Galaxy Horizon diagonal sink fronts: fitting a new face to a corner that already exists

Most cabinets are chosen from a blank floor plan. This part is often ordered for a kitchen that is already standing: a corner framed on site that needs its face, a sink corner being redone while the rest of the room stays, or a front that was damaged and has to be replaced. A Fabuwood Galaxy Horizon diagonal sink front, GH DSF36, is $149.50, and the matching floor, GH DSFL36, is $100.75. On a stained finish, arriving late raises its own question, and this page is about answering it before the carton is opened rather than after.

Why this part so often arrives after everything else

A diagonal sink front is an angled face frame with a door, and nothing behind it. It exists for corners a factory box cannot fill, so the cavity behind it is framed on site, and the front is the last thing fitted. That alone puts it at the end of the job. Beyond that, three situations are typical:

  • The corner was left open on purpose while the plumbing, a waste stack or an out-of-square wall was sorted out, and the front is ordered once the installer knows the corner works.
  • The rest of the kitchen stays and only the sink corner is being redone, perhaps to add a sink where there was a lazy Susan, or to replace a corner cabinet a leak destroyed.
  • The front itself was damaged, whether by water, a dropped pot or a pet, and it is the only part being replaced.

This finish has been on sale since 2017, so the existing cabinets in the second and third cases could be anywhere from a few months to nearly a decade old. That age is the variable this page is about.

What years in a room do to a stained door

Fabuwood is direct about this. Its Allure warranty says colours “may darken or lighten over time”, and that colour change from UV light, sunlight, smoke or certain household cleaners is not a defect. Its specification book adds that stained finishes can vary in colour between pieces and that this is considered normal, and that replacement parts may not match existing cabinets. It does not say which direction a particular kitchen will move or by how much, and nobody honestly can: it depends on the light the room gets, the cleaning products used and the individual pieces.

What can be said is that the new front starts at the factory colour of its production run, and the cabinets either side start from wherever their years in the room have taken them. The table below is not a promise; it is how we would plan by age.

Planning a late front by the age of the kitchen around it (our guidance, not a Fabuwood figure)
Existing cabinetsWhat to plan forWhat to do before ordering
Same order, or weeks oldOrdinary batch variation between stained pieces, the same as between any two doors in the runNothing special; order the front and floor together

On the kitchen order, or ordered afterwards

If the kitchen is new, the simplest protection is to put the front on the main order even when the corner will not be framed for weeks. Store it flat and dry in its carton until the cavity is ready. It then comes from the same order as the doors around it, which is the closest match a stain will ever give you.

If the kitchen is already in, three things make the late order go well. First, find the original SKU list, which tells us the finish and door exactly. Second, take a photo of the corner in daylight, with the doors either side in the frame. Third, order a door sample ($35.00) first and hold it against the existing doors. It will show you, at low cost, how far the room has moved from a new piece. If the sample and the doors are close, the front will be too; if they are clearly apart, you will know before spending the rest of the order.

How to judge the new front when it arrives

Close-up of a dark grey-brown stained shaker door with a small chip on the bottom rail, two small touch-up bottles and a fine brush on a marble counter
A chipped rail on a darker Galaxy stain, Cobblestone, not this finish. Touch-up is for marks like this one; it is not a way to re-tone a whole door.

Unpack it in daylight. Before fitting it, hold it flat against the neighbouring door, face to face, at arm’s length and then from where you usually see the corner. Close up, every stained door shows grain and small colour shifts, so the nose-to-the-wood inspection will always find something. The useful question is whether it looks like part of the same kitchen from across the room.

Then look at it in position before anything is fixed. An angled front faces the room at forty-five degrees, so it catches window light differently from the doors on either wall, and even a perfect match can look a touch lighter or darker at that angle. Owners of this finish report that it reads cooler and duller on overcast days and warmer in sun. If you can, check once on a bright day and once on a grey one before deciding anything.

If it reads a shade off: what helps and what does not

Start with what does not work. The touch-up kit ($62.40, a stick, a marker and a scraper) exists to hide scratches and small dents; trying to re-tone a whole door with it leaves a streaky, uneven surface that looks worse than a slight mismatch. Fabuwood does not make spray cans for its stained finishes, and sanding and restaining a factory finish on site is a refinishing job that should not be improvised. We do not recommend either.

What does help is time and arrangement. The new front now lives in the same light as its neighbours, so any gap may narrow, although nothing guarantees it closes. Matching hardware across every door pulls the eye to the pattern rather than the tone. And because the angled face already reads differently from the two walls either side, a small difference is often less visible there than on a front in a straight run. If the difference is clearly larger than normal batch variation, call (609) 900-3358 before the front is fitted; once it is screwed into site framing and scribed, the options shrink.

What else to put on a late order

A front ordered on its own tends to arrive without the small pieces that finish the corner, and each missing one means another delivery. Displayed prices in this finish on the review date:

Lines worth adding when the front is ordered for an existing kitchen
PartSKUPriceWhy it matters on a late order
Diagonal sink frontGH DSF36$149.50The angled face and door itself
Diagonal sink floorGH DSFL36$100.75A finished floor for the cavity; a separate listing, not in the front’s carton
Toe kick, 8 ftGH TK8$55.90The angled toe space under the front has to be closed, and an old length rarely reaches
Simple scribe molding, 8 ftGH SM8-S$39.00Covers the joint where the front meets an old wall or a neighbouring box
Base filler, 3″GH BF3$26.00Takes up a gap between the front and an existing cabinet
Door sample—$35.00The reference piece to check against the room before the rest ships

Every one of those is stained in the same finish, and each carries the same caveat as the front: pieces from a later order can vary from the originals. A slightly different scribe strip at floor level matters far less than a door at eye level, so put the matching effort into the front. Our guide to end panels, scribe molding and fillers explains what each strip does.

When the late order should be a whole cabinet

If the corner is square and clear, the complete diagonal sink base ($617.50) is simpler than a front on site framing, even in an existing kitchen. If the sink is moving out of the corner, the sink base page covers the straight-wall boxes and the farm sink cabinet covers apron sinks. Everything else in this finish is in the collection, and a designer can look at photos of the existing corner and tell you which route fits.

Common questions

Will a new cabinet front match my existing stained cabinets?
Close, but not guaranteed. Fabuwood states that colour variation between stained pieces is normal, that colours can darken or lighten over time, and that replacement parts may not match existing cabinets. Order a door sample first and compare it with your doors in daylight; that shows the likely difference cheaply.
Can I stain or touch up a new door to match older ones?
Not the whole door. The touch-up kit ($62.40) is meant for scratches and small dents, and Fabuwood makes no spray cans for stained finishes. Re-toning a factory finish on site usually looks worse than a slight mismatch, so we advise against it.
Does the diagonal sink front include a floor?
No. The floor is a separate listing, GH DSFL36 at $100.75. Order it with the front; a late second delivery for a $100 part is the most common avoidable delay on these jobs.
Is Fabuwood Galaxy Horizon discontinued?
No. It remains a current finish on Fabuwood’s Galaxy door style. The Onyx door style is being discontinued, so Onyx kitchens in this colour would be matched with a Galaxy front in the same stain.
What is a diagonal sink front?
The angled face frame and door of a corner sink cabinet, with no box behind it. An installer frames the corner on site and fixes the front across it. In this finish it is GH DSF36 at $149.50.
