Trays on edge and the vacuum: the Galaxy Nickel base with no drawer in the way

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Every other base cabinet in the line is measured across. This one is measured upward. Take the drawer tier off a base and the door runs from the toe kick to the underside of the counter, and what sits behind it is roughly thirty inches of uninterrupted height at the full two feet of depth — the only place in a kitchen, short of a pantry, where a half-sheet pan stands on its edge and a vacuum stands on its wheels. The widths run 9 to 21 inches. What you buy is the height.

The things that only fit here

Work through the alternatives and the list gets short fast. A drawer bank divides the space into tiers six to nine inches tall. A wall cabinet is twelve inches deep and starts eighteen inches above the counter, so nothing heavy and nothing tall lives there comfortably. A tall pantry solves everything and needs a wall you may not have. What is left for the objects that are simply too big is this box, and the honest way to buy one is to stand the object up, measure it, and pick the width from the table.

Two footnotes. The clear opening is a couple of inches under the width on the label — framed construction gives that back to the face frame, and the figure is not published, so measure your object and let us check it against the spec sheet. And the same widths with a drawer on top cost $32.50 to $35.75 more on the single door page, so you are paying less here and getting more height. The trade is the drawer. Count the drawers in the plan before you fill a wall with these; a kitchen can end up with nowhere to put a spatula.

The nine-inch box, and what to do when there is not room for one

Nine inches is the narrowest cabinet in the Allure Galaxy base line and the only width never offered with a drawer, for the obvious reason that a nine-inch drawer is a pencil tray. Take the face frame off each side and the usable opening is nearer seven inches than nine — hopeless for anything stacked, close to ideal for anything flat. That is the whole design brief: trays, racks, boards, platters, pot lids and muffin tins, filed like books and pulled out one at a time.

There is hardware listed against this width, and it is worth knowing what it costs relative to the box. GNK TDPO-B9 BLUM is a 9″ base pull-out at $672.75, GNK SPO-B9 BLUM is $806.00 and GNK UPO-B9 BLUM is $880.75 — two and three times the price of the $273.00 cabinet they go into. Not an argument against them; an argument for knowing which purchase is the real one.

If the plan has no nine spare inches, the fallbacks exist and are worse. A three- or six-inch filler pull-out — GNK SPO-BF3 at $334.75, GNK SPO-BF6 at $380.25 — takes bottles and jars but never a tray. A tray divider inside a wider box works if you will give up part of a cupboard. And where two of these flank an oven, order them as a mirrored pair with the hinges outboard so both doors open away from it; hand is a line on the order, not a suffix in the code.

Turning the twelve-inch box into a pull-out pantry

Tall pantry cabinets in a kitchen run, floor to ceiling, beside standard base and wall cabinets
A tall pantry does this job properly on a wall that has room for one. The base conversion is for the wall that does not.

This is the other reason people come to a drawerless box. A base pull-out pantry is a tall basket frame that uses the whole opening, and it only works behind a door that runs the whole height — a plain B’s drawer rail cuts the travel short at the top. For a twelve-inch cabinet the listed units are GNK SPO-B12 BLUM at $919.75, GNK UPO-B12 BLUM at $1,030.25 and GNK UKBPO-B12 BLUM at $1,205.75; a width up, GNK UKBPO-B15 BLUM is $1,433.25.

Put the arithmetic on the table first: GN B12FD at $328.25 plus GNK SPO-B12 BLUM at $919.75 is $1,248.00 for twelve inches of groceries that come out to meet you. It is worth it in two situations — the wall with no room for a tall pantry at all, and the awkward gap beside a refrigerator where nothing else earns its space. Everywhere else it is a luxury.

One practical note on the door-mounted versions: the load hangs on the door and its hinges. Blum Compact Clip hinges are six-way adjustable and quick-release, so a door that has settled comes back into line in a minute without tools — but that is not a substitute for loading it sensibly. The range sits on the pull-out organiser page, priced against the box width each one fits.

The twelve-inch-deep version, and the rooms it belongs in

Every width on this page also exists at half depth, carrying a -12D suffix: GN B09FD-12D at $266.50, GN B12FD-12D at $321.75, GN B15FD-12D at $331.50, GN B18FD-12D at $364.00 and GN B21FD-12D at $390.00. The saving against the full-depth twin is $6.50 to $9.75 — under three per cent — so nobody chooses shallow to save money. You choose it because twenty-four inches of cabinet would eat a walkway, and because a shallow run does something a deep one cannot: everything in it is visible from the front, with no back row.

