Where the blue stops: narrow one-door bases at the edge of a navy run

A white kitchen has no edges worth talking about. A navy one does, and they are almost always made by a narrow box. Galaxy Indigo single door base cabinets — one door under one soft-close drawer, 12 to 21 inches wide — are the pieces a plan uses to close a run beside the range, the dishwasher or the pantry tower, which makes each of them the place where a dusky blue meets something that is not blue. This page is about getting that meeting right.
Why the narrow box ends up at the colour break
Wide cabinets fill the middle of a wall. The leftover inches at the ends — beside an appliance, against a tall unit, at a return where the counter stops — are where the 12″, 15″, 18″ and 21″ widths go, because nothing wider fits. So when a kitchen is navy below and something paler above or beside, the last navy piece a visitor sees on each run is very often one of these.
That is a harder job than it sounds. The box has to show a finished side if the run ends in open floor, carry a toe kick that stops cleanly, and sit beside a neighbour of a different colour without the join looking accidental. Every one of those is a part or an order note, not a property of the cabinet, and all of them are cheaper to settle now than to fix at install.
Four places a navy run can end, and which reads as planned

Colour changes look deliberate when they happen at something solid, and improvised when they happen in the middle of a flat run. In practice there are four good places for a blue lower run to stop, and one bad one.
- At an appliance. A refrigerator, a range or a dishwasher is a full stop in steel or glass, and the eye accepts a change on the far side of it. This is the cleanest break a kitchen has, and the reason stainless and navy are such an easy pair.
- At a tall cabinet. A pantry or oven tower in white beside a navy base gives a vertical line the full height of the room. Keep the tall a genuinely different value — Frost or Dove, not a mid-gray — so the step reads as a choice.
- At an inside corner. Letting the blue turn the corner and stop at the next wall keeps the lower band continuous; stopping it exactly at the corner also works, because the corner itself is the line.
- At an open end. A run that finishes in open floor ends on a finished side, and that side is the most-seen square foot of navy in the room. It needs an end panel, and the next section prices it.
- The one to avoid: a colour change halfway along a straight counter, between two boxes of equal height. It reads as a mistake or a phased install. If the plan does that, move the break to the nearest appliance or tall unit, and ask our design service to redraw it before anything is ordered.
The paint-matched parts that finish an exposed end
A base cabinet’s own side is not the face you want on show at the end of a run. The catalog sells the parts that cover and close an exposed end in the same Indigo paint, and on a saturated colour they matter more than on a white, because a raw edge or an off-colour filler is visible from across the room.
| Part | SKU | Our price | What it does at the edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base end panel | GI BEP | $149.50 | A finished face over the exposed side of the last box |
| 3″ base filler | GI BF3 | $26.00 | Closes a small gap against a wall that is not square |
| 6″ base filler | GI BF6 | $43.55 | Takes up a wider leftover beside an appliance or wall |
| Toe kick, 8 ft | GI TK8 | $55.90 | The recessed strip under the boxes, in the same navy |
| Toe kick, ¾″, 8 ft | GI TK8-3/4 | $58.50 | The thicker version; your designer picks which one the run needs |
| Toe kick cap | GI TKC | $7.80 | A small part sold with the kick; ask your designer where the run needs it |
A GI B15 at $377.00 with an end panel comes to $526.50 before the kick. Two things to write on the order. First, which side is exposed: the panel goes on one side only, and a box at the open end of an island or peninsula may want two. Second, the toe kick colour: keep it navy under a navy run. A white or wood kick under blue boxes makes the cabinets look lifted off the floor, which is a look, but rarely the intended one. The parts are on the side panel page and the decorative accessories page; the end panels and fillers guide explains where each one goes.
Do navy cabinets show chips? At the corners, yes
An opaque paint covers the substrate completely, which is what makes Indigo a flat, even blue with no grain. The flip side is that a knock deep enough to break the paint shows the lighter layer underneath as a pale fleck, and on a dark, saturated colour a fleck the size of a grain of rice is visible. The spots it happens are predictable: the outside corner of the last box in a run, the bottom edge of a door that meets a vacuum or a mop, and the drawer-front edge beside the dishwasher where a rack gets pulled out at an angle.
Fingerprints are the good news. A mid-dark blue hides a smudge of hand oil better than a white door, where the same mark shows as a gray shadow. What navy shows instead is dust — a pale film on the horizontal top edge of the drawer front and on the bottom rail of the door — and water spots that dry lighter than the paint. A dry microfiber cloth handles the dust; a damp one followed by a dry one handles the spots. The cabinet care guide has the routine and the cleaners to avoid, and the matte finishes guide covers why low-sheen paint wants a soft cloth rather than a scrubbing pad.
Twelve to 21 inches of navy: widths, prices and the edge each suits
All four are the plain B cabinet: drawer above, one door below. The last column is the edge each width most often ends up closing.
| Width | SKU | Fabuwood list | Our price | The edge it usually closes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12″ | GI B12 | $560.00 | $364.00 | Beside the range, where a tray or oil bottles live |
| 15″ | GI B15 | $580.00 | $377.00 | The open end of a run, with an end panel on the show side |
| 18″ | GI B18 | $630.00 | $409.50 | Against a white pantry tower, where the colour changes |
| 21″ | GI B21 | $665.00 | $432.25 | The dishwasher side of the sink, before the corner |
Our column is 35% under list as read on the review date; the grid above is current. The hinge side is not in the part number, so write it on the order: at an edge, the door should open away from the neighbour, not into it. One comparison worth making at every width: Indigo also comes as a drawer base at 12″ through 21″ (GI DB18 is $646.75, for example), so the single door box is the $237.25-cheaper choice at 18″ when one drawer is enough. The drawer inserts page has the cutlery trays that fit the top drawer.
Narrower than 12″, or without the drawer, is the full-height single door page. At 24″ and up the plain B takes two doors, on the double door page. A bin behind the door is on the trash pull-out page, and sinks and working positions belong to the sink bases and the drawer banks. The whole navy finish, toe kick to crown, is on the Galaxy Indigo collection page.
Common questions
- Where should navy cabinets stop in a two-tone kitchen?
- At something solid: an appliance, a tall cabinet, an inside corner or the open end of a run. A colour change in the middle of a straight counter, between two boxes of the same height, is the one break that tends to look like a mistake.
- What finishes the exposed side of a navy base cabinet?
- A base end panel in the same paint — GI BEP, $149.50 in Indigo. Fillers (GI BF3 at $26.00, GI BF6 at $43.55) close gaps against walls and appliances, and the toe kick comes in the same navy in 8-foot lengths.
- Do navy blue cabinets show chips and dust?
- A chip through the paint shows as a pale fleck, most often at outside corners and door bottoms. Dust shows on horizontal edges. Fingerprints show less than on white. The catalog lists an Indigo touch-up kit at $62.40; confirm with your designer what it contains.
- Should the toe kick match navy base cabinets?
- Usually, yes. A navy kick under navy boxes keeps the base reading as one solid piece. A contrasting kick makes the cabinets look raised off the floor, which is a furniture look some people want but most do not intend.
- Is Galaxy Indigo navy, black or purple?
- Navy — a muted, grayed slate navy, darker than a royal blue and clearly lighter than Galaxy Pitch Black. Fabuwood mentions violet undertones, and under very warm light it can lean slightly violet. Judge it from the $35.00 door sample in your own room.
- How much is a 15 inch navy base cabinet with a drawer?
- GI B15 shows at $377.00 against a Fabuwood list of $580.00. It is 34½″ high and 24″ deep, pre-assembled, with one soft-close door and a dovetailed soft-close drawer.
