Coffee bar, laundry, homework counter: the Galaxy Dove 4 drawer base cabinet outside the kitchen

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

In the kitchen this cabinet flanks a range. Everywhere else in the house it is the whole run: a coffee bar on a dining-room wall, the cabinets beside the dryer, a built-in homework counter — rooms made of 15″ to 21″ gaps rather than twelve-foot walls. A Galaxy Dove 4 drawer base cabinet comes in exactly those three widths, and those rooms are where an off-white sits hard against white trim, white walls and white machines, which is the decision this page is about.

Three builds priced, none of them beside a range

Small kitchen with a counter-height peninsula, two wood stools and a bank of drawers with brass pulls under warm light
Counter height with a stool: the same 36″ every build on this page lands at, knee drawer included.

Three small runs from the base list, cabinets only. Counter, end panels and toe kick are extra.

Homework counter with a knee spaceGD DB21-4 · GD KD30 · GD DB21-472″$1,836.25

The coffee bar is the build we quote most. The machine and grinder sit on the 30″ door box, mugs and the water filter go behind its doors, and the two banks take pods and tea on one side, bar tools on the other. Fabuwood makes a pod tray for exactly this: GD KCUP-18 at $224.25 drops into the top drawer of the 18″ bank.

The laundry wall pairs one bank with a 36″ door base — jugs and the bin behind the doors, the small things in the drawers — and lands a folding counter at the standard 36″ finished height. The homework counter is the interesting one: GD KD30 is a 30″ knee drawer at $172.25, a shallow drawer with open space beneath it, so two 21″ banks either side of it make a 72″ counter with a seat in the middle. It is counter height, not desk height — a stool, not a chair — and there is no ADA-height base in this finish to change that.

Off-white cabinets against white trim, white walls and a white dryer

A kitchen surrounds this finish with its own colour; a dining room or a laundry does not. The baseboard runs into the toe kick, the casing runs down the end panel, and the machines are the whitest things in the house. Dove reads as white on its own wall and only shows its warmth when a stark white sits beside it — and in these rooms a stark white sits beside it on three sides.

In practice: against a warm-white trim paint the run reads as one white; against a cool, bright trim the cabinets read as the softer of two whites, a difference you see at the seam and forget from the doorway. It is not the beige-against-white gap Linen shows in the same spot; it is quieter, and most people choose it on purpose, because a bright white bank in a dining room is exactly the clinical look they were avoiding.

  • Baseboard and casing: paint the trim in that room a warm white, or stop the baseboard at a Dove end panel — GD BEP, a base end panel at $149.50 — so the two whites never share a long edge.
  • The dryer: a white washer and dryer show the difference more than stainless would and less than a beige door would. Put the 36″ door base against the machine and the drawer bank at the far end.
  • Walls: an off-white wall behind an off-white run flattens both. Give the bank a colour or a tile behind it, or a wall a shade brighter than the door.

The white-shade guide sorts warm whites from cool ones if the trim paint is still open. And if the room’s light is cool — a north-facing laundry under a 4000K ceiling fixture — swap the bulb before you judge the sample, because that is the light that pushes this finish toward grey.

Eight pulls on a pair: the hardware decision is made here

Off-white shaker kitchen with stacked drawer banks, brass bar pulls on every front and a wood floor in evening light
Stacked fronts put more hardware per foot in front of the eye than any door does.

Four fronts in a 15″ box is more hardware per foot than anything else in a kitchen run — a pair beside a coffee machine carries eight pulls at eye level for anyone at the table — so this is the cabinet where the hardware finish gets decided, whether or not you meant to decide it here. Dove takes brass and bronze like any warm white, and it takes matte black without the weight black brings to a beige door: eight black bars on off-white read as a grid, the graphic look people want on a bar. In the laundry, a knob keeps the stack quieter.

Size the pull to the front. Each is only about 7½″ tall, so a wide bar crowds the rails; a pull around a third of the cabinet’s width — 5″ on the 15″, 6″ on the 18″, 7″ on the 21″ — is our proportion, and a knob dead centre is the other honest choice. Buy one, hold it against the door sample under the room’s own bulb, then buy the rest.

