Galaxy Dove Drawer Bench Seat Cabinets

Allow 24″ of bench per adult and build from 36″ boxes, which are the cheapest per inch, bringing in the two narrower boxes only to close the length. Widths step in 6″ here rather than the 3″ of the ordinary bases, which means most walls leave something over; it goes to the ends as a scribe strip, never as a gap in the middle. Old plaster corners are rarely square either — budget scribe at both ends.

An L-shaped nook is two of those runs meeting at a corner, and the box in the corner cannot open into the one beside it, so that box becomes a drawerless panel under a continuous seat. For where a bench beats chairs in a tight plan, our small kitchen guide has the floor-space arithmetic.

The carcass stands 16⅜″ and has no top; a ¾″ seat panel and a firm cushion that squashes to a little over an inch put the finished seat at 18″ to 19″, leaving 11″ to 12″ of knee room beneath a 30″ table. That is the whole calculation, and the only way to get it wrong is a thick soft cushion that lifts knees into the table. Under a window, check the sill against that finished height plus a back cushion. Width and height are the only dimensions on the listing, so assume the 24″ depth of a standard base until the spec sheet confirms it, and only then have cushions made. A bench is the one cabinet seen from a chair, at eye level, and a nook boxes it in with white: window trim above it, baseboard either side. This finish still reads as white in that company — softer than the trim, not a different colour from it — so the nook reads as a white nook with a gentler bench rather than a beige piece of furniture set against the wall. If the trim is a very bright white you will see the softness at the joint; a warm-white trim paint erases it.

Cushions are where this finish earns its keep. It is the flexible warm white: grey works on it, from pale dove to charcoal, where the same cushions on a beige bench would fight it; so do oatmeal, rust and olive, and a warm stripe. One drawer per box: ⅝″ dovetailed solid wood on Blum Tandem runners with Blumotion, identical to the kitchen drawers. It is shallow by nature and suits linens, placemats, games and the mail that would otherwise pile up on the table. Overhang the seat panel past the drawer front so the front clears it, and stop the cushion short of that edge — otherwise using the drawer means lifting the cushion, and nobody does that twice.
