Two doors, no drawer, and a roll-out or two: building storage a tray at a time

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

The wide full-height box is the blank page of the base lineup. Galaxy Linen full height double door base cabinets come in six widths from 24″ to 39″ — two doors, no drawer tier — and the question that matters is not what they cost bare but what they cost once you decide how much of a drawer bank you want to build inside one.

A box, one roll-out, two roll-outs, or a drawer bank

The three-drawer bank is the thing a door box with roll-outs is imitating. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy the original.

Roll-out trays are sold by cabinet width and sit on the cabinet floor or a shelf, so a full-height two-door box can carry none, one or two. The standard-height tray runs $214.50 at 24″ to $240.50 at 36″; a taller-sided version is about $50 more. Here is each configuration, with the three-drawer bank at the same width where one exists.

Roll-out figures use the standard-height tray (GLN ROD-B24 BLUM E through ROD-B36 BLUM E). The trays are on the roll-out drawer page; the banks are on the three-drawer base page. All of it is 35% under Fabuwood’s list and read on the review date.

Where the arithmetic flips

One tray never loses. A box with a single roll-out is $87.75 under the drawer bank at 24″, $156.00 under at 30″ and $299.00 under at 36″, and you keep an open shelf above the tray for the tall things. If what you want is one pull-out surface for the heavy pots and a cupboard for everything else, this is the configuration, and it is the one we draw most often.

Two trays flip. At 24″ the box with two roll-outs is $832.00 against $705.25 for the bank; at 30″ it is $916.50 against $845.00. Only at 36″ does the pair stay under the bank, by about $58. And the bank is the better product: three ⅝″ dovetailed drawers on full-extension Tandem glides with Blumotion, each opening in one motion, against two trays behind doors that have to be opened first. If you want two drawers, buy the drawer cabinet.

The widths with no bank are the exception, and the reason this arithmetic exists. Fabuwood makes drawer banks at 24″, 30″ and 36″. At 27″, 33″ and 39″ there is no drawer cabinet at all, so a full-height box with a roll-out inside is the only route to drawer access. When a run lands on 33 inches, that is the answer, at $698.75.

Base cabinets for an island: two 36 inch boxes and the parts around them

Island with two stools showing a 15-inch seating overhang and 24 inches per seat
Two 36″ door boxes make a 72″ island. The overhang for knees and the finished back are separate line items.

An island is where these boxes are at their best, because an island has one working face and a lot of bulk to hide. Two GL B36FD side by side give you 72″ of island for $981.50 of cabinets, with four doors on the working side and a single open interior behind each pair. Add a roll-out to the one nearest the range and leave the other bare for the platters and the slow cooker.

The parts that make it an island rather than two cabinets in the middle of the floor are separate. The back and both ends show, so they want finished panels in the same paint; the seating side wants a counter overhang — 15″ is the usual figure for knees — supported the way the fabricator specifies; posts from the decorative accessories page turn the corners into furniture if that is the look. Our design service draws all of it before an order goes in, because an island written as a box list looks nothing like one drawn as a piece.

One color decision belongs here and nowhere else. If the island is the only beige in the room — a Linen island under a white perimeter — it becomes the accent and reads unmistakably as a color. That works over pale oak or warm tile with brass on the doors. It fails beside Dove, which is close enough in tone to look like a mismatch rather than a choice; the Linen versus Dove comparison explains why. Either commit to the beige across the kitchen or give the island real contrast.

What a bare wide box is good at

Without hardware, a two-door full-height box is a large open cupboard with a long shelf, and it is worth using it as one. Heavy on the floor — stock pots, cast iron, the case of sparkling water — and light on the shelf, because a 36″ or 39″ shelf carrying tins is a long span. Spread the weight across the width rather than stacking it mid-span.

The 12″-deep versions are the sideboard nobody thinks to build. GL B24FD-12D ($396.50) through GL B36FD-12D ($477.75) are the same doors at half the depth, and two 36″ shallow boxes under two 36″ wall cabinets on a dining-room wall make a 72″ built-in hutch for $955.50 in bases — glassware and the good plates behind doors, at counter height, in a room that has no cabinets. The shallow boxes stop at 36″, and full-height doors stop at 39″; for 42″ and 48″ the two-door bases with a drawer are the only option. The other classic use of a bare one is the mixer garage: a receptacle inside a 24″ or 30″ box so the small appliances stay plugged in behind a door, provided the electrician hears about the outlet before the drywall goes on.

Before the order goes in: the drawerless wide-box checklist

A box with no drawer tier has fewer parts than most, which is exactly why the things that go wrong with it are all on the order line rather than in the carton. Six lines, in the order we check them.

  1. Width against the plan, with the ceilings in mind: full-height doors stop at 39″ and the 12″-deep boxes at 36″. A 42″ or 48″ gap takes the two-door base with the drawer, or a pair of narrower boxes.
  2. Trays on the same line as the cabinet — GLN ROD-B24 BLUM E through ROD-B36, standard or tall-sided — with the cabinet width written against each, so nothing is sized to the wrong box.
  3. What sits beside each door. A two-door box opens from the middle, so the question is not left or right but whether a dishwasher, an oven door or the island end needs one door to stop short. Say so.
  4. Which faces show. An island or a peninsula shows its back and both ends; a run against a wall shows one end at most. Finished panels are separate parts, ordered against the exposed faces rather than the cabinets.
  5. The receptacle, if the box is a mixer garage. It goes on the electrical drawings before drywall, inside a 24″ or 30″ box — the widths an appliance fits in with the door shut.
  6. The fabricator’s word on depth, if any of these are the shallow boxes. A 12″-deep run needs a top cut for it; a standard 25″ slab landing on a 12″ box is the mistake nobody catches until the template.

For a drawer across the top of the same widths, the double door bases are the next page along; under 24″ with no drawer is the single full-height page; the three-drawer banks own the working end of the kitchen. All of the finish, toe kick to crown, is on the Galaxy Linen collection page.

Common questions

Is a roll-out drawer cheaper than buying a drawer base?
One roll-out in a full-height box is cheaper at every width — $617.50 against $705.25 at 24″, $731.25 against $1,030.25 at 36″. Two roll-outs cost more than the drawer bank at 24″ and 30″, so if you want two drawers, buy the drawer cabinet.
Does a 36 inch base cabinet come without a drawer?
Yes: GL B36FD is the 36″ two-door box with no drawer tier, at $490.75 against $676.00 for GL B36 with the drawer. The saving is $185.25 and what you lose is two shallow drawers; a roll-out tray inside, at $240.50, gives most of that back as a pull-out shelf.
Can roll-outs be added to a base cabinet later?
Yes. They are sold by cabinet width — GLN ROD-B24 BLUM E for a 24″ box up to ROD-B36 for a 36″ — and sit on the cabinet floor or a shelf. Ordering them with the cabinet is better, since the fit is then ours to get right.
Why is there no 33 inch drawer base?
Fabuwood builds three-drawer banks at 24″, 30″ and 36″ only. At 27″, 33″ and 39″ the full-height door box with a roll-out inside is the only route to drawer-style access, which is the main reason to know the roll-out prices.
How many base cabinets make a kitchen island?
Two 36″ full-height two-door boxes make a 72″ island for $981.50 in cabinets. The finished back and end panels, the seating overhang and its support, and any posts are separate parts, and they are what turn two boxes into a piece of furniture.
Can a beige island go with white perimeter cabinets?
Yes, as long as the white is a real white and the floor is warm. A Linen island reads as a color against a white perimeter, which is fine over pale oak with brass hardware. Do not pair it with the off-white Dove — the two are close enough to look like a mistake.
