Room to swing and a tone to sort: fitting Galaxy Horizon pilasters beside working doors

A pilaster is drawn as a flat line on an elevation and arrives as a piece of wood with depth. That depth is the whole story on this page. Set it beside a door and it decides whether the door opens fully; set it beside a drawer and it decides whether the pull clears. On a Galaxy Horizon run there is a second consideration: each pilaster is a separately stained part, and a set of them is worth laying out and sorting for tone before a single one is fixed. Both are ten-minute jobs at the right moment and expensive ones later.
Ten parts on this page, and the dimension none of them states
Everything here is an applied vertical: a finished strip fixed to the face or the end of a cabinet to frame something. The titles give the height and the job. They do not give the face width or how far the part stands proud of the doors, and that projection is the number the rest of this article depends on. Ask us for it on the parts you are ordering and put it on the drawing.
| Part | SKU | Price | What it usually stands beside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall pilaster, 30″ | GH PP-W30 | $201.50 | A 30″ wall cabinet door |

| Wall pilaster, 39″ | GH PP-W39 | $224.25 | A 39″ wall cabinet door |
| Wall pilaster, 42″ | GH PP-W42 | $243.75 | A 42″ wall cabinet door |
| Base pilaster | GH PP-BASE | $227.50 | A base door or a drawer stack |
| Tall pantry pilaster, 84″ | GH PP-TP84 | $455.00 | A pantry or oven tower door |
| Tall pantry pilaster, 90″ | GH PP-TP90 | $464.75 | A pantry or oven tower door |
| Tall pantry pilaster, 93″ | GH PP-TP93 | $455.00 | A pantry or oven tower door |
| Tall pantry pilaster, 96″ | GH PP-TP96 | $464.75 | A pantry or oven tower door |
| Square pilaster post, 36″ | GH SQP36 | $594.75 | An island or peninsula corner |
One line runs backwards. The 93-inch tall pilaster is $9.75 cheaper than the 90-inch one and the same price as the 84. We would rather point that out than smooth it over; confirm it with us before a quote relies on it. The free-standing square pieces have their own page, square posts, and the single outside-corner part is on corner posts.
Full overlay doors leave almost nothing to spare
Galaxy is a full overlay door: it covers nearly all of the face frame behind it, so neighbouring doors sit close together and the door edge sits close to whatever is beside the box. That is what gives the run its clean look, and it is also why a pilaster changes things. Anything that stands proud of the door face right at the door edge is in the path of that edge as it swings.
Whether it collides depends on which edge is next to the pilaster. This is general cabinet geometry, not a Fabuwood specification, but it holds for every framed full overlay door we fit.
Handle side next to the pilaster
The door swings away from the pilaster. The only thing to check is finger room around the knob or pull when the door is shut, since a projecting vertical can sit tight against a hand reaching for the pull. Usually fine; worth a look on the drawing.
Hinge side next to the pilaster
This is the one that bites. As a concealed-hinge door opens, its hinge-side edge swings outwards past the face of the cabinet before it moves clear. A pilaster standing proud right there stops the door short, sometimes at ninety degrees and sometimes well before, and the door behind it becomes a cupboard you reach into at an angle. On a pantry that is an annoyance; on a tall pull-out, the kind of cabinet where the door has to clear before the shelves can slide, it can stop the fitting working at all.
Drawers
A drawer does not swing, so the risk is the pull. A wide bar pull mounted near the end of a drawer front can foul a base pilaster beside it. Centre the pull, or choose a shorter one on that stack.
A three-inch filler buys the swing back

