Dropping a Galaxy Dove 3 drawer base cabinet into a run you already own
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Not every drawer bank arrives with a new kitchen. A good share of the ones we sell replace a single door base in a run that is staying — the cabinet under the prep counter that has been a shelf you kneel at for twenty years — and the three-drawer is the configuration that can do it at any width, because a Galaxy Dove 3 drawer base cabinet is made in every 3″ step from 12″ to 36″. This page is the swap: what has to be true of the hole, what each width costs, what happens to the counter, and the honest answer on matching an off-white you already have.
Will it fit the hole? Four measurements before you order
Take the measurements off the cabinet coming out, not off a plan. Every base in this finish is 34½″ high and 24″ deep, framed and full-overlay, and the widths step in threes — so the swap is clean when the old box was built to the same grid, and it is a filler-and-scribe job when it was not.
- Height, floor to the top of the old box: 34½″ means the new one meets the counter without shimming. Anything else and the counter line steps.
- Depth, wall to face frame: 24″. Older kitchens sometimes sit on shallower boxes, and a deeper new one pushes the counter overhang out.
- Width, stile to stile of the box itself, not door edge to door edge: an opening that measures 30¼″ takes GD DB30 and a sliver of filler; one that measures 32″ takes GD DB30 and a 3″ base filler, GD BF3 at $26.00, trimmed to the gap — the filler gets cut, never the cabinet, and a cabinet never goes into an opening narrower than itself.
- Overlay: this is a full-overlay door with a five-piece recessed panel. Dropped into a partial-overlay run, the new fronts cover the frame where the old ones showed it, and that difference registers before the colour does. Our overlay guide shows the three styles side by side.
What a drawer swap costs at each width
One bank in place of one door box, grouped by the openings they usually fill. Displayed prices; the filler, toe kick and labour are extra and covered below the table.
| Old box | Drop-in bank | Price | What changes in the run |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12″ or 15″ | GD DB12 · GD DB15 | $617.50 · $627.25 | The narrowest banks in the line; no factory tray is made for the 12″, and at that width we usually keep the door |
| 18″ or 21″ | GD DB18 · GD DB21 | $646.75 · $672.75 | The prep-counter swap; from 18″ up a dinner plate lies flat in the middle tier |
| 24″ or 27″ | GD DB24 · GD DB27 | $705.25 · $773.50 | The most common single-box swap; the 27″ closes an odd opening without a filler |
| 30″ or 33″ | GD DB30 · GD DB33 | $845.00 · $955.50 | Replaces a two-door box; the old centre stile disappears and one wide drawer takes its place |
| 36″ | GD DB36 | $1,030.25 | The widest; one bank under the main prep counter in place of a pair of doors |
Against the door base that would otherwise go in the same hole, the bank adds between $234.00 at 24″ and $354.25 at 36″ — the price of three dovetailed drawers and six runners the door box does not carry. Spend it where you stand: the prep counter first, the range flank second, the far end of the run never. The add-ons for a one-box swap are small: GD BF3 at $26.00 or GD BF6 at $43.55 if the opening is off-grid, GD TK8 at $55.90 for 8 ft of toe kick if the existing kick board does not survive being cut, and the GDV touch-up kit at $62.40 for the cut edge of a scribed filler.
Matching an off-white kitchen you already own, and when not to try

Dove is Fabuwood’s signature off-white — a soft white with a gentle warm undertone that still counts as white on its own — which is exactly why people shopping for one replacement cabinet land on it: the kitchen they own is some other maker’s antique white, cream or ivory, and they want a bank that disappears into it. It will not. Off-whites from two factories are never the same off-white, and a near-miss beside an old door reads as a mistake in a way a real contrast never does.
So the swap has three honest versions. Match exactly, which only works if the run is already Dove — and even then compare the sample against a door that has lived beside the window, because years of daylight can shift any painted finish. Replace all the bases and keep the uppers, which turns the job into a deliberate two-tone: off-white below is a good look under stained wood or a true colour, and a poor one under a bright white, where it just reads as the warmer of two whites. Or replace one box and let it be a feature — in which case pick a finish that is obviously different, not this one.
