At arm’s length: a Galaxy Horizon drawer tower, seen closer than any other upper

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Prices quoted in this article were read off the grid on the review date; the live price grid on this page governs.

Every other upper in a kitchen is looked at from across the room. You see it from the doorway, from the table, from the far side of the island, and at that distance a door is a shape and a colour. The four cabinets on this page are different, because they stand on the worktop and you use them from 18 inches away, with your hands on their drawer fronts. In Galaxy Horizon, a stain whose grain shows, that closeness changes what you should check before ordering. The four are GH WD1848, WD1854, WD1857 and WD1860, each 18 inches wide and 12 deep, from $796.25 to $926.25.

Drawers at the worktop, a shelved cupboard above

The drawers are at the bottom, at counter level. Above them is a section behind a door, fitted with adjustable shelves. The loose-parts catalogue sells shelves cut for exactly this box: AS-WD18 at $37.05, AS-WD18-1 at $37.70, and two- and three-packs at $78.00 and $113.75 on the loose parts page. Our product page words it loosely enough to suggest a column of drawers, so go by the shelves. There is a cupboard up there, and how the box is split between drawer and door is not published. Ask for the split at the height you want.

Why the grain matters more here than on any hanging upper

An open drawer with a dovetailed wood box on a concealed runner, in a white painted cabinet
A white painted Fabuwood cabinet from our Allure guide, not this stain. It shows the part you handle on a tower: a five-piece front on a dovetailed box, at a distance where every detail of the finish is visible.

Galaxy drawer fronts are five-piece, the same construction as the door, and the spec book describes their centre panel as a recessed ½-inch "MDF/veneer" panel. So each drawer front on the tower carries its own piece of veneer, and the door above carries another. Under a paint those pieces disappear into one opaque colour. Under a stain each one keeps its own grain and takes the colour its own way, and Fabuwood's note against stained finishes calls the resulting variation normal.

On an upper hung at 54 inches you would never notice two drawer fronts reading a shade apart, because you are never close enough. On a tower you stand at its base every morning. That does not make the tower a poor buy in a stain. For most people, visible grain that varies a little is exactly why they chose a stain over a paint. But it does mean the door sample should be judged the way you will use this box: held at arm's length, at counter height, under the light over that stretch of worktop.

If the tower is replacing an idea you had in Nickel or another paint, the difference is not only colour. The painted greys read as one flat plane at any distance. This one reads as wood up close and as a warm grey-taupe from across the room, and the tower is the place where you get both at once.

Tile first or tower first

A tower stands on the counter against the backsplash wall, which raises a question no hanging upper does. Does the tile go behind it or stop at it?

Tile first, tower on top

The wall is tiled edge to edge and the tower is set against the finished tile. It is simplest for the tiler and means a later change of layout leaves no bare wall behind. The costs: tile you will never see, a tower that stands forward of the uppers beside it by the thickness of the tile and its adhesive, and fixings that go through tile into the wall. Measure that step against the uppers before accepting it.

Tower first, tile to its sides

The tower goes in against the bare wall, aligned with the uppers, and the tile is cut to its sides. It saves tile and keeps the front of the tower in line with the run. It does mean the tiler cuts to a finished stained side, and that side has to be protected while they work. Grout haze and a wet sponge are not what a stained side wants.

The kettle, the coffee machine and the window

A soft white cloth resting on a honey-toned stained wood cabinet door with visible grain
A honey-toned stained door from our care guide, not this finish. On any stain, the rule for a wet mark is to blot it with a soft cloth rather than rub it.

Towers end up at coffee stations more than anywhere else, and a coffee station means steam. A kettle spout and an espresso wand both vent at worktop height, sideways, straight into whatever is standing next to them, and on a tower that is the drawer fronts and the stained side. Fabuwood keeps its advice brief: dab moisture up instead of rubbing it, stay with gentle cleaners, and put any spray on the cloth first. Steam condensing on a side panel makes that a daily job.

So leave a hand's width between the machine and the tower, turn the spout away from it, and wipe the side dry with a soft cloth when you are done, as the care rules describe.

The window is the slower problem. Coffee stations like a window, and a tower beside one takes sun on one side and none on the other. The warranty lists colour change from UV light and sunlight as not a defect, and says colours may darken or lighten over time. On a paint that change is uniform and usually slight. On a stain it can leave the sunny side of the tower a different shade from its shaded side, and different from the doors across the room. A blind or a UV film on the glass is cheaper than a cabinet.

Its side is a flat stained panel beside framed doors

A tower's side is seen at eye level, so it nearly always wants a finished skin. In this finish that is GH SK WD at $169.00 on the decorative accessories page. The skin is flat. The doors and drawer fronts beside it are framed. A flat veneered panel and a framed door can show their grain differently even when the stain is identical, and the skin is the largest single area of stain on the tower. Order it with the tower, not after it has been installed and you have decided the side looks bare. A skin from a later production is the part most likely to look like it came from somewhere else.

Before it goes on the order

  • Confirm the drawer and cupboard split at your height, and how many shelves come with it.
  • Decide tile first or tower first, and tell the tiler.
  • Place the kettle or coffee machine a hand's width away, spout turned out.
  • Check how much sun reaches the tower through the day, and plan a blind if it gets afternoon light.
  • Put GH SK WD on the same order for every side that shows.

A free 3D design places the tower beside its uppers and shows the tile line; the first reply comes within a business day and the priced drawing within 24–48 hours. Boxes leave the factory assembled, typically two weeks out, with ⅝-inch dovetail drawer boxes on Tandem plus Blumotion full-extension runners inside a ½-inch veneered plywood box. Hold a $35.00 door sample at counter height before you commit, and see the rest of the uppers on the wall cabinet page and the whole finish on the collection page.

Common questions

Is a wall cabinet with drawers all drawers?
No. The drawers sit at the bottom, at worktop level, and a door-closed section with adjustable shelves sits above them. Shelves cut for this box (AS-WD18 and its packs) are sold separately. The exact split and the drawer count are not published, so confirm them for the height you pick.
Do stained drawer fronts match each other exactly?
Not exactly. Each Galaxy drawer front has its own veneered centre panel, and Fabuwood says colour variation in stained finishes is normal. On a tower you see the fronts from arm's length, so judge the door sample from that distance before ordering.
Should the backsplash tile go behind a countertop cabinet?
Either works. Tiling first is simpler but pushes the tower forward by the tile's thickness and wastes tile. Setting the tower first keeps it in line with the uppers and saves tile, but the tiler cuts to a finished side that needs protecting. Decide before install day.
Will steam from a kettle damage a stained cabinet?
Repeated steam on the same spot is a wet surface every day. Fabuwood's care rules are to blot rather than wipe, use mild cleaners and never spray cleaner onto the wood. Keep the kettle or machine a hand's width away with the spout turned out.
Does sunlight change the colour of stained cabinets?
It can. Fabuwood's warranty lists colour change from sunlight and UV light as not a defect and says colours may darken or lighten over time. A tower beside a window can end up with its sunny side a different shade from its shaded side.
