One corner, two lights: living with a Galaxy Horizon blind wall cabinet

A blind wall cabinet is the box that turns an upper run around an inside corner: part of it sits hidden behind the run on the other wall, and part of it shows a door. Most of what can be said about it is mechanical, and that is covered well elsewhere. This page is about two things that are particular to Galaxy Horizon at a corner. The first is light: the corner is the one place in the kitchen where the same finish hangs on two walls that face different ways, and a stain Fabuwood itself calls adaptable will show that. The second is the dead end behind the door, and a plan for what to keep there so it earns its space.

Why the same stain can look like two colours at the corner

Illustration of an L-shaped kitchen with light wood shaker cabinets, a window over the sink on one wall and the range on the other
Drawn in a light wood finish. In an L, the window lights one wall face-on and the return wall from the side; the corner is where those two lights meet on the same cabinets.

Walk into an L-shaped kitchen with a window on one wall and look at the corner. The window wall faces you with its light coming from behind or beside you. The return wall catches the window light at a steep angle, across its face. A cabinet on each wall is receiving a different amount and direction of light, and each face frame is a surface with grain in it. On a flat paint the difference shows as a slightly lighter and slightly darker version of the same colour. On a stain it can show as something more like two readings: grain picking up raking light on one wall and lying flat on the other.

This finish is more prone to it than most. Fabuwood’s hex value for it is #989089, a warm grey-taupe, and its own copy describes it three ways — soft pink undertones on the door page, soft taupe on a design card, misty greys with silvery undertones on the finish page. A Houzz caption Fabuwood posted for a kitchen in this finish calls grey almost chameleon-like. A kitchen designer who sells it put it simply in a Houzz thread: it can read warm or cool depending on what is around it. At a corner, what is around it changes over the width of one cabinet.

None of that is a flaw, and plenty of people like the effect; it is what makes the grey-taupe feel alive rather than flat. But it is better seen on a sample than discovered on installation day. Stand a door sample on the counter against each wall in turn, morning and late afternoon, and look at it from the doorway you use most. If one wall pulls it cool and the other warm, you will know what the corner will do. The grey shades guide explains why a grey shifts with the light more than most colours.

Lighting the corner so it reads as one run

The simplest way to pull two walls back together is to make the light on them more alike, and the counter light under the uppers is the lever you control. A continuous strip under both runs, carried right into the corner, lights the lower edge of every face frame from the same direction at the same colour temperature. That evens out the corner at night completely and during the day partly.

Three details make it work. Run the strip into the corner on both walls rather than stopping short of the blind box, which leaves the darkest spot on the counter exactly where the two walls meet. Use one colour temperature throughout; a warm strip on one wall and a neutral one on the other will split this stain faster than any window. And fit light rail, GH LRM at $149.50, along the bottom of both runs so the strip itself is hidden and the light lands on the counter and the backsplash rather than in your eyes. The rail is on the light rail page, and profiles are compared in the molding guide.

If there is a window right at the corner, a blind or a sheer earns its keep here too. Fabuwood’s warranty treats colour change from sunlight as normal rather than a defect, and a corner cabinet that takes full sun on one face and none on the other is the likeliest box in the kitchen to age unevenly.

Three widths, four heights

Blind wall boxes come 24, 30 and 36 inches wide and 30, 36, 39 or 42 inches tall, twelve sizes in all. There is no short blind box for use over a window or a fridge. Displayed prices on the review date:

42″GH WBC2442 — $497.25GH WBC3042 — $523.25GH WBC3642 — $533.00

The widths are close together in price: at 36 inches tall the whole spread from 24 to 36 wide is $35.75. The heights are further apart, $143.00 between the cheapest and dearest 24-inch box. So the width is chosen by the geometry of the corner, and the height simply follows the run. How much of each width is hidden and how much shows a door depends on the pull distance the installer sets, and Fabuwood does not publish a clear-opening figure for the door, so if a particular item has to fit through it, send us the dimension and we will check the box you are ordering. Every size is on the blind wall page, and the base cabinet that usually sits beneath it is on the corner base page.

A frequency plan for the part behind the door

The blind section of an upper is the deepest-reach storage in the kitchen: behind a door, around a corner, and above the counter. Nothing mechanical is sold for it on the wall list — the pull-outs and swing-out shelves people know from blind base corners are base-cabinet hardware. What you have is a shelf that runs into the dark. The way to make it work is to sort by how often things are used and let that decide the position.

  1. Right at the door, bottom shelf: the things used every week. This is the only part of a blind box that behaves like an ordinary cabinet, and it should be treated like one.
  2. Just inside the opening, higher shelves: things used every month — the good serving dishes, the bread tin, the second set of glasses for guests.
  3. Deep in the blind end: things used once or twice a year and easy to identify by feel or by a label facing out. Holiday platters, the cake stand, the fondue set, spare jars. Put them in a lidded box with a handle so the whole lot comes out in one pull.
  4. Never in the blind end: anything heavy, anything fragile that sits loose, or anything you would need in a hurry. Reaching past a door frame at shoulder height is exactly the wrong posture for lifting weight.

An extra shelf can change the plan if the bays are too tall for what you are storing; shelves are sold separately by width on the loose parts page. Ideas for the whole corner, top and bottom, are in the accessories and blind corner guide.

Before the blind box goes on the order

Settle three things in writing. Which way the box is blind, left or right as you face the door, stated in words on the order line. The pull distance — how far the visible door sits from the corner — which decides the filler and how much of the box shows. And the height, matched to the runs on both walls.

Then order the corner with everything else on both walls, so the two runs that meet there come off the same batch. A stain varies between parts by nature, and the corner is where two runs sit at ninety degrees to each other in the most scrutinised spot of the room; that is the last place to put a box from a later order. The build is the standard Allure one — a ½-inch veneered plywood box with a natural veneer interior, a solid wood face frame, and a five-piece door on Blum soft-close hinges — and it ships assembled in about 2 weeks. For a drawing with the pull distance and filler drawn in, ask for a free 3D design; trade buyers can go through Captivating Pro. The rest of the uppers are on the wall cabinet page and the full finish on the collection page.

Common questions

Why do my grey cabinets look like two different colours in the corner?
The two walls receive light from different directions and in different amounts, and a stained face shows its grain, so each wall can read a little warmer or cooler. Fabuwood describes this finish as adaptable and shifting with the light. Continuous under-cabinet lighting at one colour temperature on both walls brings them closer together.
What should I store in a blind corner wall cabinet?
Put weekly items at the door on the lower shelf, monthly items just inside, and once-a-year items deep in the blind end in a lidded box with a handle. Keep heavy and fragile loose items out of the far end.
Are there pull-outs for blind corner upper cabinets?
Not on the wall list in this finish. The blind-corner pull-outs and swing-out shelves are base-cabinet hardware. An upper blind box is shelved, and extra shelves are sold separately.
What sizes do blind wall cabinets come in?
Widths of 24, 30 and 36 inches, and heights of 30, 36, 39 and 42 inches. There is no short blind box. Prices run from $354.25 for GH WBC2430 to $533.00 for GH WBC3642 at displayed prices.
How do I test how a stain will look on both walls of my kitchen?
Order a door sample and hold it against each wall in turn, in the morning and late in the afternoon, viewed from where you normally stand. The sample for this finish is $35.00.
