-close hinges. The diagonal sink front, at $149.50, is only the face for a site-built corner, not a cabinet.
