Beside the window, for years: placing a Galaxy Horizon column where the daylight falls

Columns are placed where something needs framing, and in most kitchens the things that need framing are openings: a window over the sink, a glazed door onto the garden, the archway into the next room. So the column, more than any other part in the kitchen, ends up standing in the light. On a Galaxy Horizon kitchen that deserves thought before the order goes in, because a stain responds to daylight in two ways: over the course of a day, in how it reads, and over years, in the colour itself. Neither is a reason not to buy a column. Both are reasons to decide where it stands with the window in mind.
Seven column parts, priced
Four short columns come in the wall-cabinet heights, each marked 12, which we read as the 12-inch depth of a wall cabinet; confirm that before you draw one. There is also a one-piece 96-inch column, a column base and a custom oversized column.
| Part | SKU | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Column, 30″ × 12″ | GH CLM-3012 | $217.75 |
| Column, 36″ × 12″ | GH CLM-3612 | $240.50 |
| Column, 39″ × 12″ | GH CLM-3912 | $243.75 |
| Column, 42″ × 12″ | GH CLM-4212 | $260.00 |
| Decorative column, 96″ | GH CLM-96 | $624.00 |
| Column base | GH CLM-BASE | $299.00 |
| Custom column, oversized | GH CUSTOM CLM-OS | $1,088.75 |
Projection and face width are not published for any of them, and the custom column’s dimensions are something to agree with us rather than read from a title. A pair of 96-inch columns either side of a window is $1,248.00.
Columns frame openings, and openings let the light in
Look at where columns end up on real plans. Either side of a sink window, holding the wall cabinets back from the glass. Beside a patio door where the cabinetry stops. At the mouth of a range alcove with a window above the cooktop. At a cased opening into the dining room, which in many houses faces a south or west window across the room.
In each case the column is the cabinet surface closest to the light and, often, the one that catches it on its side as well as its face. The cabinets further along the run see the same window at a steeper angle and for fewer hours. That makes the column the most sun-exposed stained part in the room, which is worth knowing because of what the manufacturer says about sun.
What years of sun do to a stained vertical

Fabuwood’s warranty treats colour change from exposure to UV light and sunlight as outside its cover, and says colours may darken or lighten over time. That applies to every finish, painted or stained. It matters more on a column than on a door for two reasons. The column gets more light, as above. And it stands next to cabinets that get less, so if any change does develop over the years, the column is where you would see the two side by side.
We have found no reports of this stain fading or yellowing in particular, and we are not predicting that it will. The sensible response is proportionate. If a window throws direct afternoon sun across the spot where a column is planned, fit a blind, or ask your glazier about a UV-reducing film or glass, as you would to protect a wood floor or furniture in the same light. If the sun only reaches the spot for an hour in the morning, do nothing.
Everything else about looking after the column is the same as any stained cabinet: mild cleaners, water blotted rather than wiped, and no spray aimed straight at the wood. The cleaning guide has the detail, and how long kitchen cabinets last covers the finish as it ages.
Which windows to worry about
Not every window is a problem, and it helps to know which is which before you move a column or buy film you do not need. The following is general guidance for homes in the northern hemisphere, not a Fabuwood rule.
- North-facing: soft, indirect light all day. A column beside it will look coolest here, but direct sun is rare, and it needs no protection.
- East-facing: direct morning sun for a few hours, then shade. Usually fine; check whether the beam reaches the column position at breakfast time.
- South-facing: the most hours of light, but a high sun in summer. Deep window reveals and overhangs often keep it off the cabinetry; a low winter sun can reach further into the room.
- West-facing: low, strong afternoon sun that reaches deep into the room. This is the window most likely to put a sunbeam across a column for hours, and the one where a blind or film earns its keep.
A glazed door counts as a window, and often a large one. So does a skylight above a tall run. Mark all of them on the plan with the direction they face, and the column positions can be judged in a few minutes.
The same column at nine in the morning and six in the evening
The day-to-day effect is more noticeable, and it is also the one that makes this finish interesting. Fabuwood describes the stain as shifting with the light, and a homeowner who installed it in 2022 put it plainly: cool or dull on a cloudy day, warm on a sunny one. It is a light grey-taupe, and Fabuwood itself describes its undertones as soft pink in one place and silvery in another. A column by a window is where you will see that range most, because its light changes more than anything else in the room.
Do not try to fight it. A column that reads a shade cooler at breakfast and warmer at dinner than the run behind it is doing what this stain does. What you should check is how it looks at the two extremes, because the pairing choices around it, the wall paint, the counter and the hardware, have to work at both.
A one-week sample test in the exact spot
A door sample on this collection is $35.00, and it is the cheapest insurance on the page. Tape it to the wall where the column will stand, at the height of the middle of the column, and leave it there for a week. Look at it in the morning, at midday, in the evening with the lights on, and on at least one overcast day. Hold it against the counter sample and the paint card while you do.
What you are looking for is not whether the sample matches the swatch online; it will not, because no screen shows this stain accurately. You are checking whether you still like it at its coolest and at its warmest, next to the things that will surround it. The sample guide covers the rest of the method, and finding the right gray explains why greys in particular move so much between rooms.
Ordering a column for a window wall
- Mark the windows and glazed doors on the plan, with the direction each one faces.
- Confirm the column depth, projection and face width with us before drawing it.
- Decide on shading for any window that throws direct sun across the column position.
- Run the one-week sample test in the column’s exact spot.
- Order the columns with the cabinets, not after.
Columns and the rest of the trim are on the decorative accessories page; the wall cabinets and wall end cabinets that finish a run beside a window are on their own pages. Common questions
- Do stained cabinets fade in the sun?
- Any cabinet finish can change colour with long sun exposure, and Fabuwood’s warranty does not treat colour change from sunlight or UV as a defect. We have found no reports specific to this stain. Where a window throws direct sun across a column, a blind or UV-reducing film is sensible protection.
- Is color change from sunlight covered by the cabinet warranty?
- No. Fabuwood’s warranty lists colour change from exposure to UV light and sunlight as not a defect, and says colours may darken or lighten over time.
- Why does my gray stain look different in the morning and evening?
- Light changes how it reads. Fabuwood describes this stain as shifting with the light, and homeowners report it looking cool on cloudy days and warm in sun. A column beside a window shows that range more than any other part.
- How much is a decorative column?
- The 96-inch column is $624.00 and a pair is $1,248.00. Short columns in wall-cabinet heights run from $217.75 (30 inches) to $260.00 (42 inches). A column base is $299.00, and the custom oversized column is $1,088.75.
- How do I test a stain color before ordering?
- Order a door sample ($35.00 on this collection) and tape it where the cabinet will go for a week. Check it in the morning, at midday, in the evening, and on an overcast day, next to your counter and paint samples.
