Galaxy Dove base cabinets: the perimeter and the island are two different jobs
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Half the kitchens we draw in this finish have an island, and most of the questions about Galaxy Dove base cabinets turn out to be island questions in disguise: which drawer banks go on the working side, what sits behind the seating, whether the island should be the same off-white or a Timber or Indigo accent, and what the whole thing costs against a plain run of doors. So this page plans the base level as two jobs. The perimeter run — sink, corner, range wall, ends — is the part every kitchen has; the island is the part that decides how the room works. All of it is 34½″ high and 24″ deep unless a code says otherwise, pre-assembled, on Blum soft-close hardware.
The perimeter: sink wall, corner and range wall

Start with what the walls dictate. The sink sets its own cabinet: about 3″ wider than the bowl’s outside dimension, so a 33″ sink goes into a 36″ sink base (GD SB36, $490.75) and a 30″ sink into a 33″ (GD SB33, $468.00); an apron-front sink needs a farm sink base cut for it, GD FS30 to FS36 at $806.00 to $825.50. Beside the sink goes the dishwasher, and on its far side a full-height door base for the trash pull-out.
The corner takes one of four cabinets, each with its own page: the blind corner from GD BLB36/39 at $614.25, the lazy Susan at $1,030.25 and $1,095.25, the easy reach at $838.50 and $848.25, and the diagonal sink base at $617.50 if the sink is going into the corner. The range wall wants drawers: three-drawer banks either side of the range, or the 15″ to 21″ four-drawer boxes where spices and utensils live.
| Stretch of wall | Cabinet | Code and price |
|---|---|---|
| Under the sink | Sink base — sized about 3″ over the bowl | GD SB30 $461.50 · SB33 $468.00 · SB36 $490.75 |
| Trash pull-out beside the dishwasher | Full-height single door | GD B15FD $341.25 · B18FD $373.75 |
| Inside corner | Blind corner or lazy Susan | GD BLB36/39 $614.25 · LSB33 $1,030.25 · LSB36 $1,095.25 |
| Either side of the range | Three-drawer or four-drawer banks | GD DB18 $646.75 · DB24 $705.25 · DB18-4 $799.50 |
| The prep stretch | Three-drawer bases at the widest width that fits | GD DB30 $845.00 · DB36 $1,030.25 |
| Closing on a wall | Single-door base plus a filler | GD B12 $364.00 · B15 $377.00 · GD BF3 filler $26.00 |
Where the budget will not stretch to drawers along the whole prep stretch, the double-door bases at 24″ and up (GD B24 $471.25 to B48 $815.75) fill the gap for roughly two-thirds of the drawer-bank price at the same width. Every figure on this page is the discounted number the grid showed when it was reviewed; the live grid above governs, and the ratios are what to carry away.
The island, working side: under the cooktop and either side of it

An island is a base run with no wall behind it, which changes two things: nothing is hidden, so every side needs finishing, and both long sides can hold cabinets. The working side — the one facing the range wall, or holding the cooktop — should be drawers. A two-drawer base under a cooktop (GD DB24-2 $724.75, DB30-2 $835.25, DB36-2 $1,017.25) takes pots in two deep tiers where a three-drawer bank would waste its shallow top tier under the burners; three-drawer banks go either side.
If the island holds the sink instead, the sink base goes there with a dishwasher next to it, and the dishwasher end panel (GD DWR6, $201.50) becomes an island part rather than a wall-run part — the machine’s exposed side is now on view from the seating.
| Build | Cabinets | Total at grid price |
|---|---|---|
| All doors | GD B36 × 2 | $1,352.00 |
| One drawer bank, one door base | GD DB36 + GD B36 | $1,706.25 |
| All drawers | GD DB36 × 2 | $2,060.50 |
| Cooktop island | GD DB36-2 + GD DB36 | $2,047.50 |
The $700 between the first row and the third is the difference between an island you kneel to reach into and one whose full depth comes to you on Blum Tandem glides. On an island, unlike a wall run, there is no plumbing forcing door bases on you, so the all-drawer build is the one we draw unless the budget says otherwise. Aisles matter more than the cabinets do: the island clearance guide sets out the 42″ minimum on the working side.
12-inch-deep base cabinets: the seating side of the island
People searching for 12 inch deep base cabinets usually want them for one place: the back of an island, under the seating overhang. The full-height door bases come in a 12″-deep version at every width from 9″ to 36″ — GD B12FD-12D at $321.75, B24FD-12D at $396.50, B30FD-12D at $442.00, B36FD-12D at $477.75 — and two of them backed onto the working side make a 36″-deep island with storage from both faces. With a 48″ to 51″ counter on top, that still leaves the 12″ to 15″ overhang knees need.
