Nine inches wide: four boxes, one light, and the three-inch decision
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
One family, four boxes, no variations. At nine inches the collection builds a single-door upper in the four tall heights and nothing else — no short box, no open version, no glass front, no corner. That makes this the simplest width on the wall to read and an easy one to get wrong, because the cabinet three inches wider costs about the price of a drawer pull more.
The four boxes, and the light that goes inside them
Interior lighting is sold by cabinet width in this collection, so the two line items belong in the same table. A puck set cut for a nine-inch box is one part number at one price no matter how tall the cabinet is.
| Height | Cabinet | Cabinet price | With GNK LED W09 at $74.75 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30″ | GN W0930 | $208.00 | $282.75 |
| 36″ | GN W0936 | $243.75 | $318.50 |
| 39″ | GN W0939 | $256.75 | $331.50 |
| 42″ | GN W0942 | $282.75 | $357.50 |
At the shortest height the light is a shade under thirty-six per cent of the cabinet. That ratio is worse here than at any other width, and it is worth knowing before a lighting plan is drawn across a run that includes narrow boxes. The driver and the switch are separate lines again — GNK LED DRIVER at $204.75 and GNK LED WLS SWITCH at $221.00, both on the cabinet accessories page, and both sized to everything on the circuit rather than to one cabinet.
One more part is cut for this box and costs almost nothing: GNK AS-W09, a spare adjustable shelf, at $14.95 on the loose parts page. In a column this narrow a third shelf changes how much of it you can actually use.
Nothing else is built at this width
The list of what does not exist here runs longer than the list of what does. There is no 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24-inch-tall box, so a nine-inch gap over a refrigerator, a window head or a hood has no cabinet to close it. There is no doorless version and no open shelf unit. There is no glass front — the glass parts start at fifteen inches. There is no corner, no blind and no deep box.
That matters because elevations move. A run drawn with a nine-inch cabinet in it has no fallback if the plan later wants glass in that position, a shallow box under a soffit, or an open bay. Every one of those changes forces the width out to twelve, fifteen or eighteen inches, which usually means moving everything next to it as well.
Nine inches of cabinet against the things that are not cabinets
At the standard height, here is everything in the collection that will close a narrow gap on an upper run, priced against each other.
| Option | Code | Displayed price | What you actually get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doored box, 9″ wide | GN W0930 | $208.00 | One door, adjustable shelves, and a back row you reach for blind |
| Doored box, 12″ wide | GN W1230 | $227.50 | The same cabinet with room to lay a box flat |
| Wall pull-out, 3″ wide | GNK SPO-WF330 | $380.25 | A rack on runners in the space a filler would have taken |
| Wall pull-out, 6″ wide | GNK SPO-WF630 | $438.75 | The same mechanism at double the width |
The second row is the one that should decide most plans. Three more inches of width costs $19.50 here, $22.75 at thirty-six and thirty-nine inches tall, and $19.50 again at forty-two. Never more than a handle. This width is not the economical choice; it is the choice left when the wall has already been spent.
If you do use one, line it up with something
A narrow upper only reads as deliberate when a vertical line below it agrees. The usual partner is a nine-inch base pull-out — GNK SPO-B9 BLUM at $806.00, GNK UPO-B9 BLUM at $880.75, or the tray version GNK TDPO-B9 BLUM at $672.75 — so the stiles run true from the toe kick to the crown and the narrow column reads as a deliberate slot in the elevation.
The other placement that works is hard against a tall cabinet or a window casing, where the narrow door finishes a run instead of interrupting it. What does not work is doubling up: if a wall can take two of these side by side it can take one box twice as wide, and the wider box costs less. The eighteen-inch page carries that arithmetic.
Common questions
- How much is a 9 inch wall cabinet?
- $208.00 at thirty inches tall, $243.75 at thirty-six, $256.75 at thirty-nine and $282.75 at forty-two, at displayed prices on the review date. Those four boxes are the complete family.
- Is there a short 9 inch wall cabinet for above a fridge?
- No. The shallow heights — 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 inches — are built at twelve inches wide and up. A nine-inch gap over an appliance gets closed with a panel and a filler, or by moving the layout three inches.
- Can you get a 9 inch wall cabinet with a glass door?
- No. Glazing exists at five widths only — fifteen, eighteen, twenty-four, thirty and thirty-six inches — and then only in the four tall heights. If glass is anywhere in the plan for that position, the width has to change first.
- What actually fits in a nine-inch upper?
- Things that stand up: spice jars in single file, oil and vinegar bottles, tall boxes on edge, a stack of small bowls. A dinner plate will not turn inside it and neither will a mixing bowl, so treat it as a column rather than a cupboard.
- Is it worth paying for a 12 inch cabinet instead?
- Almost always. The step from nine to twelve inches is $19.50 to $22.75 depending on height, and it buys a third more shelf plus five short heights this width does not offer at all.
