Galaxy Cobblestone sink base cabinets: what the wettest box in the kitchen shows on a dark door
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
A Fabuwood Galaxy Cobblestone sink base cabinet takes more water, more soap and more wiping than any other box you will buy, and it does it in a dark gray-brown stain with the grain running through it. Ten versions from 21″ to 42″, $386.75 to $572.00, all on the standard 34½″ by 24″ base footprint. Before choosing a width, it is worth knowing what a door this dark will and will not show at the sink, because that is the thing owners notice in the first month.
Do dark cabinets show water spots? At the sink, in three specific places

Owners of white kitchens complain about the grime around the pulls. Owners of dark ones almost never do, because skin oil and the grey film from hands blend into a near-black gray-brown. The complaint moves somewhere else: to anything that dries pale. Hard-water rings, soap residue, a dusting of flour and the chalky streak a sponge leaves when it is wrung out over the door all turn up lighter than the finish, and on a sink base they collect in predictable spots.
Knowing the spots is most of the battle. The table maps them from the counter edge down to the floor.
| Zone on the cabinet | What lands there | On this dark stain | The habit that fixes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top rail of the false front, just under the counter lip | Drips running off the counter edge | Shows as pale beads once dry | A dry towel over the rail, not a wet one |
| Door faces at hand height | Hand oil, grime near the pulls | Mostly disappears | Nothing beyond the weekly wipe |
| Bottom rails of the doors | Splashes from the dishwasher and rinsing | Shows water rings in hard-water areas | Wipe dry after unloading; a softener helps |
| Toe kick | Mop water, pet bowls, flour from above | Flour and dried mop lines show plainly | A damp microfibre pass, then dry |
| Inside the bay | Leaks and bottle rings | The interior is natural wood veneer, lighter than the door, so a stain inside is easy to spot | A mat or tray on the deck before anything else |
The grain is the underrated part. A flat opaque colour this dark would show every wipe mark as a smear; a stain lets the wood figure break the surface up, so a slightly uneven wipe reads as grain rather than a streak. Wipe along the stiles and rails the way the grain runs, not in circles, and the finish looks the same the next morning. Our dark cabinet care notes cover the products that leave no residue on a deep finish.
Ten versions of one box, and the sink each suits
The widths are the same grid every Galaxy finish shares, and the rule for reading it is the same: the bowl needs a few inches less than the nominal width, because the side panels and the face frame both eat into the opening. A sink maker's template held against the frame opening is the final word.
| Usual sink | SKU | Price today |
|---|---|---|
| Bar or prep bowl | GC SB21 / GC SB24 | $386.75 / $403.00 |
| 24″ single bowl, compact kitchen | GC SB27 | $442.00 |
| 27″ single bowl | GC SB30 | $461.50 |
| 30″ single bowl, or a 27″ with a disposal | GC SB33 or GC SB33SDF | $468.00 |
| 33″ single or a small double | GC SB36 or GC SB36SDF | $490.75 |
| 36″ double bowl | GC SB39 | $526.50 |
| Large double, workstation sink | GC SB42 | $572.00 |
The SDF pair costs exactly what the split version costs and differs only in the false front: one continuous panel across the top instead of two. On a light door the rail between two panels is an obvious line; on this stain it is a faint shadow, so the choice matters less here than it does in white. Pick SDF when the neighbouring cabinet is a three-drawer base whose single top drawer it should line up with. Every width arrives assembled with Blum soft-close hinges already hung, and a bathroom sink wants the shallower vanity bases instead.
Three inserts sold in this finish for the space under the sink
Most sink bases leave the owner to find organisers elsewhere. This line carries three that belong in this box, all listed in the GC finish on the cabinet accessories page:
- Tilt-out trays in 11″, 14″ and 24″ lengths (GC TILTOUT 11, 14 and 24), $162.50 each. They hinge the false front forward to make a shallow sponge-and-brush tray out of the panel that otherwise does nothing. The length follows the width of the false front; confirm which one your box takes with your designer before ordering.
- The under-sink mat (GC UNDER SINK MAT), $156.00. A liner for the cabinet floor, so a slow drip sits on top of it where you can see it rather than soaking into the veneer. Ask your designer which widths it is cut for.
