One tall dark door, nothing above it: choosing and placing the hardware

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Prices quoted in this article were read off the grid on the review date; the live price grid on this page governs.

Take the drawer away and a narrow base is a single tall panel with one piece of metal on it. On Galaxy Cobblestone full height single door base cabinets — 9″ to 21″ wide, no drawer, one door the full height of the face — that piece of metal is the most visible decision on the box, because a near-black gray-brown stain makes some finishes glow and swallows others entirely.

What hardware goes with dark cabinets, finish by finish

Hardware is not part of a Fabuwood cabinet order — the catalog lists no knobs or pulls — so this is a choice you make and buy separately. It is also the choice that changes most between a pale kitchen and a dark one. On a light door almost any metal shows; on this finish only the lighter and warmer ones do.

  • Brass and champagne bronze: the strongest pairing. The warm metal picks up the brown undertone in the stain and stands out clearly against the depth, which is why it is the combination most dark kitchens are photographed with.
  • Polished or satin nickel: crisp and cooler. It reads well, pulls the finish toward its gray side, and suits a kitchen with white uppers and stainless appliances.
  • Stainless bar pulls: similar to nickel but more industrial; good if they match the appliance handles nearby.
  • Oil-rubbed bronze: close in value to the stain, so it reads as a quiet texture rather than an accent. Fine if you want the hardware to be felt more than seen.
  • Matte black: nearly invisible. On a dark stain it disappears into the door, which some people choose deliberately for a hardware-free look — but on a tall single door it also means the grip point is hard to find at a glance.

Where the pull goes on a door with no drawer above it

On a base door under a drawer, the pull sits near the top of the door and the question barely arises. With the drawer gone, the door runs the whole face of the box below the counter, and the grip belongs where a hand arrives without bending: near the top corner on the opening side, a couple of inches down from the top rail.

Mount it vertically. A vertical pull reads as part of the tall door and gives a hand the same reach whether you are standing or crouching. On the 9″ box a knob is the only thing that fits comfortably on the narrow stile; from 12″ up a 4″ to 6″ pull is proportionate, and on 18″ and 21″ doors a longer pull works if it matches the others in the run. Keep the same distance from the top rail on every full-height door so the hardware forms a line along the run — on a dark finish that line of metal is the thing the eye follows.

One more reason to choose the grip carefully: whatever you touch leaves a mark on the metal, not the stain. Hands go to the pull instead of the edge of the door, and the edge is where fingerprints would otherwise gather. Here the choice of hardware is also a cleaning decision.

The pull-out behind the door, and the grip it needs

The main reason to choose a drawerless base is that it can take a pull-out running the full height of the opening. A door-mounted pull-out is heavier to open than a plain door, so the grip matters more: a knob on a loaded 9″ spice pull-out is a pinch, while a pull gives the whole hand something to hold. The table lists what the catalog offers at each width.

12″GC B12FD · $328.25Base pull-outs from $919.75 (GC SPO-B12 BLUM)4″–5″ vertical pull

21″GC B21FD · $399.75Trash pull-out $809.25, or a roll-out tray $204.75A longer pull, matched to the run

The 9″ and 12″ units come in several versions at different prices, and the catalog titles do not describe how they differ, so ask your designer which one you are getting. The trash units have a standard and a full-height-door version at the same price; for these boxes, order the FHD one. Everything is on the cabinet accessories page, with the organizers on the pull-out organizer page and the bins on the trash pull-out page.

Grain that differs from door to door

Because Cobblestone is a stain rather than a solid colour, the wood figure shows through it, and no two doors have the same figure. On a wide drawer bank the variation is spread across many small fronts and barely registers. On a tall single door it is one uninterrupted piece of grain, and two of them side by side — a pair flanking the range, say — can show noticeably different patterns and slightly different depth of colour.

That is the nature of a stained finish, and most people who choose it want exactly that. It is still worth seeing before you order. The door sample ($35.00) shows one door’s figure; ask your designer whether they have photos of a finished run so you can see how the variation looks across several doors. And place the order for a run at once rather than adding boxes months later, when matching the figure and depth of an existing run is harder.

The shallow version, and what arrives

Every width also comes 12″ deep, for runs that need to sit flush with wall cabinets: GC B09FD-12D at $266.50, GC B12FD-12D at $321.75, GC B15FD-12D at $331.50, GC B18FD-12D at $364.00 and GC B21FD-12D at $390.00. The hardware logic above applies to them unchanged, and on a shallow run a matching pull on every door keeps the line of metal continuous from floor cabinet to wall cabinet.

All of these ship pre-assembled, with a ½″ veneered plywood box, a natural wood veneer interior, and doors on Blum Quick-Release soft-close hinges; lead time is typically two weeks. Spare adjustable shelves are listed separately by width (for example AS-B15 at $38.35), but the number included in each box is not published, so confirm it with your designer. For the same widths with a drawer on top, see the single door bases; for 24″ and wider without a drawer, the two-door full-height page. The Galaxy Cobblestone collection has the rest of the finish, and the wall cabinets take the same hardware above.

Common questions

What color hardware goes with dark brown cabinets?
Brass and champagne bronze stand out most and pick up the brown in the stain. Polished or satin nickel reads crisper and cooler. Oil-rubbed bronze is subtle, and matte black almost disappears on a dark finish.
Does black hardware work on dark cabinets?
It can, if you want the hardware to vanish. On a near-black stain like Cobblestone, matte black pulls blend into the door; that suits a minimal look but makes the grip harder to spot.
Where should the pull go on a full-height base cabinet door?
Near the top corner on the opening side, mounted vertically, a couple of inches below the top rail. Keep the same height on every full-height door in the run so the pulls line up.
Does Fabuwood include knobs and pulls?
No. The Galaxy Cobblestone catalog lists no knobs or pulls, so hardware is bought separately and drilled on site. Have it ready before install day.
Which trash pull-out fits a 15 inch full-height door base?
GC TC15FHD BLUM, the full-height-door version, at $617.50. The standard version at the same price is for a box that keeps its top drawer.
Do stained cabinet doors all look the same?
No. The grain shows through a stain, so each door has its own figure and slight variation in depth of colour. It is most visible on tall single doors. Order a run at once and look at the door sample first.
