Wide doors, long arcs: the drawerless base on an island back and beside the fridge

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

These carry the widest doors in the base line. A 39-inch box splits into two fronts a shade under twenty inches each, and twenty inches of door is a piece of furniture that moves: it sweeps a quarter-circle of floor every time somebody wants the platters. That is the first thing to know about the drawerless wide box. The second is that with no drawer front cutting across the top, it is also the one place in a base run where you actually read the colour rather than the joinery.

What a twenty-inch door sweeps

Diagram of a 42-inch aisle with an appliance door open into it and an island drawer pulled out from the other side
Two things opening into one aisle. On an island back, the second of them is usually a stool.

Halve the box width, take the frame out, and you have one door. The hinges are Blum Compact Clip, which open to 110 degrees rather than stopping square, so at full travel the outer edge stands off the cabinet face by most of its own width and has already begun swinging back toward the box. What a plan needs from that is the standing room left over: the aisle, less the reach.

Eighteen inches of standing room with a door open is our floor; below that somebody steps back to open a cupboard, and in a kitchen used by two people at once they will. On the seating side the arithmetic is harder than the table suggests, because a stool pulled out sits in the arc the door needs — the door competes with a person, not with empty floor. Read the island clearance guide for the figures behind these rows.

The island back, and the pairing that makes it double-sided

An island has a working face and a looking face. The working face gets the sink and the drawers. The looking face is seen constantly from the next room and opened perhaps twice a week, which is the exact description of what a door box is good at — and with no drawer tier across the top, the run reads as one piece of furniture rather than a sequence of fronts. Where the plan gets interesting is the second row, because the depth of the island is decided by what you put behind the working boxes.

Island depth, row by row
How it is builtBox depthThe back-row boxWhat it suits
One row, full depth, seating overhang behind it24″ of box, about 39″ of slab with a 15″ overhangNone — brackets or a finished panelA room that wants stools more than it wants storage
Full-depth working row plus a shallow back row36″ of boxGN B36FD-12D · $477.75The one we draw most: both faces usable, a slab you can still reach across
Two shallow rows, back to back24″ of boxGN B24FD-12D · $396.50 either sideA narrow galley island or a bar run: storage on both faces, no sink
Two full-depth rows48″ of boxGN B36FD · $490.75Big rooms only, and only with 42″ aisles all round

The third row is the one nobody draws and several people want. Two 12-inch-deep boxes back to back make an island two feet deep that opens from both sides — plates, glassware and linens on one face, bar things on the other, in a room that could not carry a three-foot island at all. Plan around the fact that nothing passes through: there is no shared middle, so each side owns its own contents and you decide which at the drawing stage.

Two limits on the shallow boxes. They stop at 36 inches, so a 39-inch bay in a shallow back row is two cabinets. And however the island is built, its ends are on show from every angle: finished ends, toe kick and panel work come from the decorative accessories, with the side panel listings carrying the rest.

Beside the fridge and the ovens

  • Next to the refrigerator. A GN B24FD at $403.00 is the platter, tray and big-bowl cabinet, and it sits happily beside an appliance because nothing in it is wanted in a hurry. The panel money goes on the fridge’s exposed flank rather than the cabinet’s: GN REP1296, a 12″ × 96″ refrigerator end panel, is $224.25.
  • Where the dishwasher ends a run. The machine’s exposed side takes the GN DWR6 dishwasher panel at $201.50, so the run finishes in cabinet rather than appliance casing — and a 24″ drawerless box beside it matches the machine’s face width exactly.
  • As an appliance garage at 30 inches. GN B30FD at $461.50 keeps the toaster and the kettle plugged in behind a flat door. The receptacle goes inside the cabinet, which makes it an item on the electrical drawing at rough-in rather than a conversation after the counter is templated. If the garage wants to be at eye level instead, GNK WAG2418 is a 24″ wall version at $968.50.
  • Not immediately beside the range. Keep a drawer within arm’s reach of the burners and put the door box one cabinet further along.
  • One ordering advantage worth naming: a two-door box has no hand. Nothing to specify, no arc to mark, nothing to get wrong on the order line — unlike every cabinet on the single door page.

