Three inches in either direction: what 27 costs against 24 and 30

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Twenty-seven exists to rescue a wall that will not divide, and the only question anyone really has about it is what the three inches cost. So rather than describe the width, this page prices it — every family, at 24, 27 and 30 — because the step is different in each one and in two of them the answer is that the width is not made at all.

Every family, priced across three widths

Read across a row for the cost of moving a cabinet up or down the grid; read down the 27 column for the whole of what is stocked here.

Five part numbers, then: GN B27FD-12D, GN B27FD, GN SB27, GN B27 and GN DB27. Everything else a base run might want — a corner of any description, a farmhouse bowl, an appliance bay, a pan-only or a four-way bank — is absent. A plan that specifies one of those here is a plan that has to be redrawn, and redrawing it now is a great deal cheaper than redrawing it off the back of a truck.

What the rows are telling you

Three things fall out of that table and all three are useful beyond this page.

First, on the door and sink families the three-inch step costs $13.00 to $45.50. A three-inch base filler, GN BF3, is $26.00 and stores nothing. So on a wall where the choice is a wider cabinet or a strip of dead wood, the cabinet is very often the same money or less — and it is always the better buy.

Second, the drawer banks behave differently: $68.25 from 24 to 27, and $71.50 from 27 to 30. Drawers are priced closer to their material than doors are, so the step is steeper. Even so, at $28.65 of cabinet per inch of width, GN DB27 at $773.50 is one of the better-value drawer banks on the board.

Third, and least obvious: GN SB27 and GN B27FD are both $442.00. A sink base and a full-height door box cost precisely the same here, which means nobody should ever be choosing between them on money.

Where the odd width should land

Put the odd number where there is nothing next to it to measure against: the last box before a wall returns, the one tucked against a pantry, the one below a window that has everybody looking upwards anyway. Slot it into the middle of a rhythm of matching doors and the whole wall goes subtly wrong — visitors register it in a second and could not tell you what they registered. Draw the run before you order it and the answer is obvious in thirty seconds.

The other good home for a 27 is directly beside the range, as a drawer bank. Full-size pans lie flat in it, sheet pans fit without turning, and the drawers come to you at the exact moment your hands are full — which is the one place in a kitchen where three extra inches is felt rather than measured.

Common questions

Is 27 inches a real cabinet width?
It is, though a thinly stocked one: five boxes. GN B27FD-12D $429.00, GN B27FD and GN SB27 at $442.00 apiece, GN B27 $516.75, GN DB27 $773.50.
What does going from a 24 to a 27-inch cabinet cost?
Between $32.50 and $45.50 on the door, shallow and sink families, and $68.25 on the three-drawer bank. Three inches of filler costs $26.00, so the wider cabinet is often the same money.
Will a kitchen sink fit in GN SB27?
A single bowl, yes — this is the first box in the family we would trust with the household sink rather than a prep one. A 33-inch double, no. Take the minimum width off the sink’s own specification and give yourself a little margin on top of it.
Which families skip this width?
Every corner box, the farmhouse sink cabinets, the appliance bays for an oven or a microwave, and both the pan-only and four-way drawer banks. Look for those at 30 and 33 inches instead.
Should I use a filler or move up a cabinet size?
Move up, whenever the wall allows it. Most families charge $13.00 to $45.50 for the step, against $26.00 for a strip of wood that holds nothing — and a strip stranded mid-run leaves you counter with a void underneath. Keep filler at the walls and the corners where it belongs.