The standard fix is a filler between the cabinet and the pilaster, so the door edge sits a little way off the projection. It costs very little against the part it is protecting: GH WF336, a 3-by-36-inch wall filler, is $34.45, the 42-inch GH WF342 is $41.60, and a 3-inch base filler, GH BF3, is $26.00. On a tall run, GH TF396 at $84.50 does the same job over 96 inches.
Fillers have to be drawn in, not added on site, because they change the width the run occupies. A pair of pilasters with a filler behind each adds six inches plus the width of the pilasters themselves to a wall that was measured without them. Where the wall is tight, the alternative is to plan the door hand so that the handle side meets the pilaster and the hinge side faces into the run. How fillers, scribes and end panels divide the job between them is set out in end panels, scribe molding and fillers explained.
Unbox the pilasters and sort them before any go up
Stain changes how these parts should be handled on site. Fabuwood’s spec book says colour variation between pieces is normal on its stained finishes, because each is wood and each goes through a complex finishing process. On a painted kitchen a pair of pilasters is effectively identical; on this one, two pilasters from the same order can differ slightly in tone and in how the grain runs. That is not a defect and not a reason to reject parts. It is a reason to spend ten minutes deciding which piece goes where.
Stand every pilaster against the cabinets it is going beside, in daylight and again with the kitchen lights on. Pair the two closest in tone and put them where they are seen together and at eye level: either side of the range, the sink window or the pantry. Anything slightly off goes where it is seen alone, at the far end of a run or on the side of the room people walk past rather than face. Match grain direction too: the stiles on these doors run vertically, and a pilaster whose grain runs the same way reads as part of the door frame beside it.
If the pilasters are going beside a door that has already been hung, hold them against that door, not against the swatch. The colour on this collection reads differently from room to room and hour to hour, so the only comparison that counts is the one in your kitchen.
Which height goes where
The wall pilasters come in the same four heights as the wall cabinets on this collection, so the rule is to match the box, not the gap: a 42-inch pilaster beside 42-inch uppers, ending where the doors end, so the crown runs over both. The tall pantry pilasters follow the tall cabinet heights, 84 to 96 inches, and the base pilaster covers the base height beside a door or a drawer stack.
The heights on your drawing come from the wall cabinets and tall cabinets actually ordered. If the tall run is 90 inches and the uppers are 42, you need both families, and the clearance check above applies to each. For a whole wall of trim, the decorative accessories page lists every part that runs across the top and bottom of the pilasters.
Putting pilasters on the order without the surprises
- Ask us for the projection and face width of each pilaster you are ordering.
- Mark the hinge side of every door beside a pilaster, and add a filler wherever the hinge side meets one.
- Recheck the run width with fillers and pilasters included.
- Confirm the 90- and 93-inch tall pilaster prices if you are ordering either.
- On delivery, lay the pilasters out against the cabinets and sort them for tone before fixing.

Common questions
- Will a cabinet door open next to a pilaster?
- It depends which edge is beside it. If the handle side meets the pilaster, the door swings away and only the pull needs finger room. If the hinge side meets it, the door edge swings outwards as it opens and can be stopped by the projection. A filler between cabinet and pilaster fixes that.
- Do I need a filler between a pilaster and a cabinet?
- On the hinge side of a full overlay door, usually yes. A 3-inch wall filler on this collection is $34.45 at 36 inches and $41.60 at 42; a 3-inch base filler is $26.00. Draw fillers in before ordering, because they add to the width of the run.
- How far do the pilasters project from the cabinet?
- The product titles do not state projection or face width. Ask us for both on the parts you are ordering and put them on the drawing, since every clearance decision depends on them.
- Why don’t my stained pilasters match each other exactly?
- Fabuwood says colour variation between stained pieces is normal, because each is wood with its own grain and finish. Lay them out against the cabinets before fixing, pair the closest two where they are seen together, and put any odd one where it is seen alone.
- What heights do the pilasters come in?
- Wall pilasters in 30, 36, 39 and 42 inches ($201.50 to $243.75), a base pilaster ($227.50), and tall pantry pilasters in 84, 90, 93 and 96 inches ($455.00 to $464.75). A 36-inch square pilaster post is $594.75. The 93-inch price is below the 90-inch one; confirm it before ordering.
