Galaxy Cobblestone drawer bench seat cabinets: hardware, heels and a dark bench in a bright nook
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
A Galaxy Cobblestone drawer bench seat cabinet is the one cabinet you look at from a chair, at eye level, across a table. GC DBS24, DBS30 and DBS36 are $338.00, $383.50 and $425.75, each 16⅜″ high with an open top for a seat panel and one drawer below. In this dark gray-brown stain they read as furniture rather than cabinetry. The choices that make that work are the knob on the drawer and what the bench stands against.
Brass, nickel or black: what shows on a dark drawer front
On a white bench almost any metal is visible. On this finish the hardware either stands out or nearly disappears, and at a bench it is the only detail on a plain front. Before choosing, hold the pull against the Cobblestone door sample ($25):
| Metal | On this finish | Best used when |
|---|---|---|
| Polished or unlacquered brass | Stands out strongly; warms the brown in the stain | The bench is meant to be a feature |
| Champagne or satin brass | Clearly visible but softer | You want warmth without shine |
| Satin nickel or stainless | Visible, cool and quiet | The kitchen already has stainless appliances |
| Matte black | Almost disappears | You want a plain, handle-free look |
| Oil-rubbed bronze | Disappears, and adds more brown to brown | Rarely; it flattens the front |
Warm metals do the most here, because they pick up the brown in the stain. A single brass knob centred on a drawer front makes a bench look like furniture. Matte black is not wrong, but it hides the drawer, and on a bench a drawer that nobody notices tends to go unused. For more pairings, see the dark cabinet style guide.
Where a bench gets kicked, and what the stain does about it
People sit on a bench with their heels against the front, slide along it and push it with their knees when they stand up. Children climb it. That is more contact than any kitchen base gets. The grain in the stain hides the fine scuffs a shoe leaves better than a flat paint would. A sharp knock that chips through to bare wood leaves a pale mark, and pale dust, crumbs and pet hair show along the toe kick.
Two things help. Set the seat panel far enough forward that the drawer front is recessed under it, so heels land on the toe kick more than on the drawer. And keep the touch-up kit, GCB-TOUCH-UP-KIT at $62.40, in the drawer itself; a bench is where it is most likely to be needed. Each drawer is a ⅝″ dovetailed box on Blum full-extension soft-close glides, the same as the kitchen drawers, and the dovetail drawer guide explains why that matters under a seat.
A dark bench in a bright nook
A dark bench looks best against light surroundings. Against a pale wall, under a window, with a light cushion and a light table top, it anchors the nook without closing it in. Put it in a dim corner against a dark wall and it disappears, taking the drawer with it. Light cushion colours such as oatmeal, cream, soft green or a light stripe stand out against the stain, and a pale fabric is easier to keep looking clean on a bench than a dark one.
For sizes, allow about 24″ of bench per adult. Two 36s ($851.50) seat three adults, and build a longer run mostly from 36s, using a 24 or 30 to make up the length. For height, aim for a finished seat of about 18″ to 19″ under a 30″ table, so the seat panel and compressed cushion add about 2″ to the 16⅜″ box. The listing gives width and height only, so confirm the depth with your designer before the cushions are made.
Carcass-only boxes and the rest of the nook
Each width is also listed as a carcass-only loose part, GCB-DBS24-BO at $217.75, GCB-DBS30-BO at $247.00 and GCB-DBS36-BO at $273.00, for a bench that will get a paneled or upholstered front built on site. Ask your designer what ships with it. If the nook has an exposed end, finish it with an end skin from decorative accessories. The rest of the line is on the Galaxy Cobblestone collection page.
Common questions
- What hardware looks best on dark cabinets?
- Warm metals such as polished, unlacquered or champagne brass stand out the most and bring out the brown in a gray-brown stain. Satin nickel is visible but quieter. Matte black and oil-rubbed bronze almost disappear on a finish this dark.
- Does black hardware work on dark brown or gray cabinets?
- It works if you want the hardware to disappear. On a near-black gray-brown front it reads as almost no hardware at all. On a bench that tends to hide the drawer, so a warm metal is usually the better choice there.
- How much does a drawer bench seat cabinet cost?
- $338.00 for the 24″, $383.50 for the 30″ and $425.75 for the 36″ in this finish. Each is 16⅜″ high with one drawer and an open top for a seat panel.
- Will a dark bench show scuffs from shoes?
- Fine scuffs tend to hide in the grain. Chips through to bare wood show as pale marks, and pale dust and pet hair show along the toe kick. Setting the seat panel forward so the drawer front is recessed helps, and the touch-up kit is $62.40.
- How tall should a kitchen bench seat be?
- About 18″ to 19″ with someone sitting on it, under a 30″ table. The box is 16⅜″, so the seat panel and a firm cushion together should add about 2″.