The real cost of going shallow is the countertop. A standard slab is cut for a 24-inch box plus an inch and a half of overhang; a shallow run wants a top around 13½ inches deep, which is a separate cut out of the same slab. Fabricators price by slab and by linear foot rather than by the square inches you use, so the narrow top is rarely proportionally cheaper and sometimes is not cheaper at all. Say it at template, not on install day.

What twelve inches will hold: dinner plates, glassware, folded linens, books, a printer, shoes in bins. What it will not: a stock pot, a sheet pan lying flat, or most of the inventory in the first table above. The catalog’s roll-out trays are listed against the full-depth boxes, so ask before adding one to a -12D. And on a hall run in particular, where bags and boots land at knee height, a mid-tone gray is the finish that still looks intact after a year — the care guide covers the rest.

Reaching the back of a deep box that has no drawer

Twenty-four inches deep with one shelf at eighteen means whatever sits behind the front row is a crouch and a reach. Two fixes at very different prices. The free one is the shelf: ¾″ and adjustable on pins, so it can be dropped to put the tall items above it rather than beside them. The paid one is a roll-out tray, and the list is shorter here than on the wide boxes — nothing is built for a 9″ or a 12″, because there is not enough width inside the frame to run hardware down both sides.

  • 15″ — GNK ROD-B15 BLUM E at $188.50, or the high-sided GNK ROD-B15 BLUM H at $240.50.
  • 18″ — GNK ROD-B18 BLUM E at $201.50, high-sided GNK ROD-B18 BLUM H at $250.25.
  • 21″ — GNK ROD-B21 BLUM E at $204.75, high-sided GNK ROD-B21 BLUM H at $253.50.

The E and H suffixes are the part nobody explains. E is standard height: a low lip, for pans, appliance bodies and anything you lift out over the edge. H is high-sided, about fifty dollars more, for boxes, bags and bottles that would otherwise tip as the tray runs. In a cabinet bought for tall objects, H is usually right — a rare case of the dearer option being the correct default. Both are on the roll-out page.

The neighbouring pages

Wider than 21 inches with the drawer still gone — the island back, the bulk cupboard — is the full-height double door page. The same five widths with a drawer on top are the single door bases, and the cooking positions want drawer banks whatever else the plan does. Waste units sit on the trash pull-out page, panels and toe kick on the decorative accessories page, and the whole finish on the collection page. If the tall objects are the reason you are reading this, list them in the design request and we draw the boxes around them.

Common questions

Where do you store baking sheets and cutting boards in a kitchen?
On edge, in a door-only base with no drawer above it. The 9″ box, GN B09FD at $273.00, is built for exactly this — about seven inches of clear opening and the full height of the cabinet, so sheet pans, cooling racks, boards, platters and pot lids file vertically and come out one at a time.
What size base cabinet fits a stand mixer?
An 18″ full-height box, GN B18FD at $373.75, takes a common tilt-head mixer parked assembled with the door shut; measure yours with the head down first, because heights vary. A 21″, GN B21FD at $399.75, leaves room for the attachments beside it.
Can you put a pull-out pantry in a base cabinet?
Yes, and it needs a full-height door — a drawer rail stops the unit short at the top. For a 12″ box the listed units run GNK SPO-B12 BLUM at $919.75, GNK UPO-B12 BLUM at $1,030.25 and GNK UKBPO-B12 BLUM at $1,205.75. With the GN B12FD at $328.25 that is $1,250 and up for twelve inches of groceries.
How much is a 12 inch deep base cabinet?
$266.50 to $390.00 across the five widths: GN B09FD-12D $266.50, GN B12FD-12D $321.75, GN B15FD-12D $331.50, GN B18FD-12D $364.00, GN B21FD-12D $390.00. Only $6.50 to $9.75 under the full-depth twin, so depth is a planning decision, not a budget one.
What is the difference between a standard and a high roll-out tray?
Side height. The standard tray (the E suffix) has a low lip and suits pans and appliance bodies you lift out over the edge; the high-sided tray (H) runs about fifty dollars more and keeps boxes, bags and bottles upright as the tray moves. In a cabinet bought for tall items, the high one is usually right.
Where do 12 inch deep base cabinets go outside a kitchen?
A hall or mudroom drop-zone, a laundry wall under a folding counter, the back of a peninsula or bar, and one row of a double-sided island — anywhere a full-depth box would take the walkway. Budget for a countertop cut to the shallow depth and tell the fabricator at template.
