Read the last column twice. Flat, it runs from $234.00 to $354.25 — a narrow band for a 24-inch spread of width, because what you are buying is three boxes and six runners and those cost roughly what they cost whatever the cabinet is doing. Per inch of width, the picture changes: about $9.75 at 24″, $9.84 at 36″, and $21.13 at 12″. The narrow cabinets pay for the same hardware over half the storage.

That one observation drives everything below. The premium is not a percentage to be argued about; it is a roughly fixed cost per cabinet, which means the decision is never “drawers or doors” in the abstract — it is which specific openings are worth about two hundred and fifty dollars each.

Assume the budget stops somewhere. Spend it down this list, in this sequence, and stop when the money runs out. We have drawn enough kitchens to know which rungs people thank us for later.

1. Beside the dishwasher. Unload standing, turn once, drop. It is used every day by everyone in the house, and it is the position nobody has ever told us they regretted. 24″ or 30″.
2. At the main prep counter. Knives, boards, wraps, the gadget tier on top. This is where full extension pays, because the back third of the cabinet becomes reachable without kneeling.
3. The flank of the range. Tools and spices at the height of the hand already holding a pan. One bank, not two — the second one gets filled with things that belong elsewhere.
4. The island’s working side, if there is an island. Not the seating side; a drawer that opens into a stool is a drawer nobody opens.
5. A second prep-counter bank, so plates and cutlery stop sharing a cabinet. By this rung the kitchen is genuinely well sorted and the next dollar has somewhere better to go.
6. Everything else — and here the honest answer is to stop and buy a roll-out instead. GNK ROD-B24 BLUM E at $214.50 puts the back of one shelf inside a door base on runners for less than the drawer premium at the same width, and on the accessories page the whole ROD range runs $188.50 to $286.00.

The sixth rung is the one worth arguing with. A roll-out is not as good as a drawer — it has a door in front of it, so it is two motions rather than one, and the shelf is not a box that holds things upright. But at the pantry end of a run, in a cabinet opened twice a week, two motions is fine and the difference buys most of another bank somewhere that matters.

The same ladder priced. These figures are the premium only — the extra you spend by choosing drawers at those openings, not the cost of the cabinets themselves.

Four banks is more than most kitchens we ship, and a kitchen with the first two on that list is already better organised than the one it replaced. If the budget reaches three, take the third and stop; the fourth is a luxury and it is fine to say so out loud. But the item that actually justifies the money is geometric. A base cabinet is 24″ deep and its shelf is 18″ deep, and the back of that shelf is where things go to be forgotten — you cannot see it without crouching and you cannot reach it without moving whatever is in front. Full extension brings the entire footprint out past the face frame and presents it from above. You are not buying three drawers so much as buying the back of the cabinet, three times over, and that is why the premium reads as good value at the prep counter and as waste at the dead end of a run.

There is a second, smaller thing. A full-overlay drawer bank has no centre stile and no fixed rail eating the middle of the opening, so the three fronts read as one continuous panel and the widest drawer is as wide as the cabinet allows. On a two-door base of the same width, the stile is in the way of everything.

A ladder is only useful if it has a bottom. These are the openings where we talk people out of drawers, and the reasoning is the same in each case: the premium is roughly fixed, so it is wasted anywhere it buys less than a full cabinet’s worth of access.

• The 12″ and 15″ banks, at $253.50 and $250.25 over their door equivalents. That is the highest premium per inch in the line — more than twice the 24″ rate — spent on drawers too narrow to sort anything larger than foil boxes. GN B12 at $364.00 with a narrow roll-out inside it does more.
• The dead end of a run, past the refrigerator or around a corner where nobody stands. Full extension you cannot stand square to is full extension you do not use.
• Any cabinet behind a door swing or inside a tight galley pinch point. Measure the aisle before you spend here; the kitchen dimensions guide has the clearances.
• Under the sink and under a cooktop. Neither is this cabinet’s job — the first takes a sink base, the second a two-drawer configuration whose deep top tier survives the appliance body.

Every bank you add turns another three feet of the kitchen below the counter into drawer fronts, and drawer fronts are the surface hands land on. A three-tier bank is the largest unbroken expanse of any finish at hand height in the room — larger than a door, because no stile interrupts it, and lower than an upper, so it collects everything a palm carries.

That is the practical reason a mid-tone gray earns its place on this particular cabinet. Fingerprints, the smear beside a pull, a splash from the sink — a neutral at this depth absorbs all of it in a way a white front does not, which is why it keeps looking presentable in a kitchen that gets cooked in. The counterweight is honest and worth saying: it shows dust and dried water spots more than a white would, particularly along the top rail of a front under a dark counter. Widths step in threes, so the bank drops into the grid wherever a door base would have gone, and everything ships pre-assembled with the drawers hung and the runners set, seven days to three weeks out. Work down the ladder, mark the width beside each position on the plan, and price the rest of the run from the base cabinet lineup or the full collection.
