Four pairs at twelve inches: drawer, depth, hand and mechanism

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Six part numbers are made twelve inches wide, which sounds like a lot of shopping. It is not, because they are not six alternatives — they are four decisions, each one a straight either-or with a price attached. Settle the four and the part number falls out at the end.

The four decisions, and what each costs

Take them in this order. Only the last one costs real money; the first three are rounding errors you should decide on function alone.

Doors, or drawersGN B12 · GN DB12$364.00 · $617.50$253.50

Three of the four gaps are under $36.00. The fourth is $253.50, and it is the only one worth agonising over — which is a useful thing to know before you start pricing a whole kitchen one box at a time.

The two cheap decisions

FD in a part number means the door runs the full height of the box and there is no drawer above it. GN B12FD is $35.75 less than GN B12 for exactly that reason, and it gets ordered by accident more often than any other box on the board, by people who read the lower number as the value option. It is not a discount; it is a different cabinet. Order it when you want twelve inches of uninterrupted height — trays on edge, a dustpan, a folded step stool — and order the drawer-over-door version when you want somewhere to put foil, bags and the small flat things a kitchen generates.

The depth decision is $6.50 and should never be made on price. GN B12FD-12D is a full-height twelve-inch box on a twelve-inch-deep carcass — a square footprint in plan — and it earns its place at the back of a peninsula, along a walk-through leg, or in a hallway or laundry run where full depth would be an obstruction rather than storage.

The pair that costs nothing and is easiest to get wrong

GN BTL12 and GN BTR12 are base transitions, and the L and the R are the whole difference. They close the end of a run at an angle instead of stopping it square, which is what stops a peninsula end or an island return reading as a blunt corner. Both are $419.25, so the hand costs nothing — it just has to be right, because a transition that turns the wrong way is not a box you can quietly re-purpose elsewhere.

The exact angle and which faces arrive finished are not published on the listing. Confirm both against your plan before the order goes in, and confirm them in the same conversation as the cabinet either side of it, since the transition is what sets the line the counter fabricator will template to.

The $253.50 decision

GN DB12 is $617.50 for three dovetailed solid-wood drawer boxes on full-extension concealed runners with soft-close — the construction is worth understanding before you decide whether to pay for it. Against GN B12 at $364.00 that is a 70 per cent premium on the same twelve inches of floor.

In a wide cabinet we would often say the door version is fine. At twelve inches we would not. Reaching to the back of a twelve-inch door opening — past the stile, at floor level, with one arm — is the single most unpleasant piece of ergonomics in a kitchen, and drawers delete it entirely. If the twelve inches lands within reach of the cooktop, buy the bank. If it lands at the end of a run holding trays, the door is the right box and the money belongs somewhere else.

The alternative is retrofitting: three twelve-inch base pull-out units are listed, at $919.75, $1,030.25 and $1,205.75. All three cost more than the drawer bank. At this width the factory-built drawers are the cheap answer, which is not true further up the board.

Common questions

What is the difference between GN B12 and GN B12FD?
B12 has a drawer above a single door and displays at $364.00. B12FD replaces both with one full-height door at $328.25. The $35.75 gap reflects the missing drawer, not a discount on the same cabinet.
What is a base transition cabinet?
An angled end box that turns the end of a run rather than stopping it square. It is handed: GN BTL12 turns one way, GN BTR12 the other, both at $419.25. Confirm the angle and the finished faces against your plan before ordering.
Is a 12-inch drawer base worth $617.50?
Beside the cooktop, yes — it is $253.50 more than the door box and it removes the worst reach in the kitchen. As a lone drawer bank stranded mid-run holding tea towels, no.
Can I add pull-out shelves to a 12-inch base later?
You can, but the 12-inch base pull-out units are listed from $919.75 to $1,205.75 — all of them dearer than buying the three-drawer bank outright. Decide at order time rather than after.
Does the part number tell me which way the door opens?
No. Door hand is specified on the order, not in the code. The only handed part numbers at this width are the two transition boxes, GN BTL12 and GN BTR12.
