Twenty-one inches: the smallest sink base, and what drawers really cost

Two things make twenty-one interesting. It is the first width with a sink base, SB21 at $386.75, which is not the same thing as being the first width you can put a kitchen sink in. And it is the last of the narrow widths, which means it is the place to look at what a drawer bank has been costing you all the way up the board. Six boxes here, $386.75 to $832.00.
The sink base starts here — but not for the kitchen sink
SB21 is a sink base: no floor-to-ceiling shelf, no drawer, a cut-out top and doors that clear the plumbing. What it is not is a box for the sink most people picture. A standard 33-inch double bowl needs a 33 or 36-inch box. A single bowl in the 25-inch range needs a 27 or a 30. Twenty-one inches is for a prep sink, a bar sink or a small utility bowl — the second sink on an island, in a butler's pantry, or at a wet bar.
The measurement that governs is the sink manufacturer's minimum cabinet width, which accounts for the face frame and the mounting clips, not the bowl dimension. If the sink spec and the cabinet width are within an inch of each other, go up a size. A sink that will not drop in is a countertop problem, not a cabinet problem, and by then the top is cut.
Where a 21 lands in a real plan
Most often as the box beside the dishwasher opening. A dishwasher takes 24 inches, the sink base takes 33 or 36, and twenty-one is frequently what is left on the short side of the run. B21 at $432.25 is the default there.
It is also the natural width for a coffee run or a small bar: a 21-inch sink base with a drawer bank beside it turns four feet of wall into a working station. And the shallow B21FD-12D at $390.00 is the box we reach for on the back of a peninsula, where full depth would rob the seating side.
A 21-inch base is not a 21-inch vanity
This trips people up because the number appears in both catalogs. Vanity cabinets are built on a shallower box — 21 inches deep is the standard vanity depth — while every base cabinet here is 24 inches deep and 34½ inches high before the top. A 21-inch base in a bathroom will stand proud of the wall and sit higher than the fixtures beside it.
If the room is a bathroom, buy from the vanity board. If it is a laundry, a mudroom or a bar, the base board is the right one and the extra depth is a feature.
The mistake at this width
Buying SB21 because it says sink base and the budget was tight. It is the cheapest sink base on the board and it is a specialist box for a small bowl. Ordering it for the main sink means discovering, after the countertop template is cut, that the bowl overhangs the box. Match the sink first, then the cabinet.
