Watch how an open end gets used in a lived-in kitchen and it does three jobs at once. It is a display, because it is the one part of the upper run where things are on show. It is a working shelf, because whatever sits there is within reach without opening anything, so the everyday bowls and the salt end up on it. And it is a landing spot, because a shelf at shoulder height by a doorway collects keys, post and whatever someone was holding when they walked in.

All three mean hands and objects on the shelf fronts and edges every day. That matters more on a stain than on a paint, for a reason that cuts both ways. Small marks tend to lose themselves in the grain, which is an advantage. But the front edge of a shelf is exactly where a mug base or a plate rim gets dragged, and a worn edge on a stain cannot be sprayed back. The last section below is about that.

One question to ask us before ordering: whether the shelves and interior of the open end come in the stain or in the natural wood veneer used inside the closed boxes. Fabuwood’s standard Allure interior is natural finished veneer, and the open pieces are sold on their own listings, so confirm what the one you order shows before you plan a colour scheme around it.

Fabuwood’s own photography gives the clearest lead. Among the settings it shows this finish in is a modern farmhouse kitchen with open shelving, a farmhouse sink, shiplap and wood accents; elsewhere it is shown with copper accents and gold hardware. That is a warm set of partners for a grey that Fabuwood describes with soft pink and taupe undertones, and it suggests what belongs on an open end.

• White and cream ceramics. Plain bowls and plates stacked on a shelf are the most reliable thing to put against a mid grey; they lift the bay and read as intentional.
• Wood. A cutting board on edge, a bread box, a wooden bowl. Fabuwood shows this finish with wood accents, and warm wood sits well against the stain’s own grain rather than competing with it.
• One metal. Copper is Fabuwood’s own pairing — a small pan or a jug. Match it to the hardware on the run if you can, so the end looks like part of the kitchen rather than a separate shelf.
• Something green. A trailing plant is the classic open-shelf object for a reason, and it is the one living colour in a mostly neutral run. Keep it away from a window that throws hard light, or the shelf under it gets the sun as well.

What to keep off it: things in bright mixed packaging, which look like clutter against a quiet grey, and anything that has to be cleaned often in place. The grey’s tendency to read warm or cool with its surroundings also means the objects on the shelf will nudge it; a shelf of white and wood pulls it warmer, a shelf of glass and steel pulls it cooler. The column that deserves attention is the last one. The 6-inch wine rack is the cheapest end piece at every height, well below the 6-inch open end, and it does a similar job: it finishes the run with something to look at rather than a flat side. If the end sits near where people gather — the edge of an open-plan room, a peninsula end, the route to the dining table — a few bottles there are both decoration and use. The angled end is the one to choose where the corner of the run meets a walkway, because the cut-back corner is kinder to a passing head. It has a door rather than open shelves, so it is the least handled of the four and the least exposed to wear; an extra shelf for it, AS-WAE12, is $16.90. The open ends are the display pieces. Most of the wear on an open end happens along the front edge of each shelf, where things are slid on and off, and on the outer side panel at hip and shoulder height, where people brush past. A few habits keep it off.

1. Felt pads under anything with an unglazed base — stoneware, cast iron, a planter. An unglazed ring is abrasive and will cut a line into a finished shelf over time.
2. Lift, do not drag, at the front edge. It sounds fussy; it is simply the habit that decides whether the edge still looks new in five years.
3. A saucer under every plant pot, and water carefully. A wet ring left on a stained shelf is the kind of mark Fabuwood’s care guidance says to blot immediately rather than wipe.
4. Dust with a dry microfibre cloth, following the grain; use a barely damp cloth with mild soap only where there is something to lift, then dry.

When an edge does get chipped, the fix for a stained finish is the touch-up kit — fill stick, marker and scraper, $62.40 — not a spray can, which Fabuwood does not make for its stains. Order the end pieces with the run they finish, so they come from the same batch. An end piece is the most visible single part of an upper run, and on a stain that varies between parts, it is the part you least want to add months later.
