This is the fact that decides whether the cabinet is right for you, and it is almost never stated. A diagonal corner box is 24 inches along each wall, but its face turns 45 degrees across the junction, which means the shelf behind that face is not a rectangle. It is deep at the centre and tapers to nothing at both ends, and the front edge is short relative to the floor area behind it.

A normal 24-inch shelf holds a row of things — eight mugs, a line of jars, a stack of plates and another stack beside it. This one does not. The ends are too shallow to stand anything in, and the middle is deeper than you can comfortably reach past. So the way it loads is: one substantial object at the centre, or a small group clustered there, with the tapered ends left empty on purpose. A pitcher, a stack of large bowls, a plant, a tureen, a pair of candlesticks. Anything that reads as one thing.

Try to fill the whole wedge and it looks cluttered at the middle and bald at the ends, every time. Accept the shape and it becomes the one bay in the kitchen with a natural focal point built into it — which is precisely what a corner, visible from three angles, wants to be.

One width only — 24 inches on each wall — and four heights, matched to the four standard upper heights so the corner finishes flush with the runs it joins. Hung on the usual 54-inch line:

The middle two are $3.25 apart. Three inches of extra height for the price of a coffee is the best value in this sub-type by a wide margin, so if the run beside the corner is 39 inches tall, specify the 39 — the temptation to save by dropping to the 36 saves nothing and leaves a step in the top line that no crown hides gracefully.

The jump that does cost money is 30 to 36: $133.25, the largest single step in the ladder. That is the step from a corner that ends a foot below the run’s natural top to one that carries the line through, and on a corner visible from three directions it is usually worth paying.

Three things change when the doors come off at the junction, and only one of them is about storage.

1. The turn stops being a block. Two closed runs meeting at a corner read as one continuous L of cabinetry wrapping the room, and in a mid-tone that L is the single largest uninterrupted mass overhead. An open corner breaks the line exactly where the eye travels around it, so the two runs read as two runs instead of one enclosure. A white kitchen does not need that help; the closed corner is already light enough. A mid-tone one does, which is why an open corner turns up far more often in grey rooms than in pale ones.
2. The projection becomes visible. A diagonal corner box stands further into the room than the 12-inch cabinets on either side of it, because its face cuts across the junction rather than following the wall. With doors on, that is a subtle thing. With the doors off and a lit object in the middle, it becomes the feature it was always going to be. Check the projection on a drawing before you commit — it is the dimension most likely to surprise somebody standing at the counter beneath it.
3. You lose the storage that was worth having. The closed diagonal is one of the better upper cabinets in a kitchen: deep, generous, and out of the way. Trading it for display means the everyday plates and glasses have to live somewhere else, and in a small kitchen there may not be a somewhere else. Count the shelf inches you are giving up before you decide you like the look.

A corner is the darkest position in a wall run whatever you do with it: it faces away from both windows, and the two runs meeting there shade it from either side. Put doors on and that does not matter. Take them off and the finished interior you paid for is sitting in shadow, which on a mid-tone reads as a dark triangle rather than as a display.

So budget the light with the box. The corner sets the position of both runs at once, so it is the first box drawn and the last one you want to change. Fix its height to the runs on either side, confirm the projection into the room, decide the light, and pick the one object that is going to sit at the centre of the shelf before the cabinet ships rather than after.
