Galaxy Linen Single Door Base Cabinets

The plain B cabinet is two kinds of storage in one carcass. Across the top runs a shallow drawer — a ⅝″ dovetailed solid wood box on Blum Tandem full-extension glides with Blumotion soft-close, the same drawer that goes in the three-drawer banks. Below it, behind one door, is a cupboard. People buy the cupboard and get the drawer thrown in, and it should be the other way round.

Walk your plan and count the drawers at hand height. That number is how many places the kitchen has for the small stuff — foil, wrap, the good knives, the takeaway menus — and most plans come up short because drawers are expensive to add in bulk. A drawer bank starts at 24″ wide (GL DB24, $705.25). A GL B15 at $377.00 adds one soft-close drawer for little more than half that, plus a cupboard, in a width that fits where a bank will not.

Our column sits 35% under list, as a snapshot from the review date — the grid above is current. If you only remember one width, make it the 18″: it is the one that takes a bin with room to spare, and the one most plans have left over beside a dishwasher. Two gaps in the range matter before you draw anything. There is no 9″ box with a drawer; the narrowest cabinet in the line is a full-height door only, on the full-height single page. And at 24″ the plain B picks up a second door, so anything wider than 21″ is on the double door page.

The received wisdom is that a waste pull-out needs a full-height door. In this line it does not. The catalog lists each trash unit twice — a standard version and a full-height-door version at the same price: 15″ at $617.50 (GLN TC15 BLUM), 18″ at $734.50 (GLN TC18 BLUM), 21″ at $809.25 (GLN TC21 BLUM). As far as the catalog naming goes, the standard unit is the one built to sit under a drawer, so a GL B15 keeps its drawer and still hides the bin. We confirm the match on every order. The cheaper trick is a roll-out tray on the cupboard floor: GLN ROD-B15 BLUM E at $188.50, ROD-B18 at $201.50, ROD-B21 at $204.75, with a taller-sided version about $50 more. A GL B18 with one roll-out comes to $611.00 — a hand-height drawer, a pull-out tray for the pots and a cupboard shelf, six inches narrower and $94 less than the 24″ three-drawer bank. Narrow B boxes end up next to appliances more than anywhere else: beside the dishwasher, either side of the range, against the refrigerator. Three things follow from that.

First, the hinge. The part number is width only — GL B18 is GL B18 whichever side it hangs — so the swing is a note on the order line, and it should put the door opening away from the appliance. A base door and a dishwasher door that both open into the same square foot will meet every evening.

Second, and this is where this finish behaves differently from a white: the appliance decides how the cabinet reads. People who saw the door in a bright showroom call it cream, oatmeal or warm white; it is a genuine light beige with a slightly greige cast, and it declares itself the moment something white sits against it. A 12″ box against a white dishwasher panel reads as a beige cabinet beside a white appliance — the eye assigns “white” to the appliance and “color” to the cabinet. Stainless and panel-ready appliances read as neutral and let the beige be the kitchen. Third, the exposed side. A box that ends a run against a refrigerator shows its flank to the room, so order the matching side panel with it — the end panels and fillers guide covers which panel goes where. Hinge side, neighbour, exposed side: write all three on the line item.

Four pages sell door bases without a sink, and they differ by two facts: the width you have, and whether you want a drawer across the top. Know those and the page is obvious.

Read the third row twice. The drawer costs about $36 at any of these widths, which makes it the cheapest soft-close drawer in the catalog by a distance — and that is the whole argument of this page.
