Galaxy Indigo farm sink cabinets: which white the apron should answer to

Galaxy Indigo farm sink cabinets come in three widths, GI FS30, FS33 and FS36, priced $806.00 to $825.50, on the standard 34½″-high, 24″-deep base footprint. Put a white fireclay apron into one and you have added a large white rectangle to the middle of a navy run, at the height everyone looks. That rectangle is a second white in the room, and the question this page is built around is what it should agree with.
A white apron in a navy run needs a partner

On a white or off-white cabinet the apron almost blends in, and the only risk is two whites that are nearly but not quite the same. On a navy box every white is visible and in high contrast, so the eye compares them immediately: the fireclay, the counter, the upper cabinets, the subway tile, the ceiling. Two whites that match look planned. Three different whites around one sink look like three separate purchases.
Pick one of these as the reference, and choose the sink to match it:
| Match the apron to | How it reads | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| The countertop | Apron and counter read as one continuous white slab wrapping over the navy. The most common and the safest | A counter with heavy gray veining next to a flat white apron; bring both samples together |
| Frost uppers or perimeter | A bright, crisp navy-and-white room | A very blue-white fireclay beside a warm counter |
| Dove or Linen uppers | A softer, warmer room; the navy looks less formal | A stark white apron that makes the warmer cabinets look dingy |
| Nothing: a stainless or copper apron | The sink stops being a white shape at all. Stainless ties to appliances; copper leans toward brass hardware | Stainless can look cold against navy under cool bulbs; copper will patina |
The counter match is the one we suggest first, because the counter is the white you see most of and the apron sits directly under it. If you are building a two-tone kitchen, compare the whites themselves in our Frost versus Dove comparison before deciding which one the room will lean on.
Keeping navy and white from looking nautical
The worry we hear most about a blue kitchen with a white farmhouse sink is that it will look like a boat. That happens when every element is pure: a bright marine blue, a stark white, chrome everywhere and nothing warm to break it up. Indigo already avoids the first of those, because it is a greyed, dusky navy rather than a saturated one. The rest is up to the room.
- Bring in wood. White oak open shelves, an oak floor or a butcher-block island top is the fastest way to make navy and white feel like a kitchen.
- Warm the metal. Brass or champagne bronze on the faucet and pulls does more against navy than any other single change.
- Use a warm white somewhere. Dove or Linen uppers, or a warm-white counter, soften the contrast without losing it.
- Skip the theme. Stripes, rope pulls and anchor accessories do the rest of the damage on their own.
Seen together on a door sample and a counter chip, it is usually obvious within a minute whether the pairing leans calm or coastal.
Three apron boxes, and the sink that goes in each
The standard pairings are a 27″ apron sink in GI FS30 at $806.00, a 30″ sink in GI FS33 at $815.75 and a 33″ sink in GI FS36 at $825.50. The outside width on the sink maker's drawing is what decides it, not the nominal size on the box, so send us the drawing. The same drawing carries the apron height, and the listing does not publish the height of the cabinet opening, so that is a detail to confirm with your designer before the order goes in.
The loose parts page also lists carcass-only versions in this finish: GIN-FS30-BO at $565.50, GIN-FS33-BO at $572.00 and GIN-FS36-BO at $578.50. Ask your designer exactly what those cartons contain before choosing one; for most kitchens the complete cabinet is the part to order. Compared with a standard sink base at $386.75 to $572.00, the premium pays for the dropped front and the support the sink rests on. The door, the ½″ veneered plywood box and the Blum hinges are the same.
Two limits are worth knowing before you fall for a particular sink. There is no apron box wider than 36″ in Galaxy, so a large double-bowl apron sink of 36″ or more across the outside has nowhere to go in this line; a 33″ double fits the GI FS36 and that is the ceiling. And because the apron replaces the false front, there is no panel above the doors to carry a pull, so the hardware line along the navy run breaks at the sink. That break is normal, and the apron becomes the feature in its place.
Under a warm bulb the white stays white and the navy does not
Contrast between navy and white changes through the day in a way it does not between two neutrals. In daylight the apron and the door are simply light and dark. Under a very warm evening bulb, fireclay keeps reading as white while the navy loses its blue and drifts toward a muddy, slightly violet dark. The contrast gets harsher at exactly the time the kitchen is used most.
The fix is ordinary: under-cabinet strips and a pendant over the sink at 3000K to 3500K keep the paint reading blue after dark. Put the apron sample and a door sample next to each other under the fixture you are buying and look at them at night as well as at midday. Our guide to ordering and judging samples covers the rest of that test.
If the apron sink is not the one you end up choosing
An undermount or drop-in bowl on a straight wall goes in a standard sink base, 21″ to 42″ wide in this navy. A sink in the corner uses the complete diagonal sink base at $617.50, or the diagonal sink front when an installer is building the cavity on site; neither comes in an apron version. The rest of the room, including the whites that suit Indigo, is in the Galaxy Indigo collection.
Common questions
- Does a white farmhouse sink go with navy cabinets?
- Yes, and it is one of the most common pairings for navy. It works best when the apron's white matches something else nearby, usually the countertop or the upper cabinets, so the room has one white rather than three.
- Will navy cabinets and a white sink look nautical?
- Only if everything in the room is pure blue, pure white and chrome. Indigo is a greyed navy, which helps. Add wood (oak shelves, floor or an island top), warm metal such as brass, and a warm white somewhere, and it reads as a kitchen rather than a boat.
- Should a farmhouse sink match the countertop or the cabinets?
- With navy cabinets, match the countertop. The apron sits directly under the counter, so a close white match makes them read as one piece. Matching the upper cabinets also works in a two-tone kitchen if the counter is a similar white.
- What size Indigo farm sink cabinet do I need for a 30 inch apron sink?
- GI FS33 at $815.75. The cabinet wants about three inches more than the sink's outside width. Send the sink drawing so the outside width and apron height can be confirmed before ordering.
- What are the carcass-only farm sink listings?
- Loose-parts listings in the Indigo finish: GIN-FS30-BO at $565.50, GIN-FS33-BO at $572.00 and GIN-FS36-BO at $578.50. Ask your designer what each carton contains before ordering one; most kitchens need the complete cabinet.
- What lighting works best with navy cabinets and a white sink?
- Under-cabinet and pendant lighting at 3000K to 3500K. Very warm 2700K light makes navy look muddy or slightly violet while the white sink stays bright, so the contrast looks harsh in the evening.