What a Galaxy Nickel door does at thirty-nine inches wide

A mid-tone gray shaker kitchen with a white quartz counter and dark hardware
Mid-tone gray read as a field rather than as a sequence of fronts. That is what a pair of full-height doors gives you.

This is the largest unbroken area of paint below the counter in the whole line. A plain B has a drawer front cutting a horizontal line across its top; these do not, so the eye takes the pair of doors as a single plane of colour. From a doorway or a sofa it is the run that makes a kitchen register as a gray kitchen — very nearly the only place in a base run where the finish does visual work rather than just being the colour the boxes happen to be.

Which cuts both ways. A large flat field forgives the marks a base cabinet collects — knee-height scuffs, the mop, the door people push shut with a foot — better than a white one would, and that is the everyday argument for this depth of gray. The same flat field is less forgiving of dust and dried water spots, which sit visibly on an uninterrupted panel in a way they do not across a run broken up by drawer fronts. Plan on wiping rather than touching up; the care guide has the method.

Sample it where it will live: tape a door sample low on the end of the island, at knee height rather than on a wall, and look at it after dark under the bulbs you will actually own. A mid-tone gray stays neutral under 3000K to 4000K light and can read a shade duller under very warm lamps. The gray shade guide places this one against the lighter and deeper grays.

Where the drawerless range stops

Three edges before the box list goes final. The two-door full-height cabinets end at 39 inches, so a 42- or 48-inch bay is either a drawer-tier box from the double door page — GN B42 at $757.25, GN B48 at $815.75 — or two narrower cabinets, which is the better answer in a tight aisle anyway. The shallow versions end at 36. And the roll-out trays stop at GNK ROD-B36 BLUM E, $240.50, so nothing on the roll-out page fits a 39-inch box.

Below 24 inches, a drawerless box has one door instead of two and moves to the full-height single page. Whatever faces the cook — a sink base, a run of drawer banks — is catalogued separately, and the finish entire sits on the collection page. Nobody has ever built a good island off a spreadsheet of widths; send us the room and the free 3D design service will come back with the stools, the aisles and the arcs drawn in.

Common questions

How far does a base cabinet door swing into the aisle?
About as far as the door is wide, which on a pair of doors is roughly half the cabinet: near enough 11½″ from a 24″ box and 19″ from a 39″. Blum hinges open to 110 degrees, so the leaf travels past square before it stops. Put a 39″ box on a 36″ aisle and about 17 inches of standing room survives; eighteen is our floor.
Is it worth putting cabinets on the back of an island?
Where the walkway behind clears 42 inches, yes: $403.00 to $526.50 buys a box that turns a decorative panel into a cupboard. Tighter than that and you are choosing between the shallow 12″ versions and giving the back over to a seating overhang.
How deep does an island get if both faces have storage?
Two full-depth rows come to four feet of box; a full-depth working row with a shallow row behind it comes to three; two shallow rows back to back come to two. Add the countertop overhang to each. Three feet is the build we draw most, and the two-foot version fits rooms that no ordinary island will.
Is there a 42 inch base cabinet with no drawer?
No — the drawerless pairs finish at 39 inches with GN B39FD, $526.50. Wider than that, every two-door base in the line carries a drawer tier, GN B42 at $757.25 and GN B48 at $815.75, so a broad drawerless span has to be assembled from a pair of cabinets.
What does a 36 inch drawerless base cost?
GN B36FD sits at $490.75: a pair of full-overlay doors, nothing above them, built and hung on Blum soft-close hinges before it ships. Take the same cabinet at half depth, GN B36FD-12D, and it is $477.75; add the drawer tier back and GN B36 is $676.00.
Do I have to choose a hinge side on a two door base cabinet?
No — one of the quiet advantages of these. Two doors meet in the middle, so there is no hand to specify. Handing only matters on the single-door boxes, where it has to be written on the order line because the SKU does not carry it.
Do gray cabinets show marks on a large door panel?
Less than white for the marks a base run actually collects — scuffs, fingerprints, the toe of a shoe. More than white for dust and dried water spots, which read clearly across a big uninterrupted panel. Expect to wipe it and expect never to need a touch-up pen.