Four inches of clear height, room by room

Each front is roughly 7½″ tall and hides about 4″ to 5″ of open height — our measurement, not a published one — over a dovetailed ⅝″ solid wood box on Blum Tandem plus Blumotion runners, inside a cabinet whose interior is natural wood veneer. Inside width runs close to 10″ in the 15″, 13″ in the 18″ and 16″ in the 21″. What that holds depends on the room.

  • Coffee bar: pods stand upright in the top tier, filters and tea tins lie flat in the second, the bottom takes bar towels. GD KCUP-18 at $224.25 and GD KCUP-21/24 at $266.50 are the factory pod trays; GD CD-15/18 at $201.50 and GD CD-21/24 at $273.00 are the divided trays for everything else.
  • Laundry: dryer sheets and stain pens up top, the sewing kit next, then the flat things — a lint brush, the manuals. Nothing liquid in a drawer beside a machine that vibrates; jugs go behind the door base.
  • Homework counter: a letter sheet needs 11″ across and the 15″ bank gives about 10″, so paper lies flat only in the 21″. GD DCD-15 BLUM at $354.25 through GD DCD-21 BLUM at $468.00 add a second sliding tray inside the top drawer on its own runners for pens and chargers.

The one thing none of the four takes is a bottle. Anything over about 4½″ standing goes behind the door base, which is why every build has one; the accessories page has the rest of the trays.

And when it does go beside the range

The same three widths are what a range leaves over on a wall, and a pair either side of the appliance is where most kitchens put them. The width rule does not change: 15″ to 21″ is the band, under it a filler, over 24″ a three-drawer bank that holds more per dollar, and for anything that has to stand up a narrow single-door base. Two things do change indoors. The under-cabinet strip sits closer to these fronts than any other light in the house, so it is the bulb to get warm first; and the pot drawer under the cooktop is a different configuration, not a wider version of this one.

Ordering a two- or three-box run

Small orders ship exactly as large ones do: pre-assembled, runners set, 7 days to 3 weeks. Put the whole run on one order, and add the toe kick and any end panel at the same time — GD TK8 at $55.90 covers 8 ft, and a 66″ coffee bar needs one length. The door sample is $25.00 and should be taped in the room the run is going in, not the kitchen; a dining-room wall and a laundry ceiling fixture are different lights.

The 30″ and 36″ door boxes in the builds are on the base cabinet lineup, the design service will draw a bar or a laundry wall from a photograph and three measurements, and the rest of the finish is on the collection page.

Common questions

What cabinets do you use for a coffee bar?
Two narrow drawer banks either side of a door base: GD DB18-4 · GD B30 · GD DB18-4 makes a 66″ bar for $2,154.75 in cabinets, with a factory pod tray (GD KCUP-18, $224.25) for the top drawer. The machine sits on the door box; pods and tea live in the drawers.
Can kitchen base cabinets be used in a laundry room?
Yes — they are the same 34½″ box that puts a folding counter at 36″. Pair a four-drawer bank with a 36″ door base ($1,475.50 for the two) and keep liquids behind the doors, not in drawers beside a vibrating machine. Put the door box against a white dryer and the drawers at the far end.
How tall is a desk made from base cabinets?
Counter height — about 36″ with the top on — because every kitchen base in this finish is 34½″ high and there is no ADA-height version. Two 21″ four-drawer banks with a GD KD30 knee drawer between them make a 72″ counter for $1,836.25; plan a stool, not a chair.
Does black hardware look good on off-white cabinets?
On Dove, yes; on a beige door it goes heavy. Eight matte black bars on a pair of four-drawer banks read as a deliberate grid, which suits a bar. Brass and bronze suit the warm undertone equally well; hold one pull against the sample under the room’s bulb before buying the set.
Do off-white cabinets clash with white trim?
Not clash — the cabinet reads as the softer of two whites at the seam. Warm-white trim paint makes it disappear; a Dove end panel (GD BEP, $149.50) between the run and a cool white baseboard does the same. The gap is far narrower than a beige door would show in the same spot.
What sizes does a four-drawer base cabinet come in?
15″, 18″ and 21″ — GD DB15-4 at $780.00, GD DB18-4 at $799.50 and GD DB21-4 at $832.00, all 34½″ high and 24″ deep. Wider banks are three- or two-drawer units.
