Thirty inches: where the third drawer stops costing extra

Something changes between twenty-four inches and thirty, and it is not in any brochure. Down at 24 the two-drawer bank costs $19.50 more than the three-drawer one; at 30 it costs $9.75 less. The sign flips, and it stays flipped all the way to the end of the board. Eleven part numbers are made at this width — more than at any width except 36 — and the drawer question is the one worth spending your attention on.
Two drawers or three, and the width where the answer changes

Which makes the thirty-inch decision purely functional, and we would take the three-drawer version almost every time. GN DB30-2 gives you two drawers deep enough for a stockpot standing up, a casserole dish or a stand mixer — and nowhere at all for a spatula. GN DB30 puts a shallow drawer on top for the small flat things every kitchen has too many of, and still leaves two deep ones below. Take the two-drawer version only when the bank sits beside the range and its entire job is pans, with a cutlery drawer already within reach.
The insert that costs more than the cabinet
Once the bank is bought, the drawer inserts for this width run from modest to startling. GNK DPS-30/33, for a 30–33 inch drawer, is $302.25. GN CD-27/30 is $399.75. GNK DCD-30 BLUM, a hardware-equipped divider, is $581.75. And GNK DTD-DB30 BLUM is $884.00 — $39.00 more than the entire three-drawer cabinet it is fitted into.
None of that is unreasonable; a tiered insert on its own runners is a mechanism, and mechanisms are what cost money in cabinetry. But it is the sort of number that should arrive at the quoting stage rather than at the end of one. A roll-out for a door box at this width, GNK ROD-B30 BLUM E, is $227.50, with the high-sided version at $279.50 — and the same rule holds as everywhere below: two roll-outs plus GN B30 at $555.75 comes to $1,010.75, more than the factory drawer bank.
The other eight boxes at this width
Thirty is an appliance number, so several of these exist because something else is thirty inches. GN BOC30 at $598.00 is the only base oven cabinet made at any width. GN BMC30 at $695.50 carries an under-counter microwave bay — not published on the listing, so measure yours. GN FS30 at $806.00 is the narrowest apron sink cabinet, and the apron cut-out is the measurement to confirm before the sink is ordered rather than after.
The conventional boxes are GN B30FD-12D at $442.00 on a shallow carcass, GN B30FD at $461.50 and GN SB30 at $461.50 — identical money for a full-height door box and a sink base, as at 27 — and GN B30 at $555.75, the standard drawer-over-doors box. Two outliers round it off: GN KD30 at $172.25 is a knee drawer, the shallow drawer that spans a desk opening and has almost no carcass to pay for, and GN DBS30 at $383.50 is a bench seat for banquette seating rather than a counter run.
A thirty-inch drawer front is a large flat plane
Worth one sentence about the finish, because it only matters at this width and above. A 30-inch drawer front is one of the biggest uninterrupted surfaces in a kitchen, and a mid-tone gray reads it as a single field rather than as a frame around a panel — which is flattering, and which also means a shadow from a poorly-adjusted runner shows along the whole length.
