Galaxy Horizon quarter round molding: the trim you are most likely to buy twice

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Prices quoted in this article were read off the grid on the review date; the live price grid on this page governs.

Of all the trim on a kitchen, quarter round is the piece most likely to be bought again. It sits at the joint between cabinets and floor, which means it comes off whenever the floor changes, and floors change far more often than cabinets do. Galaxy Horizon quarter round molding is also a stain, and a stain bought years apart does not always match itself. This page is about planning for that second purchase on day one, so that when it comes, it goes unnoticed.

Why this trim, more than any other, gets replaced

The angled end of a dark stained peninsula meeting a light oak floor, with a toe kick along the base
Where a stained base run meets a wood floor (Galaxy Cobblestone, shown for the joint). That joint is disturbed every time the floor changes.

Quarter round is a small convex strip that covers the gap between the bottom of a cabinet, or its toe kick, and the floor. GH QRM is $62.40 in this finish. The live list does not publish the stick length or the radius, so ask us for both before working out a quantity.

It is fixed at the one joint in the kitchen that is disturbed whenever anything happens at floor level. Floor refinishing, where the old finish is sanded off, needs it removed so the sander can reach the edge. A new floor laid over or in place of the old one changes the height, and the quarter round no longer fits. A leak from a dishwasher or sink can soak it. A floor tiler lifting the old tile will prise it off, and quarter round rarely comes off cleanly.

Most of those events come years after the kitchen went in, which is the problem. The cabinets stay, and the trim comes from a new order.

What Fabuwood says about parts bought later

Fabuwood is direct about this. Its spec book says that, because of "the nature of wood and the complex finishing processes used to generate stained finishes", colour variations "are considered normal". Its warranty adds that replacement cabinets "may not match display samples and/or existing cabinets", and that colours "may darken or lighten over time" with light and use.

Put those together and a stick of quarter round bought five years later has two reasons to differ from the one beside it. It comes from a different production run, and the original trim has spent five years in the room’s light while the new one has not. Neither is a defect under the warranty, and neither can be fixed by painting, because on a stain there is no paint to apply.

The honest summary is that on paint, a later piece of trim can be matched by repainting; on a stain, the match depends on what you bought at the start.

Buy the spares now, store them in the house

The best repair stock for a stained kitchen is trim from the original order, kept in the house. It came from the same run, and if it is stored somewhere dark, it will have aged less than the installed pieces but far closer to them than a new order would be.

Order the quarter round the takeoff says, then add two sticks. Wrap the spares in paper, not plastic, which can trap moisture, and store them flat in a dry indoor place: under a bed, along the top of a wardrobe, on a shelf in a utility room. Not a garage or a loft, where heat and humidity swing through the year. Write "kitchen quarter round, original order" and the date on the wrapping, because in five years nobody will remember what it is.

Do the same with a length of toe kick and a stick of scribe molding. At $62.40 a stick for quarter round, two spares cost less than the call-out for a single repair visit, and they are the only way to get a close match later.

When the new stick does not match the old

Sometimes the spares are gone, or were never bought. Then the aim is to place the new trim where a difference will not be read. Three tactics, best first:

  1. Replace a whole wall, not a piece. A new stick next to an old one on the same run is where a difference shows. Replace all the quarter round on that run so the eye compares new with new, and a room-width difference between two runs at right angles reads as light rather than as a mismatch.
  2. Swap old into the visible spots. If one piece was damaged on the island’s seating side, take an old piece from a run nobody sees, such as behind the fridge gap or at the end of a pantry run, fit it where the damage was, and put the new stick in the hidden spot.
  3. Touch up rather than replace. A dent, a scuffed length or a lifted end can often be dealt with using the fill stick and marker in the kit, keeping the original piece in place.

And ask us before ordering. We can tell you whether a replacement is coming from current stock, and a photo of the existing trim in daylight helps set expectations.

Where the first replacement usually happens

Not all quarter round is equally at risk. It helps to know which lengths are most likely to need replacing, because those are the ones worth fitting with extra care and the ones your spares will probably go to.

  • Either side of the dishwasher. The dishwasher is the appliance most often pulled out for service, and its door drips at the floor. The quarter round on the base cabinets beside it gets water and knocks.
  • Under the sink base. A slow leak from a trap or supply line runs to the front of the cabinet and wicks into the trim before anyone opens the door.
  • Beside the fridge. Rolling a fridge out for cleaning or replacement drags its wheels along the adjacent base and scrapes the trim.
  • The island’s seating side. Stool legs and feet hit the trim daily. It is the most seen floor-level trim and the most knocked.

Of those four, only the island is in plain view. The first three are all near appliances, often partly hidden by an appliance door or a mat, which is where a slightly different stick is easiest to live with. On the island, use the original-order spares.

Fit it so it comes off in one piece

Since quarter round is the trim that will come off again, fix it so it can. Pin it to the cabinet or toe kick, not to the floor, with small brads at a slight downward angle; never glue it. A pinned strip lifts off with a flat bar and a cloth pad, and goes back with new pins in new holes. A glued one splits, and a split piece cannot be reused.

Pinning to the cabinet rather than the floor also matters for any floating floor, which needs to move under the trim. A strip fixed to the floor holds it down and can make it buckle; one fixed to the cabinet lets the floor slide beneath it.

Fill the pin holes with the fill stick from the kit, not with a painter’s filler; on a stain, a white or grey filler dot is the most visible mark you can make on a piece of trim.

What goes on the first order

Count the linear feet of base cabinet and island that meet the floor, add the spare sticks, and order the quarter round with the cabinets. Add a stick of toe kick and scribe to the spares for the same reasons. The quarter round page has the part, the toe kick page the strip it often sits against, and the loose parts list carries the touch-up kit.

If the floor is going in after the cabinets, or is likely to change in the next few years, tell us at the design stage. The free 3D design plan and quote can include the spares, and trade buyers ordering for several units can put them on the Captivating Pro order at the same trade pricing as the cabinets.

Common questions

Will new quarter round match my existing stained cabinets?
Not always. Fabuwood says colour variation in stained finishes is normal, that replacement parts may not match existing cabinets, and that colours can darken or lighten over time. Trim kept from the original order is the closest match you can get.
Do I need to replace quarter round when I install new flooring?
Usually. A new floor changes the height at the base of the cabinets, and removing the old floor tends to damage the old trim. Refinishing a wood floor only needs it removed and refitted, if it was pinned rather than glued.
How many spare sticks of quarter round should I keep?
Two, bought with the cabinets, wrapped in paper and stored flat indoors. GH QRM is $62.40 in this finish. Keep a spare toe kick and scribe stick with them, and the touch-up kit.
Should quarter round be nailed to the floor or the cabinet?
To the cabinet or toe kick, with small brads and no glue. That lets it come off cleanly for floor work and lets a floating floor move underneath it.
What if the replacement trim is a different shade?
Replace the whole run rather than one piece, or move an original piece into the visible spot and put the new one somewhere hidden. Small dents and scuffs can be dealt with using the fill stick and marker instead of replacing the piece.