If the existing kitchen leans beige rather than white, read the Linen-versus-Dove comparison before the sample goes on order; you may be matching the wrong one of the two.
What an open drawer shows, and why it changes the rest of the run

The box going in is ½″ veneered plywood with a natural wood veneer interior, and each drawer is a ⅝″ solid wood box dovetailed at the corners on Blum Tandem plus Blumotion full-extension runners. Pull one out and you see pale wood and a soft-close runner, not painted particleboard — which is what makes a one-box swap dangerous in an older kitchen. Once the prep drawer glides clear of the face frame, the door base beside it, with its half-depth shelf and the front row hiding the back row, starts to look like what it is.
That is the case for swapping two or three boxes rather than one — the prep counter, the range flank, the plate drawer. The 18″ is the narrowest that takes a dinner plate flat — roughly 13″ inside by our tape — and the 27″ and 30″ take two stacks. Factory trays drop into the shallow top tier: GD CD-15/18 at $201.50, GD CD-21/24 at $273.00, GD CD-27/30 at $399.75 and GD CD-33/36 at $526.50, and the GD DCD BLUM series, $354.25 for the 15″ up to $676.00 for the 36″, is a second sliding tray on its own runners inside that top drawer. The lower two tiers never need one; the full list is on the accessories page.
Can you replace a base cabinet without replacing the countertop?
Often, and it is the question that decides whether this is a weekend job or a project. A laminate or wood top can be lifted or supported while the old box comes out and the new one goes in. A stone top can too, but only with the counter supported across the gap and the person who installed it in the loop — a 30″ span of quartz with nothing under it is a crack waiting for a knee. The cabinet is the cheap part; do not save on the support.
The sequence: doors and drawers off the old box, screws out of the neighbours and the wall, box out, floor checked — a run set on the subfloor before the tile went down leaves the new box lower by the flooring thickness, so shim it — new box in, levelled to the counter, screwed to its neighbours through the face frame, then the toe kick. The end panel and filler guide covers the scribe if the opening is not square, and the pre-assembled buying guide covers what arrives in the carton — for Galaxy, a finished cabinet with the drawers fitted and the runners adjusted, 7 days to 3 weeks after the order.
If the counter is coming off anyway, the calculation flips: replacing the whole base run in this finish and keeping the uppers is priced from the base cabinet page, and the design service will draw the run from your measurements; the full Dove collection has the uppers if the plan grows.
Common questions
- Can I replace one base cabinet with a drawer cabinet?
- Yes, if the box coming out is 34½″ high and 24″ deep and its width lands on a 3″ step; the three-drawer bank exists at every width from 12″ to 36″. Off-grid openings take a scribed filler. The counter has to be supported while the swap happens — the cabinet is the easy half.
- How much does it cost to convert a base cabinet to drawers?
- For the cabinet, $617.50 to $1,030.25 depending on width, plus a filler at $26.00 or $43.55 if the opening is off-grid and 8 ft of toe kick at $55.90 if the old kick board does not survive. Labour and any counter support are on top and vary with the top material.
- Will Fabuwood Dove match my existing antique white or cream cabinets?
- No, and it should not try. Two makers’ off-whites are never the same off-white, and a near-miss reads as an error. Match exactly only if the run is already Dove; otherwise replace the whole base run and treat it as a two-tone, or choose a bank in an obviously different finish.
- What size drawer base replaces a 30 inch base cabinet?
- GD DB30 at $845.00 — one bank in place of a two-door box, with the centre stile gone. Measure the old box stile to stile, not across the doors; if it comes to 33″, GD DB33 at $955.50 fits without a filler.
- Do Fabuwood drawer base cabinets come assembled?
- Yes. Every Galaxy base ships pre-assembled with dowel-and-glue and pocket-screw joinery, the three drawers fitted and the Blum runners adjusted, in 7 days to 3 weeks. For a single-box swap that matters: there is nothing to align on site except the box to its neighbours.
- Are the drawers full extension and soft close?
- Blum Tandem plus Blumotion full-extension concealed runners are standard on every drawer, over ⅝″ dovetailed solid wood boxes. That is the spec that makes the neighbouring door base look dated the day the new bank goes in.
