Fifteen inches is where a glass front becomes possible

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Fifteen inches is the first width on the wall where the front is a decision rather than a given. Below it, every upper is a solid door or it is nothing. Here the same box can take a glass door part instead, or be bought as a finished open bay — and the three fronts land close enough together in price that the choice comes down to dust and reach rather than money.

One box, three fronts, priced

The glass column below is a part ordered against the cabinet, not a cabinet in its own right, which is why the fourth column adds two numbers together.

The last two columns are the finding. A glazed box and a finished open box are $3.25 apart at thirty inches tall and never more than $19.50 apart anywhere on the ladder. Whatever you decide at this width, you are not deciding it on price.

Glass or open: the same money, two different chores

Glass keeps the dust out and the reach in. You see the contents, you open a door to get at them, and what is inside stays clean for months at a time. Open does the reverse: nothing between you and the shelf, and a wipe-down every few weeks whether the bay gets used or not. The cleaning guide is honest about which surfaces in a kitchen actually need attention and how often.

The two also do different things to the wall. A glazed front holds the plane of the run — the frame is still in place, the line of doors is unbroken, and the glass reads as a panel that happens to be see-through. An open box cuts a hole in that plane, and at fifteen inches wide the hole is narrow enough to read as a slot rather than a feature. In a mid-tone grey run, where the doors are already a continuous field of one colour, that distinction is more visible than it would be on white. If one bay is meant to be the thing people look at, it usually wants to be wider than this.

Whichever way it goes, light it. An unlit glazed box after dark is a dark rectangle in a lit wall. GNK LED W15 is $91.00 and cut for this width; the driver and the switch are separate lines.

The two short boxes have one front and no alternatives

GN W1515 at $182.00 and GN W1518 at $227.50 are the cheapest and second-cheapest uppers at this width, and they come as solid doors only. Glass parts and open boxes both begin at thirty inches tall, so a short glazed bay over a window head or under a soffit does not exist here — and, for that matter, does not exist at any other width either.

If the elevation calls for something short and open, the answer is not a cabinet. It is a shelf, a plate rail, or a redraw that moves the open bay to full height where the catalogue actually supplies one. Better to find that out on the drawing than on delivery day.

Where fifteen earns its place in a run

Two jobs. Flanking something — a window, a hood, a glazed pair either side of a range — where two fifteens read better than one wide box because the symmetry is the point. And closing a run against a tall cabinet, where fifteen inches takes a real stack of plates without crowding the pantry beside it.

The one to avoid is the fifteen chosen only because the wall happened to leave fifteen inches. Check the eighteen-inch and twenty-four-inch pages first: at the standard height those boxes cost $39.00 and $130.00 more and give you a shelf you can lay a platter on. A spare shelf for whichever you choose is on the loose parts page — GNK AS-W15 is $23.40, and the three-pack GNK AS-W15-3 is $71.50.

Common questions

Can you get a 15 inch wall cabinet with a glass door?
Yes. GNK GDW1530 through GDW1542 are the glass door parts for this width, $97.50 to $139.75, ordered against the cabinet. Fifteen inches is the narrowest width in the collection that has them.
Is a glass door cheaper than an open cabinet?
At this width they are within a few dollars. A solid box plus its glass part is $331.50 at thirty inches tall against $328.25 for the finished open box. The gap never exceeds $19.50 anywhere on the ladder.
What does matching interior mean on a wall cabinet?
That the inside is finished in the same paint as the outside rather than the wood veneer a closed box gets. It is the whole of what the open boxes charge extra for, and the reason they are not simply a cabinet with the door left off.
Is there a short open or glass cabinet at 15 inches?
No. Both the open boxes and the glass parts start at thirty inches tall. The 15 and 18-inch-tall boxes at this width are solid-door only.
How much is a 15 inch wall cabinet?
From $182.00 for the fifteen-inch-tall box to $325.00 at forty-two inches, at displayed prices on the review date. The open version of the same box runs $328.25 to $445.25.