For a plain finished back instead, the island needs no cabinets on the seating side, only a panel, and the return angle and transition pieces (GD BTR12 and BTL12 at $419.25, GD BRA24 at $588.25) handle an island that turns a corner or steps back for a seating bay. A window-seat version of the same idea is the drawer bench seat, GD DBS24 to DBS36 at $338.00 to $425.75, a low drawer box built to be sat on.
Same off-white or an accent island? What changes on the order
This off-white is the finish that carries a two-tone kitchen without arguing with it, so the accent island is a real choice here rather than a risk. An island in the same Dove keeps the room quiet and reads as a larger white kitchen; an island in Galaxy Timber or Galaxy Indigo turns it into the room’s one piece of furniture. What changes on paper is small: the island cabinets, its finished panels and its toe kick move to the other collection’s order, and one counter material bridges both — a white quartz with soft veining is the usual pick, because it looks right on the off-white and on the accent alike.
| Line | Same-colour island | Accent island |
|---|---|---|
| Island cabinets | From this page | From the island colour’s collection |
| Island back and end panels | Dove, decorative accessories | Island colour |
| Toe kick under the island | Dove GD TK8, $55.90 per 8 ft | Island colour |
| Counter | One slab, either way | One slab that bridges both colours |
| Hardware | One finish throughout | One finish throughout — brass across Timber, brass or black across Indigo |
The colour rule that does apply below the counter is at the appliances. A stainless dishwasher or range sits neutrally between two Dove boxes. A white one shows a small gap — the appliance is a brighter, cooler white than the door — which is subtler than it would be beside Linen but is there in daylight. If the machine is panel-ready, a matching panel closes it; if not, centre the appliance between two boxes of equal width so the break looks composed. The full colour discussion, including the drift toward grey under cool light, is on the Dove collection page.
What is standard on every base: assembly, drawers, glides
A base cabinet does the physical work in a kitchen, and the three lines that predict how it ages are all standard here rather than upgrade options: ⅝″ solid wood drawer boxes dovetailed at each corner; Blum Tandem full-extension glides with Blumotion, so the back of every drawer arrives at the front; and a ½″ veneered plywood box with a wood-veneer interior that carries the counter without flexing. Doors hang on Blum Quick-Release hinges with Blumotion soft-close. Everything ships assembled — dowel-and-glue joinery with pocket screws, squared in the factory — which on an island matters twice over, since a box that is out of square shows on two faces.
Before the order: settle the sink model, decide the hinge side on every single-door box at an end or in a corner (the code is width-only; the swing is a note on the line), and count the exposed sides. Then send the plan through the free design service and the base level comes back drawn as the two runs described here, with a box list for each. The base cabinet types guide defines every family named above.
Common questions
- What size are Fabuwood Dove base cabinets?
- 34½″ high and 24″ deep, so a finished counter lands at about 36″; widths from 9″ to 48″ in 3″ steps. The full-height door bases from 9″ to 36″ also come 12″ deep, which is the seating-side island box.
- How much do Galaxy Dove base cabinets cost?
- At the discounted grid prices: single-door bases from GD B12 at $364.00, double-door from GD B24 at $471.25 to B48 at $815.75, three-drawer banks from $617.50 to $1,030.25, sink bases $386.75 to $572.00, corner cabinets $614.25 to $1,095.25. Dove is priced identically to Frost and Linen.
- What base cabinets do I need for a kitchen island?
- Drawer banks on the working side — a two-drawer base under a cooktop, three-drawer banks beside it — and either 12″-deep full-height door boxes or a finished panel on the seating side. Both ends and the back are finished panels. A 72″ island in all drawers is two GD DB36 at $2,060.50.
- Can I do a white perimeter with a navy or wood island using these?
- Yes, and Dove is the Galaxy white we recommend for it: the off-white softens the seam against Timber or Indigo where a bright white makes it a hard line. The island cabinets and panels are ordered from that colour’s collection; the counter and the hardware stay the same across both.
- Is a 36 inch drawer base worth it over a door base?
- On an island or a prep stretch, yes: GD DB36 at $1,030.25 against GD B36 at $676.00 buys three dovetailed drawers that bring the full 24″ depth to you. Under a sink or beside a dishwasher, where plumbing or a pull-out needs the opening, the door base is the right cabinet.
- Does a white dishwasher look wrong next to off-white cabinets?
- Not wrong, but visible: the appliance is a brighter, cooler white than Dove, so there is a small gap in daylight — smaller than beside Linen. Stainless sits neutrally, and a panel-ready dishwasher with a Dove door panel removes the question entirely.
