Galaxy Linen Sink Base Cabinets

Most people size this cabinet by subtraction: the wall is so long, the range and the fridge take so much, and the sink gets what is left. That produces a 30″ box more often than not, which is fine for a bowl on its own and stops being fine the moment a disposal goes under one side of it and a filter or a trash pull-out wants the other. Coming at it from the sink end is better — a 33″ bowl sends most shoppers looking for a 36 inch sink base cabinet, which is the right instinct — but it still leaves out everything else that has to share the bay.

So budget it the other way. The interior is close to an inch narrower than the nominal width, because each side panel is ½″ thick; the face frame opening is narrower again, and that opening is what any bin or tray has to pass through before it can share the bay with the trap. A trade rule of thumb: take three inches off the nominal cabinet width and that is the widest bowl that will drop in without a fight.

These are planning allowances, not manufacturer clearances; the final check is the sink maker's template laid over the face-frame opening. Undecided between two widths? The wider one costs $6.50 to $45.50 more on this page and never gets regretted. GL SB27 at $442.00 fills the gap for a 24″ bowl with a disposal. Every width arrives assembled, with the Blum soft-close hinges already hung, so there is no flat-pack step between delivery and the plumber. For a bathroom, look at the vanity sink bases instead — they are shallower and lower.

The panel across the top of every one of these units does not open. Behind it are the underside of the bowl and the rim clips, which is why there is no drawer and no shelf: the bay is left clear so the trap can drop where the sink puts it. The panel is the same five-piece recessed front the drawer bases use, so on a run of this beige the shadow line of rail and stile carries across the sink without a break.

That continuity is why the SDF versions exist. At 33″ and 36″ the false front can be one uninterrupted panel — GL SB33SDF and GL SB36SDF, at the same $468.00 and $490.75 as the split versions. The neighbour decides: a three-drawer base has a single top drawer, so a single false front beside it keeps the line unbroken; two door bases with paired fronts want the split version. Read it off the elevation, not the price list.

Galaxy ships assembled, so the back of this box gets hole-sawed on install day to suit whatever the plumber left in the wall. What you can control is where those stub-outs land. Four numbers, taken before the cabinet is set, prevent almost every sink-day surprise:

1. Drain centre: height off the finished floor and distance from the nearest wall or cabinet end. It has to fall inside the footprint and high enough for the trap to clear the deck.
2. Supply stops: both, same two references. A stop behind a side panel means notching the box on site.
3. Disposal power: the outlet or switched leg, and which side of the bowl the disposal hangs on. That side of the bay is spoken for.
4. Dishwasher tie-in: the drain hose and supply cross in from next door through a side panel. Decide which side the dishwasher is on now, because the hole goes in that panel.

A ½″ solid wood box, a veneered interior and a limited lifetime warranty are none of them a defence against a weeping compression fitting. Every other cabinet in the kitchen is dry; this one has three joints, a disposal gasket and a dishwasher hose in it, and it is opened for the trash bag and nothing else.

Three habits keep the deck out of that photograph. Put a moulded tray with a raised lip on the floor of the cabinet before anything else goes in, so a leak pools where you can see it instead of soaking into the veneer. Do not pack the bay to the brim — leave enough clear deck that a stain shows from the doorway.
