The island back in Galaxy Dove: what two full-height doors hide on the side everyone sees

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

The back of an island is the most photographed run of cabinets in a house and the least opened, which makes it the natural home for the box on this page. Galaxy Dove full height double door base cabinets — 24″ to 39″ wide, two doors and no drawer tier — give that face a flat field of off-white doors with nothing to catch the eye, and behind each pair a deep cupboard for the things a kitchen owns but does not reach for every day.

Why the seating side of an island wants doors, not drawers

Large white island with four stools and finished end panels, seen from the living room of an open-plan house
From the sofa this is the kitchen. The island back is the run that gets looked at and rarely opened.

Drawers are for the side you stand at. On the seating or walkway side of an island a drawer bank is one you will open a handful of times a year, at roughly twice the price per inch of a door box, with every pull at knee height for whoever is sitting there. Doors do the job better: a plain face, a deep space behind it, and a cupboard that takes the bulky things whole.

On an off-white the face matters more than usual, because from the living room of an open plan the island back is the largest piece of kitchen in view, and it is what makes the kitchen photograph as a white kitchen. A tier of drawer fronts across it adds lines; two or three pairs of full-height doors read as one built-in. That is the resale argument for these boxes.

How deep is an island with cabinets on both sides? Row by row

An island is two rows of boxes back to back, or one row and an overhang, and the slab depth follows from which. The working row is almost always 24″ deep. The back row is where these boxes come in, at either depth.

Island depth by back-row choice, with the back row priced for a 72″ island

Full-depth door boxes48″Two GD B36FD · $981.50At the ends; this is a big island and wants 42″ aisles all round

The middle row is the one we draw most for a Dove island: a 36″-deep island is a comfortable slab, the back is all doors, all usable from the walkway, and the seating goes at one end with an overhang there. The shallow boxes stop at 36″ wide — there is no 39″ -12D — and the two back-row options sit within $26 of each other, so the choice is about walkway and slab, not money. Whichever you pick, the ends of the island show and want finished panels in the same paint from the decorative accessories, and the island clearance guide has the aisle and overhang numbers the table assumes.

The outlet, the doors, and the walkway behind them

Diagram of a 42-inch aisle between a dishwasher open into the walkway and an island drawer pulled out toward it
A dishwasher door takes 26″ of a 42″ aisle. A back-of-island door takes about half its box width on the other side.

If one of the back boxes is going to be the mixer garage, the receptacle goes inside the cabinet, and the electrician has to hear about it before the slab is templated — an island outlet comes up through the floor, and drilling a finished Dove cabinet back after the counter is down is a repair that shows. Put it on the electrical drawing at rough-in, in a 24″ or 30″ box, the widths a stand mixer fits in with the door shut.

Then the swing. Each door on a two-door box is a little under half the box width — around 18″ on a 36″ cabinet, 19½″ on a 39″ — and on the back of an island it opens into the walkway that people and stools live in. A 42″ walkway with a door open leaves about 24″; a 36″ walkway leaves about 18″, which is our floor. If the walkway is tight, use the 12″-deep boxes and win a foot of floor.

An off-white island under an off-white perimeter, or under something else

In an all-Dove kitchen the island back is the biggest field of the colour in the room. A white quartz with soft grey veining on top is fine — this is the finish that tolerates grey, where Linen does not — and either brass or matte black pulls across the doors work, black reading a touch more graphic. From the next room it reads as a white built-in, which is what you want an off-white to do.

If the plan is two-tone, decide which colour the island is before buying these. Dove is usually the perimeter in that arrangement — over a Timber or Indigo island — so the island’s door boxes come from that finish, not this page, and the Dove full-height boxes go on the pantry wall instead. The pairing to avoid is Dove with Linen, which reads as a mismatch rather than a choice; and a Dove island under a stark white perimeter is the one place the off-white stops looking white, because the comparison is standing right behind it. The Linen versus Dove page and the Fabuwood colours guide cover the rest of the palette.

Where the range stops and the other pages start

Full-height two-door boxes end at 39″, so a 42″ or 48″ gap on the back of an island takes the double door base with its drawer tier or two narrower boxes. Narrower than 24″ with the drawer still gone is the full-height single page. The working side of the same island — the sink base and the drawer banks — is on its own pages, and the whole finish is on the Galaxy Dove collection page. An island drawn as a box list and one drawn as furniture are different things; the design service draws the second kind.

Common questions

Should a kitchen island have cabinets on the back?
If the walkway behind it is 42″ or more, yes: a row of full-height door boxes on the seating side turns the island back from a panel into storage, at $403.00 to $526.50 a box. If the walkway is tighter, use the 12″-deep versions, or leave the back as an overhang with seating along it.
How deep is a kitchen island with cabinets on both sides?
Forty-eight inches of box if both rows are full depth, 36″ if the back row is the 12″-deep boxes, plus the counter overhang. The 36″ version is the one we draw most.
Can you put an outlet inside a base cabinet for a stand mixer?
Yes, and on an island it is the standard way to build a mixer garage: a receptacle inside a 24″ or 30″ full-height box, run up through the floor at rough-in, on the electrical drawings before the countertop is templated.
How much is a 36 inch base cabinet with no drawer?
GD B36FD is $490.75 on our grid — two full-overlay doors, no drawer tier, assembled. With one roll-out tray inside (GD ROD-B36 BLUM E, $240.50) it comes to $731.25. The same width with a drawer tier is GD B36 at $676.00.
Do full-height double door bases come 42 or 48 inches wide?
No. They stop at 39″ (GD B39FD, $526.50). At 42″ and 48″ the only two-door base made has a drawer tier across the top, so a wide drawerless island back is built from two narrower boxes instead.
What colour island goes with off-white cabinets?
Timber and Indigo are the two we draw most under a Dove perimeter, and Truffle bases under Dove uppers. An all-Dove island works too and photographs as a white kitchen. Avoid Linen beside it; a stark white perimeter will make a Dove island read warm.