- Any pull-out bin or door-mounted rack from the same page, as long as it clears the trap. If a bin is on the plan, it usually means a 36″ box or wider; our guide to Fabuwood trash and pull-out accessories compares the options.
Put the mat in on install day, before the first bottle of dish soap. A pale water ring on the natural interior is harmless; the same ring left for a year is the start of the swollen deck every plumber has seen.
Counter and light: a dark box needs both working for it
A dark base run pulls the eye down and swallows light, which is why most kitchens that use this colour pair it with a light counter. At the sink that pairing does two jobs. A white or cream quartz, a pale marble-look or a light butcher block bounces window light back down onto the doors, so the run reads as a deep brown-gray rather than a black hole under the counter; and the contrast makes the counter edge a crisp line, which is exactly where you want the eye to stop.
A dark counter on a dark sink base is a legitimate look, but it needs light under the wall cabinets or a big window, or the sink becomes the dimmest workstation in the room. Warm-white under-cabinet strips, around 2700K to 3000K, bring the brown undertone forward; cool 4000K strips push it toward charcoal. Hardware follows the same logic: brass or champagne pulls on the false front read clearly against this stain, while matte black pulls all but disappear, which some people want and others regret. Tape the door sample under the sink window with your counter chip beside it before deciding either.
Scratches, chips and the touch-up kit on a stained finish

The sink base takes knocks from pot handles, stools and the vacuum. On a stained door, a light scuff tends to be absorbed by the grain pattern, which is the real advantage over a painted door this dark. A chip that goes through to bare wood is different: raw wood is pale, so it shows as a bright fleck against the gray-brown, usually on the bottom rail or the door edge.
For those, the finish has its own touch-up kit on the loose parts page (GCB-TOUCH-UP-KIT, $62.40). Buy it with the cabinets rather than after the first chip, so you have it when you need it. A marker from the hardware store will be the wrong brown or the wrong gray. For anything bigger than a fleck, a single replacement box is the fix: this is a stocked catalog finish, so a new GC sink base will match the rest of the kitchen. The cabinet care guide covers cleaners that are safe on a stained surface.
Other sinks, other boxes
An apron-front sink needs the farm sink cabinet, $806.00 to $825.50, because its front is cut down for the sink face. A sink turned into a corner needs the complete diagonal sink base at $617.50, or the diagonal sink front at $149.50 if an installer is building the corner cavity on site. Everything on either side of the sink is under base cabinets, and the full room is in the Cobblestone collection. If the plan is still loose, a free 3D design comes back in 3–5 business days.
Common questions
- Do dark cabinets show water spots and fingerprints?
- Fingerprints and grime around the pulls mostly vanish on a dark gray-brown. Water spots, soap residue and flour are the opposite: they dry pale and show. On a sink base they gather on the top rail under the counter edge, on the bottom rails and on the toe kick, so those are the three places to wipe dry.
- Is Galaxy Cobblestone painted or stained?
- Stained. It is a dark gray-brown with the wood grain visible through it, not a flat opaque paint, and not pure black. Fabuwood describes it as a cross between traditional brown and transitional dark grey. Order a door sample to see the grain and the undertone in your own light.
- What size sink base do I need for a 33 inch sink?
- A 36″ box: GC SB36 or the single-panel GC SB36SDF, $490.75 either way. The opening is a few inches narrower than the nominal width, so check the sink template against the face frame before ordering.
- What countertop goes with dark brown shaker cabinets at the sink?
- A light one works hardest: white or cream quartz, a pale marble-look or light butcher block reflects window light back onto the doors and gives a crisp edge line. A dark counter is possible, but plan strong under-cabinet lighting so the sink does not become the dimmest spot in the room.
- Are there organisers made for this sink base?
- Yes. Tilt-out trays in 11″, 14″ and 24″ lengths are $162.50 each, and an under-sink mat is $156.00, all in the Cobblestone listing. Confirm with your designer which tray length and mat size suit the width you order.
- How do I fix a chip on a Cobblestone cabinet?
- Use the finish-specific touch-up kit, GCB-TOUCH-UP-KIT at $62.40, rather than a generic marker. A chip that reaches bare wood shows as a pale fleck, and only a matched stain hides it properly. For larger damage, a replacement box matches because this is a stocked catalog finish.
